Numerical simulation on rock cutting by a TBM disc cutter was carried out using SPH (Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics) code. AUTODYN3D, a commercial software program based on finite element method, was used in this study. The three-dimensional geometry of a disc cutter and a rock specimen were modeled by Lagrange and SPH code respectively. The numerical simulation was carried out for Hwangdeung granite for 10 different cutting conditions. The results of the numerical simulation, i.e. the relation between cutter force and failure behavior, had a good agreement with those from LCM test. The cutter forces measured in the numerical simulation had 10% deviation from the LCM test results. Moreover, the optimum cutter spacing was almost identical with the experimental results. These results indicate that SPH code can be successfully used had applicability for simulation on rock cutting by a TBM disc cutter. However, further study on Lagrange-SPH coupled modelling would be necessary to reduce the computation time.
Hot melt adhesive based on the polyamide resin was studied to improve the conventional hot melt adhesives such as ethylene-vinyl acetate which have inherent problems against creep and heat resistance. It was found that the terpolymer of nylons6, nylon66, and nylon12 or the nylon blend instead of nylon homopolymer was suitable base resin for hot melt adhesives, since the disruption of regularity in the polymer chains reduced the crystallinity, resulting in lower melting point and melt viscosity. Also, the rheological properties of the polyamide based hot melt adhesive could be controlled by the incorporation of terpene resin, butyl benzyl phthalate, and paraffin wax. The results of melt viscosities and tensile properties of adhesive itself indicated that the optimum adhesion properties could be obtained through the blending of CM831/843P resins with weight ratio 75/25~50/50. The adhesion between steel and steel was tested by using lap shear geometry. It was found that the surface roughness of steel affected the adhesion strength.

A new eccentric forging process for camber bolts has been suggested in this study. The camber bolt is manufactured by a two-step process: the typical forging process for normal bolts and the trimming process for the eccentric flange. The processes are performed under high forging load and generate a large amount of chip during trimming. A new forging process has been required in order to overcome these problems. The eccentric forging is the new process in which the load axis is offset from the central axis, as against central load applied in a typical forging process. The eccentric forging process could reduce forging load and save the amount of chip. In order to manufacture camber bolts by an optimum process, it is required to adjust the geometry of eccentric die and the offset from the central axis.
Despite its flexibility to complex geometry, three-dimensional (3D) electromagnetic(EM) modeling schemes using finite element method (FEM) have been faced to practical limitation due to the resulting large system of equations to be solved. An efficient 3D FEM modeling scheme has been developed, which can adopt either direct or iterative solver depending on the problems. The direct solver PARDISO can reduce the computing time remarkably by incorporating parallel computing on multi-core processor systems, which is appropriate for single frequency multi-source configurations. When limited memory, the iterative solver BiCGSTAB(1) can provide fast and stable convergence. Efficient 3D simulations can be performed by choosing an optimum solver depending on the computing environment and the problems to be solved. This modeling includes various types of controlled-sources and can be exploited as an efficient engine for 3D inversion.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the cooling performance of radial heat sink used for high power LED lightings by natural convection cooling with surrounding air. Experimental and numerical analyses are carried out together. Parametric studies are performed to compare the effects of geometric parameters in radial heat sink such as the number of fins, fin height, fin length, and thickness of fin base as well as the surface coatings of radial heat sink. In this study, the cooling of 60 W LED lamp is examined with radiative heat transfer considered as well as natural convection. Numerical results show the optimum condition when the number of fin is 40, heat sink height is 120 mm, fin length is 15 mm, and fin base thickness is 3 mm. The difference in temperature of the LED metal PCB is within $1^{\circ}C$ between numerical analyses and experimental results. Also, the CNT coating on the heat sink surface is found to increase the cooling performance significantly.
Filament Winding Process is a comparatively simple operation in which continuous reinforcements in the form of roving are wound over a rotating mandrel. It is well established and versatile method for storage tanks and pipes for the chemical and other industries. In this study, tensile strength of a filament wound ring specimens were evaluated by a split disk test fixture and a dress disk test fixture. The results obtained from experiments were compared with the theoretical values from the rule of mixtures. The purpose of this paper is the suggestion of an appropriate test method for the evaluation of tensile properties of filament wound structures. The tensile strength of a ring specimen tested by the dress disk test showed better agreement with the theoretical values than those tested by the split disk test because of higher stress concentration in edges of a split disk test fixture. The results showed that the tensile strength of a ring specimen was influenced by the geometry of test fixture, the continuity of fibers, fiber-tension, fiber-end and stress concentration in specimen.

