  • In this paper, a monopole antenna of conical-cylindrical compound shape is presented. The conventional circular conical monopole antenna is modified by placing a cylinder at the top of the inverted cone. The cylindrical portion is useful in the wide band impedance matching, in adjusting the antenna gain in the horizontal direction, and in reducing the cone diameter. The dependence of the antenna performance on various geometric parameters is investigated using a commercial electromagnetic simulation software, from which an optimum design of the antenna is derived. The diameter of the circular ground plane is minimized to 115 wavelength at the lowest operating frequency. The antenna proposed in this study shows a reflection coefficient less than -10 dB and a 1${\sim}$6 dBi gain over 3${\sim}$20 GHz frequencies. The antenna shows a circular-symmetric radiation pattern in the horizontal plane and a null-free pattern in the vertical direction over the whole operating frequency range.

  • In this dissertation, in order to analyze the ground plane size which will affect the antenna characteristic, the appropriate antenna was designed and produced in compliance with the needs that the existing antenna should be improved, and then the optimum ground plane size was calculated. It was proved it affected the radiation characteristic greatly but didn't affect the impedance characteristic nearly when ground plane size of the existing folded slot antenna was enlarged with using the copper e cut in some size. Though it require the complicate procedure by the strict design in order to calculate exactly, if it is made of the antenna of the appropriate size that the effect of ground plane can be taken no account, it can be made easily.

  • In this study, microscale, high-performance, solenoid-type RF chip inductors were investigated. The size of the RF chip inductors fabricated in this work was 1.0${\times}$0.5${\times}$0.5㎣. 96% $Al_2$ $O_3$and I-type were used as the material and shape of the core, respectively. The copper (Cu) wire with 6 turns was employed as the coils. The diameter (40${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$) and position (middle) of the coil and the length (0.35mm) of solenoid were determined by a high-frequency structure simulator (HFSS) to maximize the performance of the inductors. High frequency characteristics of the inductance (L) and quality-factor (Q) of developed inductors were measured using an RF Impedance/Material Analyzer (HP4291B with HP16193A test fixture). The inductors developed have inductances of 10.8nH and quality factors of 25.2 to 50 over the frequency ranges of 250MHz to l GHz, and show results comparable to those measured for the inductors prepared by CoilCraf $t^{Tm}$ . The simulated data predicted the high-frequency data of the L and Q of the inductors developed well.l.

  • In this paper, the optimum design of ultrasonic dry cleaning head was investigated. The transducer instead of mechanical dynamic structure was used to generate ultrasonic wave and the horn-shape amplifier was utilized to solve the energy decaying problem of ultrasonic wave with propagating it through the media. The analyses of ultrasonic wave and a fluid for the selected structure of a cleaning head were carried out using SYSNOISE and ANSYS simulators, respectively. Based on simulator results, the distance between a horn and the substrate of 4 mm and the horn diameter of 10 mm were determined to maximize the energy of ultrasonic waves. The cooling structure was also considered to reduce the heat from the transducer and the horn. The equivalent circuit for the fabricated horn was deduced from HP4194A impedance/gain/phase analyzer and the frequency of an ultrasonic wave of 20.25 kHz was confirmed using the parameters of the equivalent circuit.

  • The effects of $SiO_2$ and MnO addition on the sinterability and the electrical properties of 0.4mol% Nb-doped SrTiO3 varistor were investigated. The $SiO_2$ content was fixed at 0.3mol% and the MnO content varied from 0 to 1.0mol%. With 0.3 mol% $SiO_2$ and 0.3 mol% MnO addition, optimum density was obtained by sintering at $1200^{\circ}C$ without excess liquid phase. Impedance spectroscopy was performed on the sintered specimens with 0.3 mol% $SiO_2$ and various MnO contents. It was found that the resistivities of grains was increased with increasing MnO content. The dielectric constant was measured to be above 50000 in the specimen with 0.3~1.0mol% Mn content. The non-linear coefficient increased substantially with MnO addition, and it varied from 1 to 9 depending on the MnO content.

