  • Since the oil price has been significantly jumped for recent some years, the diesel engine of the merchant ship has been mainly used the heavy oil of low quality. Thus, it has been often exposed to severely corrosive environment more and more because temperature of the exhaust gas in a combustion chamber is getting higher and higher with increasing of using the heavy oil of low quality. As a result, wear and corrosion of most parts surrounded with combustion chamber is more serious compared to the other parts of the engine. Therefore, an optimum weldment for these parts is very important to prolong their lifetime in a economical point of view. In this study, four types of filler metals such as Inconel 625, 718, 1.25Cr-0.5Mo and 0.5Mo were welded with SMAW and GTAW methods in the forged steel which would be generally used with piston crown material. And the corrosion properties of weld metal, heat affected zone and base metal were investigated using electrochemical methods such as measurement of corrosion potential, anodic polarization curves, cyclic voltammogram and impedance etc. in 35% H2SO4 solution. The weld metal and base metal exhibited the best and worst corrosion resistance in all cases of filler metals. In particular, the weld metal welded with filler metals of Inconel 718 revealed the best corrosion resistance among the filler metals, and Inconel 625 followed the Inconel 718. Hardness relatively indicated higher value in the weld metal compared to the base metal. Furthermore, Inconel 625 and 718 indicated higher values of hardness compared to 1.25cr-0.5Mo and 0,5Mo filler metals in the weld metal.

  • This study was undertaken to develop the optimum baking formular and process in making the improved soy-wheat composite breads furtified with soy flour, which has been known for a source of biologically active phytochemicals and for more vegetable proteins as well. The effects of the addition of soy flour on a rheological properties of dough, on the sensory characteristics of breads, and on the possibilities of commercialization of these functional breads were investigated. As the added amount of soy flour increased, water absorption, development time and the weakness value of dough were increased, but dough stability were decreased in the farinograph. In the extensograph, the more soy flour was added, the less the extensibility and the resistance to extention were shown. As the amount of soy flour increased, gelatinazation point was increased in the amylograph, but the maxium viscosity was decreased. As the added amount of soy flour was increased, b value(yellowness) was obviously increased, L value(lightness) was slightly decreased. However, a value(redness) was not nearly changed in the color of cut loaves. In sensory evaluation, the more soy flour was added, the less the external, the internal characteristics and the eating qualities were shown. Accorting to the addition of soy flour, the toughness and the brittleness tended to be increased proportionally. The dough of 10% soy-wheat composite flour(SF10) was the most favorable on the baking performance.

  • Rare-earth niobates, ag (Ln = Y, La, Gd) are well-known self-activated phosphors due to charge transfer in $NbO^{3-}_4$ showing a broad and strong emission band in the spectral region around 410 nm. In order to find new blue and red phosphors for FED, $LaNbO_4$ : X (X = Bi, Eu) phosphors are prepared through solid-state reactions at high temperature. The optimum reaction condition for these phosphors to give maximum emission intensity is obtained when it is first fired at $1250^{\circ}C$ for 2 h followed by second firing at $1400^{\circ}C$ for 1 h. Under irradiation at 254 nm, $1mol\%\;Bi^{3+}$ doped $LaNbO_4$ phosphor shows strong blue emission band with a range of $420\~450nm$. Also $10mol\%\;Eu^{3+}$ doped $LaNbO_4$ phosphor shows the maximum emission intensity at about 610 nm. Emission peaks at $415\~460nm$, $530\~560nm$and $570\~620nm$are observed in phosphors below $10mol\%\;Eu^{3+}$ doped $LaNbO_4$. Similar results are obtained in cathodoluminescent property of these phosphors.

