  • There were many attempts to reduce noise behind the noise barrier using active control techniques. Omoto(1993) Shao(1997) and Yang(2001) tried to actively control the diffracted noise behind the barrier and main concerns were about the arrangement methods for the control sources. Baek (2004) tried to get better results using the simulated annealing method and the sequential searching technique. The main goal of this study is to develop and compare the performance of several optimization techniques including those mentioned above, hybrid version of simulated annealing and genetic algorithm for the optimal control source positions of active noise barrier system. The simulation results show fairly similar performance lot the small size of searching problem. However, as the number of control sources are increased, the performance of simulated annealing algorithm and genetic algorithm are better than the others. Simulations are also made to show the performance of the selected optimal control source positions not only at the receiver position but at the surrounding volume of the receiver position and plotted the noise reduction level in 3-D.

  • This study was conducted to derive optimal design floods by generalized gamma distribution model of the annual maximum series at eight watersheds along Geum, Yeongsan and Seomjin river systems. Design floods obtained by different methods for evaluation of parameters and for plotting positions in the generalized gamma distribution model were compared by the relative mean errors and graphical fit along with 95% confidence limits plotted on gamma probability paper. The results were analyzed and summarized as follows. 1. Basic statistics and parameters were calculated by the generalized gamma distribution model using different methods for parameters. 2. Design floods according to the return periods were obtained by different methods for evaluation of parameters and for plotting positions in the generalized gamma distribution model. 3. It was found that design floods derived by sundry averages method for parameters and Cunnane method for plotting position in the generalized gamma distribution are much closer to those of the observed data in comparison with those obtained by the other methods for parameters and for plotting positions from the viewpoint of relative mean errors. 4. Reliability of design floods derived by sundry averages method in the generalized gamma distribution was acknowledged within 95% confidence interval.

  • The syntactic analysis for the practical machine translation should be able to analyze a long sentence, but the long sentence analysis is a critical problem because of its high analysis complexity. In this paper a sentence segmentation method is proposed for an efficient analysis of a long sentence and the method of determining optimal sentence segmentation positions using statistical information and genetic learning is introduced. It consists of two modules: (1) decomposable position determination which uses lexical contextual constraints acquired from a training data tagged with segmentation positions. (2) segmentation position selection by the selection function of which the weights of parameters are determined through genetic learning, which selects safe segmentation positions with enhancing the analysis efficiency as much as possible. The safe segmentation by the proposed sentence segmentation method and the efficiency enhancement of the analysis are presented through experiments.

  • To determine the satellite orbital positions under consideration of interference caused by inter-satellite systems is one of the most important issues in terms of optimal usage of satellite network resources. In this paper, we present the orbital positioning method for a new satellite to minimize inter-satellite system interference effect in the fixed satellite communication using a new method. Through the computer simulation, it is clear that the proposed method is suitable to determine the satellite orbital positions.

  • We consider the optimization problem of the geostationary satellite orbital positions. which is very fundamental and important in setting up the new satellite launching plan. We convert the problem into a discrete optimization problem. However, the converted problem is too complex to find an optimal solution. Therefore, we develope the solution procedures using simulated annealing technique. The results of applying our method to some examples are reported.

  • This study was conducted to derive optimal design floods by Generalized Extreme-value(GEV) distribution for the annual maximum series at ten watersheds along Han, Nagdong, Geum, Yeongsan and Seomjin river systems. Adequacy for the analysis of flood data used in this study was established by the tests of Independence, Homogeneity, detection of Outliers. L-coefficient of variation, L-skewness and L-kurtosis were calculated by L-moment ratio respectively. Parameters were estimated by the Methods of Moments and L-Moments. Design floods obtained by Methods of Moments and L-Moments using different methods for plotting positions in GEV distribution were compared by the relative mean and relative absolute error. It was found that design floods derived by the method of L-moments using weibull plotting position formula in GEV distribution are much closer to those of the observed data in comparison with those obtained by method of moments using different formulas for plotting positions in view of relative mean and relative absolute error.

  • Many of steel structures having little internal damping consist of stiffened plates. In case that viscoelastic materials are adhered to the stiffened plates for the reduction of structure-borne noise, their effects are varied by the adhered position and dynamic characteristics of the structures as well as their material properties and adhered amount. In this paper, sound reduction effects of viscoelastic materials partially adhered to the different positions of a stiffened steel plate have been investigated by the measurement of vibratory velocity and sound intensity. The results show that optimal adherent positions of viscoelastic materials to reduce sound radiation power are the loop areas of modes.

  • This paper deals with a continuous-review two-echelon inventory model with one-for-one replenishment and Poisson demand where transshipments among retailers are allowed. Two classes of inventory systems are considered by the number of distribution centers(DCs) which provide each retailor with inventory items. 1:N class inventory system and M:N class inventory system respectively. Two-phase model is constructed to find out the optimal inventory positions which minimize supply chain costs. Approximations for customer service levels of the system are evaluated in the first phase, and the optimal inventory positions are found subject to the constraints for service level in the second phase. Simulation tests are performed to assure the effectiveness of the proposed model. The effect of transshipment is evaluated.

  • An optimal design technique is used as a systematic approach to analyze the worst case of a circulating type ropeway for a given geometry and operating conditions. Worst case is meant here the case when the positions and weights of the cars are so conditioned that the minimum of all the reaction forces between the main rope and the towers is minimum. In the course of this study, a general theory for the deflections and tensions of the main rope were also derived taking into account of the variation of the weights and positions of the individual cars. And through an analysis of example ropeways, some general conditions for the worst case are deduced.

  • It is very difficult to solve mathematically the optimal control problem for non - linear mobile robots to move to target points with minimum energy related to velocity, acceleration and angular velocity in minimum time. This paper proposes a method to obtain optimal control gains with which mobile robots move with minimum energy related to velocity, acceleration and angular velocity in minimum time using genetic algorithms. Mobile robots are non - linear systems so that their optimal control gains depend on initial positions. Hence initial positions are divided into some partition points and optimal control gains are obtained at each partition point with genetical algorithms. These optimal control gains are used to train neural networks that generate proper control gains at arbitrary initial position. Finally computer simulation studies have been conducted to verify the effectiveness of the method proposed in this paper.
