Optimal cross-section and configuration design of cyclic loaded elastic-plastic structures

  • This paper describes a continuum variational formulation for design optimization of nonlinear structures in the elastic-plastic domain, where unloading and reloading of the structures are allowed to occur. The Total Lagrangian procedure is used for the description of the structural deformation. The direct differentiation approach is used to derive the sensitivities of the various structural response measures with respect to the design parameters. Since the material goes into the inelastic range and unloading and reloading of the structure are allowed to occur, the structural response is path dependent and an additional step is needed to integrate the constitutive equations. It can be shown, consequently, that design sensitivity analysis is also path-dependent. The theory has been discretized by the finite element technique and implemented in a structural analysis code. Mathematical programming approach is used for the optimization process. Numerical applications on trusses are performed, where cross-sectional areas and nodal point coordinates are treated as design variables. Optimal designs have been obtained and compared by using two different strategies: a two level strategy where the levels are defined accordingly the type of design variables, cross sectional areas or node coordinates, and optimizing simultaneously with respect to both types of design variables.

Multi-objective optimal design of laminate composite shells and stiffened shells

  • This paper presents a multi-objective evolutionary algorithm for combinatorial optimisation and applied for design optimisation of fiber reinforced composite structures. The proposed algorithm closely follows the implementation of Pareto Archive Evolutionary strategy (PAES) proposed in the literature. The modifications suggested include a customized neighbourhood search algorithm in place of mutation operator to improve intensification mechanism and a cross over operator to improve diversification mechanism. Further, an external archive is maintained to collect the historical Pareto optimal solutions. The design constraints are handled in this paper by treating them as additional objectives. Numerical studies have been carried out by solving a hybrid fiber reinforced laminate composite cylindrical shell, stiffened composite cylindrical shell and pressure vessel with varied number of design objectives. The studies presented in this paper clearly indicate that well spread Pareto optimal solutions can be obtained employing the proposed algorithm.

위상최적화와 Cellular Automata 모델을 이용한 대공간 트러스 구조물의 최적형태 설계 (Optimal Shape Design of Space Truss Structure using Topology Optimization and Cellular Automata Model)

  • 대공간 구조물은 형태에 따라 구조물의 설계와 시공에 미치는 영향이 크기 때문에 초기 단계에서의 최적형태 설계가 중요하다. 그러나 기존의 대공간 구조물의 최적형태 설계는 구조엔지니어의 직관이나 경험을 바탕으로 수행되어 왔다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 대공간 트러스 구조물의 체계적인 최적형태 설계를 위해 위상최적화 기법과 Cellular Automata 모델을 이용한 통합프로세서를 제안하고자 한다. 먼저 위상최적화 기법을 이용하여 구조물의 초기 최적형상을 찾고, 다음 단계로 Cellular Automata 규칙에 의해 생성된 구조패턴을 적용하여 대공간 트러스 구조형태를 생성한다. 최종적으로 구조해석을 실시하고 크기최적화를 적용함으로써 설계조건을 만족하는 최적형태를 제안하고자 한다.

충격 특성을 고려한 Tonpilz 변환기의 최적구조 설계 (Optimal Structural Design of a Tonpilz Transducer Considering the Characteristic of the Impulsive Shock Pressure)

  • The optimal structure of the Tonpilz transducer was designed. First, the FE model of the transducer was constructed, that included all the details of the transducer which used practical environment. The validity of the FE model was verified through the impedance analysis of the transducer. Second, the resonance frequency, the sound pressure, the bandwidth, and the impulsive shock pressure of the transducer in relation to its structural variables were analyzed. Third, the design method of $2^n$ experiments was employed to reduce the number of analysis cases, and through statistical multiple regression analysis of the results, the functional forms of the transducer performances that could consider the cross-coupled effects of the structural variables were derived. Based on the all results, the optimal geometry of the Tonpilz transducer that had the highest sound pressure level at the desired working environment was determined through the optimization with the SQP-PD method of a target function composed of the transducer performance. Furthermore, for the convenience of a user, the automatic process program making the optimal structure of the acoustic transducer automatically at a given target and a desired working environment was made. The developed method can reflect all the cross-coupled effects of multiple structural variables, and can be extended to the design of general acoustic transducers.