  • Oral implants must fulfill certain criteria arising from special demands of function, which include biocompatibility, adequate mechanical strength, optimum soft and hard tissue integration, and transmission of functional forces to bone within physiological limits. And one of the critical elements influencing the long-term uncompromise functioning of oral implants is load distribution at the implant- bone interface, Factors that affect the load transfer at the bone-implant interface include the type of loading, material properties of the implant and prosthesis, implant geometry, surface structure, quality and quantity of the surrounding bone, and nature of the bone-implant interface. To understand the biomechanical behavior of dental implants, validation of stress and strain measurements is required. The finite element analysis (FEA) has been applied to the dental implant field to predict stress distribution patterns in the implant-bone interface by comparison of various implant designs. This method offers the advantage of solving complex structural problems by dividing them into smaller and simpler interrelated sections by using mathematical techniques. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the stresses induced around the implants in bone using FEA, A 3D FEA computer software (SOLIDWORKS 2004, DASSO SYSTEM, France) was used for the analysis of clinical simulations. Two types (external and internal) of implants of 4.1 mm diameter, 12.0 mm length were buried in 4 types of bone modeled. Vertical and oblique forces of lOON were applied on the center of the abutment, and the values of von Mises equivalent stress at the implant-bone interface were computed. The results showed that von Mises stresses at the marginal. bone were higher under oblique load than under vertical load, and the stresses were higher at the lingual marginal bone than at the buccal marginal bone under oblique load. Under vertical and oblique load, the stress in type I, II, III bone was found to be the highest at the marginal bone and the lowest at the bone around apical portions of implant. Higher stresses occurred at the top of the crestal region and lower stresses occurred near the tip of the implant with greater thickness of the cortical shell while high stresses surrounded the fixture apex for type N. The stresses in the crestal region were higher in Model 2 than in Model 1, the stresses near the tip of the implant were higher in Model 1 than Model 2, and Model 2 showed more effective stress distribution than Model.

  • This study evaluated tidal stream energy resources according to tidal flow properties around Uido off the west coast of, Jeollanam-do, South Korea. A feasibility study was first carried out through the collection of bathymetry data and tidal phase information. For this simulation, a depth-averaged 2D ADCIRC (Advanced Circulation) model for real sea situations was applied to a Finite Element Method (FEM) approach for tides given the variation of tidal current speed. Hydrodynamics were simulated with 4 major tidal constituents (M2, S2, K1, and O1) after setting up 4 observation points. From the real depth-averaged model simulation results, it was found that the spring tide Higher High Water (HHW) and tidal current speed values at the 4 observation points were about 2.2 m and 1.33 m/s, respectively. The ADCIRC model results were analyzed with reference to the Korea Hydrographic and Oceanographic Agency's (KHOA) observed data for verification. Furthermore, using topographical characteristics via the Tidal Flux Method (TFM), tidal energy density distribution was calculated, indicating a maximum tidal energy density of about $1.75kW/m^2$ for the 5 assessment areas around Uido. The tidal energy density was evaluated with consideration given to topographical characteristics as well as tidal elevation and tidal current speed to determine an optimum tidal farm candidate.

  • Sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) nanofibers were prepared by electrospinning. The nanofibrous membrane for polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) was fabricated by compression molding. The maximum degree of sulfonation was 95% and the initial thermal degradation temperature was $280^{\circ}C$ and it's value was lower than that of PEEK. The contact angle of SPEEK increased with decreasing the degree of sulfonation. The optimum voltage, flow rate, tip to collector distance (TCD) and concentration of electrospinning conditions were 22 kV, 0.3 mL/hr, 15 cm, and 23 wt%, respectively. The average nanofibrous diameter was 47.6 nm. The water uptake and ion exchange capacity of SPEEK nanofibrous membrane increased with increasing the sulfonation time and the amount of sulfonating agent. The electrical resistance and proton ionic conductivity of SPEEK membrane increased with decreasing and increasing the sulfonation time, respectively. Their values were 0.58~0.06 ${\Omega}{\cdot}cm^2$and 0.099 S/cm.

