Objectives: The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of chewing difficulty on depression in Korean adults to provide basic data on improving the quality of life related to oral health of Korean adults. Methods: The raw data of the analysis were obtained from the dataset of the seven Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey conducted between 2016 and 2018. The subjects included 9,535 people who underwent oral examination and answered questions. The collected data were analyzed using the SPSS (ver 21.0) program using composite samples, and the mean crossover analysis and logistic return analysis were performed. Results: An analysis of the effects of chewing difficulty on depression in Korean adults showed that those with chewing difficulty had a 2.24 fold higher risk of depression (95% CI: 1.73-2.90) and a statistically significant difference (p<0.05). Conclusions: The association between the chewing difficulty on depression could be confirmed, and measures improve of the oral health and preventing depression should be prepared.
Objectives: The purpose of the study was to investigate the influencing factors of the perceived oral health for improvement of quality of life in Korean elderly. Methods: The subjects were 1,289 elderly over 65 years old from the sixth National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2013. The dependent variable was subjective oral health status. The independent variable was sociodemographic characteristics. Results: The perceived oral health of the unemployed elderly and those having chewing problems were 1.65-fold(95% CI=1.12=2.44) and 3.45-fold(95% CI=2.37-5.02), respectively than employed and chewable elderly. The perceived oral health of the former was 2.49-fold worse(95% CI=1.73-3.60) than the latter. Conclusions: The influencing factors of perceived oral health status included occupation, perceived health status and chewing problems. To improve the oral health-related quality of life in the elderly, continuous education and hands-on programs should be provided for the elderly in the long term care.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to survey periodontal status using oral health index in the elderly population and determine methods for improving oral health status. Methods: The date collected from 'The fifth korean national health and nutrition examination survey 2010' was analyzed in this study. Statistical analysis was done using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences version 19.0 for windows. We determined frequencies and percentage, calculating means, and standard deviations, and determining statistical significance using logistic regression analysis, multiple regression analysis. Results: General characteristics showed differences in oral health behaviors associated with gender, age, residence, education. General characteristics showed differences in periodontal status associated with gender, family type, gender, residence, education. Oral health behaviors showed differences in periodontal status associated with using oral health care products, dental treatment. Conclusion: In conclusion, in order to improve oral health of the elderly, the importance and needs of periodontal status should be emphasized. periodontal status related education for the elderly should be operated.
Stroke is the second cause of death worldwide, although the survival period is increasing after the occurrence of stroke, severe physical disability is caused with aftereffect. Oral inflammation is not limited to the oral cavity, it can cause malignant changes in other tissues and organs. In previous studies, we confirmed the relationship between tooth loss and stroke due to periodontal inflammation. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between oral health and stroke such as oral hygiene behavior, tooth loss and periodontal disease among Korean adults over 40 years of age. This study was analyzed using the 6th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) data. A total of 3,389 adults over 40 years of age were analyzed as final subjects. Socioeconomic statuses and oral health status was analyzed using a complex sample analysis technique. Logistic regression was used to analyze the relationship of oral health and stroke, and 95% confidence intervals were computed using SPSS. When the prevalence of stroke according to oral hygiene behavior was checked, the prevalence of strokes was lower in subjects who had a lot of brushings per day and subjects who used oral hygiene products (p<0.05). The risk of stroke was 2.17 times (95% confidence interval, 1.43~3.28) higher in the group with less than 19 remaining teeth, but it was not statistically significant as a result of adjusting for age and sex, income level, education level, drinking and smoking (p>0.05). Loss of teeth was found to be associated with the risk factor of stroke. Therefore, loss of teeth due to periodontal disease is an additional issue that should be considered as a risk factor for stroke.
Objectives: Dental caries and periodontitis are major oral bacterial infections associated with dental plaque. Infection and inflammation play a role in carcinogenesis, and a significant link has been found between some highly prevalent oral and dental diseases and some types of cancer. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between cancer and oral health among Korean adults. Methods: Data from the 6th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were used to analyze the incidence of cancer according to oral health. Demographic and socioeconomic statuses and oral behavior of the participants was analyzed using complex chi-square tests. Logistic regression was used to analyze the relationship between a high DMFT index and cancer by calculating the 95% confidence intervals. Results: In total, 6,450 case-control subjects were included. Significant difference was observed in the DMFT index, but not in periodontal diseases, between the cases and controls. The odds ratio for cancer was 1.80 (95% confidence interval: 1.18 to 2.73) in the high-risk group. However, no significant difference was observed after adjusting for age, education level, and income. Conclusions: The results provide potential evidence of a significant association between cancer and oral disease.
Objectives: For postmenopausal women who participated in the 2019 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, we aimed to provide basic data for oral health management interventions and oral policies for each life cycle of postmenopausal women by identifying the relationship between physical activity and depression on oral health behavior and awareness symptoms. Methods: The participants of this study were 1,628 menopausal women, and their general characteristics, physical activity, depression, and oral health behavior and awareness symptoms were investigated. This study used the complex sample frequency analysis, complex sample 𝞆2 test, and logistic regression analysis method, which is a sample design of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Results: The factors influencing physical activity were the use of oral hygiene device and chewing difficulty. and the influencing factors of depression experience were pain and chewing difficulty. Conclusions: As a result, physical activity and depression experience should be utilized by developing and oral health program for the promotion of oral health in postmenopausal women.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to determine the differences in quality of life between groups that promote oral health and those that treat oral diseases using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Methods: Data analysis was performed using IBM SPSS ver. 21.0 (IBM Co., Armonk, NY, USA). A total of 3,338 subjects were selected as subjects for the study before applying oral health promotion (OHP; 1,132 persons) and oral disease treatment (ODT; 2,206 persons). Complex sample logistic regression analysis was performed to determine the effects of OHP and ODT on health-related quality of life. Results: As a result of confirming the effect of OHP and ODT on the quality of life, which are indicators of the quality of life, HINT-8 had a significant effect even in Model 2, adjusted for demographic characteristics, with a significant difference (p<0.01). Conclusions: The above results confirmed that persons who promote oral health have a significant effect on HINT-8, a quality of life scale developed for Koreans. Therefore, continuous oral care is required to improve quality of life.
Objectives: The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of health behavior on oral health of Korean adolescents. Methods: The study subjects were 1,071 adolescents of 13-18 years old from Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) 2010-2012. Male students were 54.5% and female students were 45.5%. The study consisted of two groups: 13-15 years old and 16-18 years old groups. Data were analyzed by SAS 9.13 version. Results: Those who ingested alcohol had gingival bleeding in 41.0% and 31.0% in those who did not. Those who did not have regular oral examinations had 38.5% of gingival bleeding while those with regular oral examination had 29.7% of gingival bleeding (p<0.01). Students between 16 to 18 years old without oral care products tended to have more gingival bleeding than those who use auxiliary oral hygiene devices (OR=2.658, 95% CI=1.327-5.324). Conclusions: The oral health management of adolescents is closely related to health behavior. Cessation of alcohol ingestion and smoking is very important to improve the adolescent oral health.