  • The phase-shift method and correlation constants, which are unique electrochemical impedance spectroscopy techniques for studying the linear relationship between the phase shift ($90^{\circ}{\geq}-{\varphi}{\geq}0^{\circ}$) vs. potential (E) behavior for the optimum intermediate frequency ($f_o$) and the fractional surface coverage ($0{\leq}{\theta}{\leq}1$) vs. E behavior, are proposed and verified to determine the Frumkin, Langmuir, and Temkin adsorption isotherms and the related electrode kinetic and thermodynamic parameters. At Ni/0.5 M $H_2SO_4$ and 0.1M LiOH aqueous solution interfaces, the Frumkin and Temkin adsorption isotherms (${\theta}$ vs. E) of H for the cathodic hydrogen ($H_2$) evolution, interaction parameters (g), equilibrium constants (K), standard Gibbs energies (${\Delta}G^0_{\theta}$) of H adsorption, and rates of change (r) of ${\Delta}G^0_{\theta}$ with ${\theta}$ have been determined using the phase-shift method and correlation constants. A lateral repulsive interaction (g>0) between the adsorbed H species appears. The value of K in the alkaline aqueous solution is much greater than that in the acidic aqueous solution.

  • The dielectric effects of plastic packages on GaAs($\varepsilon$$_{r}$=13) MMIC microstrip characteristics are analyzed using the spectral domain method (SDM). As being packaged by typical FR-4 composites ($\varepsilon$$_{r}$=14.2) for PCB substrates and plastic packages, the characteristic impedance is reduced by about 6 %, but the effective dielectric constant is increased by 13 % from those of bare microstrip, respectively. The parasitic effects of the packaging materials can greatly degrade the performance of the packaged MMIC. We also calculated the optimum microstrip width, which maintains the 50 $\Omega$ matching condition after plastic packaging. These calculated results can be used to optimize the plastic packages, and extend the application ranges for low cost MMIC production.n.

  • A novel microstrip circular slot antenna fed by a spiral line is presented in this paper. This antenna is a planar equivalent structure of an eccentric spiral antenna generates a circularly-polarized wave. We have investigated the input impedance and radiation characteristics of this antenna by using an EM (electromagnetic) simulator, and obtained a design method [or optimum structure. The main characteristic of the antenna is that the main beam direction is off-normal to the antenna plane and moves linearly into ${\theta }$ and ${\phi }$ direction as the frequency increases. This feature allows one to predict the main beam direction easily for a given operating frequency. This antenna has axial ratio lower than 3 dB in the direction of main beam over one octave bandwidth.

  • A fully integrated high-efficiency linear CMOS power amplifier (PA) is developed for 802.11n WLAN applications using the 65-nm standard CMOS technology. The transformer topology is investigated to obtain a high-efficiency and high-linearity performance. By adopting a 2:2 output transformer, an optimum impedance is provided to the PA core. Besides, a LC harmonic control block is added to reduce the AM-to-AM/AM-to-PM distortions. The CMOS PA produces a saturated power of 26.1 dBm with a peak power-added efficiency (PAE) of 38.2%. The PA is tested using an 802.11n signal, and it satisfies the stringent error vector magnitude (EVM) and mask requirements. It achieves -28-dB EVM at an output power of 18.6 dBm with a PAE of 14.7%.

  • A new approach to designing a broadband and highly efficient class-E power amplifier based on nonlinear shunt capacitance analysis is proposed. The nonlinear shunt capacitance method accurately extracts optimum class-E power amplifier parameters, including an external shunt capacitance and an output impedance, at different frequencies. The dependence of the former parameter on the frequency is considered to select an optimal value of external shunt capacitor. Then, upon determining the latter parameter, an output matching network is optimized to obtain the highest efficiency across the bandwidth of interest. An analytical approach is presented to design the broadband class-E power amplifier of a MOSFET transistor. The proposed method is experimentally verified by a 140-170 MHz class-E power amplifier design with maximum added power efficiency of 82% and output power of 34 dBm.