A Study on the Uncertainty of Structural Cross-Sectional Area Estimate by using Interval Method for Allowable Stress Design

  • This study presents the so-called Modified Allowable Stress Design (MASD) method for structural designs. The objective of this study is to qualitatively estimate uncertainties of tensile steel member's cross-sectional structural designs and find the optimal resulting design which can resist all uncertainty cases. The design parameters are assumed to be interval associated with lower and upper bounds and consequently interval methods are implemented to non-stochastically produce design results including the structural uncertainties. By seeking optimal uncertainty combinations among interval parameters, engineers can qualitatively describe uncertain design solutions which were not considered in conventional structural designs. Under the assumption that structures have basically uncertainties like displacement responses, the safety range of resulting designs is represented by lower and upper bounds depending on given tolerance error and structural parameters. As a numerical example uncertain cross-sectional areas of members that can resist applied loads are investigated and it demonstrates that the present design method is superior to conventional allowable stress designs (ASD) with respect to a reliably structural safety as well as an economical material.

  • This paper presents the results of the structural analysis and optimal design of the ROV to be operated at 6000m depth in the ocean. This will be the first domestic deep-sea ROV operating with an AUV and a launcher equipped with robot arms and the current weight is about 3 ton. initial optimal dimension of the frame is determined based on the stress analysis using FEA code ANSYS and design sensitivity and optimization results. The current design is the initial design and there is a possibility to change the design according to the modification of material, equipments and array of structure.

In conventional SDM (structural dynamics modification) method, the layout of modifying substructures position is first fixed and at that condition the structural optimization is performed by using the substructures size and/or material property as design parameters. But in this paper as a design variable substructures global translational and rotational position is treated. For effective structural modification the eigenvalue sensitivity with respect to that design parameter is derived based on measured frequency response function. The optimal structural modification is calculated by combining eigenvalue sensitivities and eigenvalue reanalysis technique iteratively. Numerical examples are presented to the case of beam stiffener optimization to raise the natural frequency of plate.

Optimal placement and tuning of multiple tuned mass dampers for suppressing multi-mode structural response

  • The optimal design of multiple tuned mass dampers (multiple TMD's) to suppress multi-mode structural response of beams and floor structures was investigated. A new method using a numerical optimizer, which can effectively handle a large number of design variables, was employed to search for both optimal placement and tuning of TMD's for these structures under wide-band loading. The first design problem considered was vibration control of a simple beam using 10 TMD's. The results confirmed that for structures with widelyspaced natural frequencies, multiple TMD's can be adequately designed by treating each structural vibration mode as an equivalent SDOF system. Next, the control of a beam structure with two closely-spaced natural frequencies was investigated. The results showed that the most effective multiple TMD's have their natural frequencies distributed over a range covering the two controlled structural frequencies and have low damping ratios. Moreover, a single TMD can also be made effective in controlling two modes with closely spaced frequencies by a newly identified control mechanism, but the effectiveness can be greatly impaired when the loading position changes. Finally, a realistic problem of a large floor structure with 5 closely spaced frequencies was presented. The acceleration responses at 5 positions on the floor excited by 3 wide-band forces were simultaneously suppressed using 10 TMD's. The obtained multiple TMD's were shown to be very effective and robust.

Occupant comfort evaluation and wind-induced serviceability design optimization of tall buildings

  • This paper presents an integrated wind-induced dynamic analysis and computer-based design optimization technique for minimizing the structural cost of general tall buildings subject to static and dynamic serviceability design criteria. Once the wind-induced dynamic response of a tall building structure is accurately determined and the optimal serviceability design problem is explicitly formulated, a rigorously derived Optimality Criteria (OC) method is to be developed to achieve the optimal distribution of element stiffness of the structural system satisfying the wind-induced drift and acceleration design constraints. The effectiveness and practicality of the optimal design technique are illustrated by a full-scale 60-story building with complex 3D mode shapes. Both peak resultant acceleration criteria and frequency dependent modal acceleration criteria are considered and their influences on the optimization results are highlighted. Results have shown that the use of various acceleration criteria has different implications in the habitability evaluations and subsequently different optimal design solutions. The computer based optimization technique provides a powerful tool for the lateral drift and occupant comfort design of tall building structures.
