Water desalination by membrane distillation using PVDF-HFP hollow fiber membranes

  • Poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene), PVDF-HFP, hollow fiber membranes were prepared by the dry/wet spinning technique using different polyethylene glycol (PEG) concentrations as non-solvent additive in the dope solution. Two different PEG concentrations (3 and 5 wt.%). The morphology and structural characteristics of the hollow fiber membranes were studied by means of optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy (AFM) and void volume fraction. The experimental permeate flux and the salt (NaCl) rejection factor were determined using direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD) process. An increase of the PEG content in the spinning solution resulted in a faster coagulation of the PVDF-HFP copolymer and a transition of the cross-section internal layer structure from a sponge-type structure to a finger-type structure. Pore size, nodule size and roughness parameters of both the internal and external hollow fiber surfaces were determined by AFM. It was observed that both the pore size and roughness of the internal surface of the hollow fibers enhanced with increasing the PEG concentration, whereas no change was observed at the outer surface. The void volume fraction increased with the increase of the PEG content in the spinning solution resulting in a higher DCMD flux and a smaller salt rejection factor.

  • 작은 고체 분체들은 피커링 유화 체계에서 안정화제로 작용하는 것은 이미 알려진 사실이다. 이 연구에서 우리는 알킬실란 처리 $TiO_2$와 n-헥실알코올, 수계로 안정한 피커링 에멀젼을 제조하였다. $TiO_2$ 입자에 의해 안정화된 피커링 에멀젼을 제조하기 위한 최적의 조건은 $TiO_2$ 입자의 양과 수상/유상의 비에 의해 결정된다. 피커링 에멀젼의 형태는 물과 n-헥실알코올에 대한 입자들의 젖음성에 의존된다. 피커링 에멀젼은 $TiO_2$가 5.00 wt%, 오일과 수상의 비가 3 : 7인 경우에 가장 안정하였다. 피커링 에멀젼을 형판으로 하여 무기 전조체를 졸-겔 공정에 의해 다공성 분체들이 합성되었다. 합성된 다공성 분체들은 광학 현미경, SEM, BET, XRD 및 EDS에 의해 확인되었다.

북서태평양에서의 해수의 광학적 성질 (OPTICAL PROPERTIES Of SEA WATER IN THE NORTHWEST PACIFIC)

  • 1976년 9월 20일 부터 24일 사이에 북서태평양(Kamchatka 근해에서 투명도, 태양광선의 적색광(과장 : 600\~620\;nm)에 대한 표면조도 및 수심별 수중조도와 태양고도, 기온 및 표층수온 등을 조사한 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 1. 본 조사해역의 평균투명도는 $10.6m(9\~l2m)\$로 나타났다. 2. 태양광선의 적색광에 대한 해수의 흡수계수는 $0.178\~0.376$(평균 0.278)였다. 3. 적색광에 대한 해수의 흡수계수 m와 투명도 D와의 관계는 m=3.347/D로 나타났다. 4. 관측된 평균기온은 $9.49^{\circ}C(7.8-12.6^{\circ}C)$ 였고, 평균표층수온은 $6.58^{\circ}(5.8-7.6^{\circ}C$)로 나타났다. 5. m층에서 적색광에 대한 수중투과율은 수심 5 m층에서 표면창의 $6.45\~23.5\%$(평균 $16.36\%$), 수심 10 m층에서는 $1.38\~7.31포$(평균 $3.65\%$)였고, 수심 20 m층에서는 $0.048\~0.647\% $(평균 0.276\%)로 나타났다.