  • A series of transparent polyimide (PI) nanocomposite films was synthesized from bicyclo(2,2,2)oct-7-ene-2,3,5,6-tetracarboxylic dianhydride (BTDA) and 1,3-bis(3-aminophenoxy)benzene (BAPB) with various organoclay contents via solution intercalation polymerization to poly(amic acid)s, followed by thermal imidization. Varying organoclay loading in a range of 0 to 1.5 wt% produced variations in the optical transparency, morphology, and oxygen barrier property of the hybrids. An optimum oxygen barrier property was observed for the hybrids containing 1.0 wt% Cloisite 30B; these properties were degraded gradually by further increases in the clay content. The PI hybrid films were found to exhibit excellent optical transparency and almost no color. However, the transparency of the hybrid films decreased slightly with increasing organoclay content. Transparent PI hybrid films containing 1.0 wt% Cloisite 30B were stretched equi-biaxially with various stretching ratios in a range of 100-140% to investigate their optical transparency and oxygen permeability in detail; the variations of clay dispersion and morphology were also determined as a function of equi-biaxial stretching ratio. PI hybrid films with ${\geq}120%$ stretching were found to contain homogeneously dispersed clay in the polymer matrix and exfoliated nanocomposites. The highest barrier to oxygen permeation was found at an equi-biaxial stretching ratio of 130%.

  • The structure, morphology, and physical properties of syndiotatic poly(vinyl alcohol) (s-PVA) gel spun fibers were investigated to prepare polymeric embolization coils. S-PVA was prepared by saponification of the poly(vinyl acetate)/poly(vinyl pivalate)(PVAc/PVPi) copolymer. The viscosity of s-PVA solutions showed shear thinning behavior and the solution formed a homogeneous phase. Based on shear viscosity change with concentration, the optimum dope concentration was selected as 13 wt%, after which s-PVA fibers were spun and the solvent was removed. The fibers were then drawn with a maximum draw ratio of 15. A polymeric embolization coil was made of the s-PVA gel-spun fibers. The fibers were wound densely onto rigid rod and then annealed at different annealing temperatures. The polymeric embolization coil annealed at $200^{\circ}C$ was similar to metallic coils and its shape was maintained well after extension. Overall, gel-spun PVA fibers performed well for the preparation of primary and secondary coils to replace metallic coils.

  • The nonreciprocal phase shift characteristics of infinite slab optical waveguides with magneto-optic materials in the cladding layer was calculated at 1.55 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ for optical isolators. The infinite slab waveguide structures considered in this paper were as follows. rho magneto-optic materials used as a cladding layer were Ce:YIG and LNB(LuNdBi)$_3$(FeAl)$_{5}$)$_{12}$,). Their specific Faraday rotations Θ$_{F}$ are 4500$^{\circ}$/cm, 500$^{\circ}$/cm at wavelength 1.55 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ respectively. The guiding layer with multi-quantum well structure was used, and it consists of 1.3Q and InGaAs. In order to investigate the effect of evanescent field penetrating the cadding, layer, guiding mode characteristics were calculated for the cases when the substrate is InP and air. We calculated the minimum lengths of 90$^{\circ}$ nonreciprocal phase shifters and their optimum guiding layer thicknesses in various optical waveguide structures.res.s.

  • The effects of the particle size and the structure of carbon blacks on the friction and the wear behavior of filled natural rubber were investigated in this study. The particle size and the structure of carbon black had a significant effect on the wear rates and the worn surface pattern, and the effect of them on abrasion resistance should be considered for the optimum design of desired wear properties. Ten carbon blacks with various sizes and structures are mixed with natural rubber in order to investigate the effects on the wear rate ($W_R$). The friction and the wear behavior were examined by self-made blade type friction-wear abrader, and the ,elation with characteristic parameter (${\psi}=\sqrt{{N_2^2}+{DBP^2}}$), obtained from the particle size and the structure, was studied. The wear rate ($W_R$) had a Power Law relation with the frictional work ($W_f$) and it was inversely proportional to the characteristic parameter of carbon black. It means that smaller particle size and better structure development of carbon black resulted in improved abrasion resistance.