A numerical investigation was performed based on the Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes(RANS) equations for the two-dimensional unsteady flow around a vertical axis turbine(VAT) with three or four blades. VAT is one of the promising devices for tidal current energy conversion. The geometry of the turbine blade was $NACA65_3$-018 airfoil, for which CFD analysis using Fluent was carried out at several angles of attack and the results were compared with the corresponding experimental data for validation and calibration. Then CFD simulations were carried out for the whole vertical axis turbine with a two-dimensional setup. The CFD simulation demonstrated the usefulness of the method to study the typical unsteady flows around VATs and the results showed that the optimum turbine efficiency could be achieved for carefully selected combinations of the number of blade and Tip-Speed Ratio(TSR).

In this paper design criteria for semi-submersibles, effective at the stage of basic design, are reviewed first generally. Thereafter an extensive study is focussed on essential problematic areas such as design load, heaving motion, overall structural analysis and welding technique. The necessity for this kind of research is apparent in the light of the fact that ocean exploration and exploitation becomes extended to deeper ocean and that semi-submersibles are the most favorite unit for operation under this environment. In some sense principles in naval architecture are indeed applicable to the design of semi-submersible. However, because of the difference in geometry between ships and semi-submersibles, there are significant deviations in design method. A thorough discussion is made on particular behaviours of a semi-submersible in stability, wave load, motion characteristics and structural responses. Then some calculation-procedures and design guidelines are tentatively proposed. A numerical calculation for a semi-submersible Sedco 708 is exemplified for better understanding of the concept. The structure has 4 main and another 4 secondary stabilizing columns with catamaran-type lower hull. In this example design condition is supposed to be 28m wave height, 90 knots wind speed for survival condition and seastate 6 for operational condition in water of 100m depth. The numerical result implies that the actual design of this model can be assessed close to optimum. Further intensive research is strongly required in the subject fields of dynamic stability, rational evaluation of wave load statistical basis for fatigue life judgement.
This paper describes the far-field estimation using the near-field measurement data. Measurement in far-field region gives us the acoustical characteristics of the source but in general measurement is made in near-field such as acoustic water tank or anechoic chamber, so far-field acoustical characteristics of the source should be predicted from near-field data. In this case, the number of measurement points in the near field which relates to the accuracy of the predicted field and the amount of data processing, should be optimized. Existing papers say that measurement points is proportional to kL and depends on geometry and directivity of the source. But they do not give us any definite criterion for the required number of measurement points. Boundary Collocation Method which is one of the far-field prediction methods, is analyzed based on Helmholtz integral equation and Green function and it has been found that the number of measurement points is optimized as 0.54kL which is about one half of the existing results.

In this paper, geometrical optimization for newly designed flapping mechanism for insect-like micro air vehicle is presented. The mechanism uses strings to convert rotation of motor to reciprocating wing motion to reduce the total weight and inertial force. The governing algorithm of movement of the mechanism is established considering the characteristic of string that only tensile force can be acted by string, to optimize the kinematics. Modified pattern search method which is complemented to avoid converging into local optimum is adopted to the geometrical optimization of the mechanism. Then, prototype of the optimized geometry is produced and experimented to check the feasibility of the mechanism and the optimization method. The results from optimization and experiment shows good agreement in flapping amplitude and other wing kinematics. Further research will be conducted on dynamic analysis of the mechanism and detailed specification of the prototype.