베리어 필름이 양자점 필름의 광특성에 미치는 영향 (Effects of barrier film on optical properties of quantum dot film)

  • 양자점은 산소와 수분에 취약하기 때문에 수분과 산소를 막아줄 수 있는 베리어 특성을 가진 제품을 이용하여 샌드위치 형식 양자점 층을 감싸는 형태로 제조하여 양자점의 광학적 신회성을 평가하였다. 다른 보호막이 없는 양자점 레진으로만 이루어진 필름, 양자점 필름과 PET를 합지한 필름 및 베리어 필름을 합지한 양자점 필름, 3가지를 이용하여 온도 60℃, 습도 90 %인 고온고습 조건에서 650시간 동안 변화를 평가를 진행하였다. 베리어 필름과 합지한 양자점 필름 제품은 휘도와 CIE x 및 CIE y 값이 유지되는 반면 PET와 합지한 양자점 필름 제품은 휘도 8 %, CIE x 2 % 및 CIE y 8 %가 낮아졌다. 또한 수분과 산소에 그대로 노출되었던 양자점 필름 제품은 측정 전부터 산화되어 낮게 측정되었으며 최종적으로 휘도 12 %, CIE x 9 % 및 CIE y 14 %가 낮게 측정되었다.

Quenching Effect in an Optical Fiber Type Small Size Dosimeter Irradiated with 290 MeV·u-1 Carbon Ions

  • Background: We are developing a small size dosimeter for dose estimation in particle therapies. The developed dosimeter is an optical fiber based dosimeter mounting an radiation induced luminescence material, such as an OSL or a scintillator, at a tip. These materials generally suffer from the quenching effect under high LET particle irradiation. Materials and Methods: We fabricated two types of the small size dosimeters. They used an OSL material Eu:BaFBr and a BGO scintillator. Carbon ions were irradiated into the fabricated dosimeters at Heavy Ion Medical Accelerator in Chiba (HIMAC). The small size dosimeters were set behind the water equivalent acrylic phantom. Bragg peak was observed by changing the phantom thickness. An ion chamber was also placed near the small size dosimeters as a reference. Results and Discussion: Eu:BaFBr and BGO dosimeters showed a Bragg peak at the same thickness as the ion chamber. Under high LET particle irradiation, the response of the luminescence-based small size dosimeters deteriorated compared with that of the ion chamber due to the quenching effect. We confirmed the luminescence efficiency of Eu:BaFBr and BGO decrease with the LET. The reduction coefficient of luminescence efficiency was different between the BGO and the Eu:BaFBr. The LET can be determined from the luminescence ratio between Eu:BaFBr and BGO, and the dosimeter response can be corrected. Conclusion: We evaluated the LET dependence of the luminescence efficiency of the BGO and Eu:BaFBr as the quenching effect. We propose and discuss the correction of the quenching effect using the signal intensity ratio of the both materials. Although the correction precision is not sufficient, feasibility of the proposed correction method is proved through basic experiments.

  • Numerous articles under the study and the examination of heavy metals in human teeth have been published in recent years. The heavy metal poisoning is a widespread issue emerged in toxicology area these days. It has been discovered that long-term exposure to heavy metals typically present in traces, in our everyday meals, drinking water, and in the environment as pollution causes heavy metal poisoning in human beings. Industrial effluents, Coal and Oil, as well as a variety of consumer items, such as cosmetics, can all cause this type of exposure. Teeth, which are often thought of as exoskeleton parts, store heavy metals with a high affinity and represent long-term exposure information. In this study, we have chosen and examined the sections of dentine instead, then examined the entire tooth. We have combined the work done on the examination of heavy metals in human teeth using several instrumental approaches e.g. "Optical Spectroscopic Techniques" to detect elemental profile of human teeth in the current study.

생강 전분과 옥수수 가교 전분의 이화학적 성질 비교 (Comparison of Some Physicochemical Properties of Ginger Root and Cross-linked Corn Starches)

  • 생강전분의 몇 가지 물리화학적 성질을 옥수수 가교 전분과 비교 검토하였다. 생강전분은 아밀로스 함량이 23.5%, 물결합 능력이 99.1%이었고 B형의 X-ray 회절도를 보였다. 생강 전분의 광투과도는 $70^{\circ}C$ 이후에 증가하였고 옥수수 가교 전분의 swelling power와 용해도는 $90^{\circ}C$까지 아주 낮은 값을 보였으며, 알카리에 대하여도 안정하였다. 아밀로그라피에 의한 생강전분 (7%)의 초기 호화온도는 $81.5^{\circ}C$ 이었고, 옥수수 가교전분과 같이 안정한 Paste를 보였다.

연속회분식반응기 공정의 하이드로사이클론 도입 하수처리 최적 운전특성 (Optimal Operational Characteristics of Wastewater Treatment Using Hydrocyclone in a Sequencing Batch Reactor Process)

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the operational characteristics of wastewater treatment using Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) with Aerobic Granular Sludge (AGS) separator in the pilot plant. Pilot plant experiments were conducted using SBR with AGS separator and pollution removal efficiencies were evaluated based on the operational condition and surface properties of AGS. The results of the operation on water quality of the effluent showed that the average concentration of total organic carbon, suspended solids, nitrogen, and phosphorus was 6.89 mg/L, 7.33 mg/L, 7.33 mg/L, and 0.2 mg/L, respectively. All these concentrations complied the effluent standard in Korea. The concentration of mixed liquor suspended solid (MLSS) fluctuated, but the AGS/MLSS ratio was constant at 86.5±1.3%. Although the AGS/MLSS ratio was constant, sludge volume index improved. These results suggested that the particle discharged fine sludge and increased the AGS praticle size in the AGS. Optical microscopy revealed the presence of dense AGS at the end of the operation, and particles of > 0.6 mm were found. Compared to those of belt-type AGS separator, the required area and power consumption of the hydrocyclone-type AGS separator were reduced by 27.5% and 83.8%, respectively.

Visible light assisted photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue dye using Ni doped Co-Zn nanoferrites

  • Nickel substituted cobalt-zinc ferrite nanoparticles with composition Co0.5Zn0.5NixFe2-xO4 (x = 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1.0) were synthesized using a wet chemical method named citrate precursor method. Various characterizations of the prepared nanoferrites were done using X-ray powder diffractometry (XRD), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), UV visible spectroscopy and Fourier transform spectroscopy technique (FT-IR). XRD confirmed the formation of cubic spinel structure of the samples with single phase having one characteristic peak at (311). The value of optical band gap (Eg) was found to decrease with Ni substitution and have values in the range 2.30eV to 1.69eV. A Fenton-type system was created by photocatalytic activity using source of visible light for removal of methylene blue dye. Observations revealed increase in the degradation of methylene blue dye with increasing nickel content in the samples. The degradation percentage was increased from 77.32% for x = 0.25 to 90.16% for x = 1.0 in one hour under the irradiation of visible light. Also, the degradation process was found to have pseudo first order kinetics model. Hence, it can be observed that synthesized nickel doped cobalt-zinc ferrites have good capability for water purification and its degradation efficiency enhanced with increase in nickel concentration.

가우스형 에바네슨트파의 광압에 의한 Mie 입자 결합체들의 회전 (Optically induced rotation of combined Mie particles within an evanescent field of a gaussian beam)

  • 파장이 532nm인 선형 파극된 Nd:YAG 레이저 광속을 Gadolimium Gallium Garnet 프리즘 면에서 전반시킬 때 형성된 에바네슨트파 석에 위차한 Mie 입자 결합체들이 광압에 의해 회전하는 것을 관찰하였다. 가우스 광속에 의한 에바슨트파의 최대 강도 지점에서 벗어난 곳에 위치한 3~5$\mu\textrm{m}$ 크기의 라텍스 또는 효모 결합체들이 0.1~1 rpm의 속도로 회전하엿는데, 두입자의 결합체는 광속의 진행 방향과 나란해질 때 회전이 멈추었으나 세입자 이상의 결합체들은 계속 회전하는 것을 볼 수 있었다. 본 실험 결과는 근접장 영역에서 에바네슨트파의 광압에 의한 마이크로 모터의 제작 가능성을 보여준다.
