  • Haze is a factor that degrades the performance of various image processing algorithms, such as those for detection, tracking, and recognition using an electro-optical sensor. For robust operation of an electro-optical sensor-based unmanned system used outdoors, an algorithm capable of effectively removing haze is needed. As a haze removal method using a single electro-optical sensor, the dark channel prior using statistical properties of the electro-optical sensor is most widely known. Previous methods used a square filter in the process of obtaining a transmission using the dark channel prior. When a square filter is used, the effect of removing haze becomes smaller as the size of the filter becomes larger. When the size of the filter becomes excessively small, over-saturation occurs, and color information in the image is lost. Since the size of the filter greatly affects the performance of the algorithm, a relatively large filter is generally used, or a small filter is used so that no over-saturation occurs, depending on the image. In this paper, we propose an improved haze removal method using color image segmentation. The parameters of the color image segmentation are automatically set according to the information complexity of the image, and the over-saturation phenomenon does not occur by estimating the amount of transmission based on the parameters.

  • In this paper, We have proposed an Heterodyne technique to generate millimeter-wave signal. Microwave signals in cellular broadband mobile communication networks and distributed networks can favorably be generated and distributed by optical techniques. In principle, these techniques have already been investigated for optical control of phase-array antennas, characterization of photo-detector and phase locking of millimeter-wave oscillators and now being applied to wireless communications. The generation and transmission of millimeter-wave radio signals by optical means is of interest for future pico-cell broadband mobile communication system, especially for systems operating at frequencies of 300GHz.

  • The compensation characteristics of the distorted WDM channels compensated for by dispersion management (DM) and optical phase conjugation in the long-haul (50 fiber spans ${\times}80km$) transmission link with the randomly distributed single mode fiber (SMF) length and residual dispersion per spans (RDPS) are investigated as a function of the arrangement of SMF and dispersion compensating fiber (DCF) and the control position of net residual dispersion (NRD). It is confirmed that the compensation effect of the distorted WDM channels strongly depends on the arragement of SMF and DCF, rather than the control position of NRD.

  • Using a indium zinc oxide (IZO) alloy target with a ratio of 90:10 in wt%, highly transparent conducting oxide (TCO) thin films are prepared on polyethersulfone (PES) substrates by lowfrequency (LF) magnetron sputtering system. These films have amorphous structures with excellent electrical stability, surface uniformity and high optical transmittance. Experiments were carried out as a function of applied voltage. At optimal deposition conditions, thin films of IZO with a sheet resistance of 29 ohm/sq. and an optical transmission of over 82 % in the visible spectrum range were achieved. The IZO thin films fabricated by this method do not require substrate heating during the film preparation or any additional post-deposition annealing treatment.

  • Efficient power transmission from a single mode fiber to a thin-film waveguide devices is one of the most fundamental and inevitable subject that should be first solved toward the realization of the integrated optic system. In this paper, fiber-waveguide coupling structure is considered and the large mismatch of field profiles at the fiber-waveguide interface is well avoided by using to the coupling guide which is intentionally developed on the top of the thin-film guuide. From the simulation, the taper-type structure are shown to be easier realizeable than the uniform one, since optical coupling between the guides in the latter has a stronger tolerance to the deviation of waveguide parameters.

  • An improved low coherence interferometer system and a new analysis method for the accurate measurement of the optical path difference error of an AWG (Arrayed-Waveguide Grating) are described. The use of software simplifies the experimental setup by eliminating the hardware (clock generator). In addition, the actual distances between the peak positions of the adjacent interference signals are calculated using interpolation methods. The wavelength transmission characteristics of the AWG are calculated assuming the measured phase errors. The calculated AWG characteristic is quite similar to the actual measurement result, confirming accuracy of the proposed measurement setup.

  • Visible light communication (VLC) offers communication function in addition to illumination. Because the signal communication capacity per cable is 1,000 times compared to the power line communication (PLC), optical fiber is being advertised as the basis of the information and communication. Also dimming control of LED is an important component needed to provide energy savings and quality of life. This study configured multi-hop VLC system model in a building using optical fiber and analyzed the power performance of two of modulations using dimming techniques. The transmission power and received power were used to compare the power performance in multi-hop VLC environments.

  • We propose a novel structure of wavelength selective optical add/drop filter comprising two tap couplers and a fiber Bragg grating. The device has unique features including a simpler structure and a lower cost implementation as compared with existing device for the same operation. The filter performance has been measured and analyzed, experimentally. The implemented prototype filter shows good performance with nocrosstalk power penalty in a 155Mbps per channel wavelengthdivisionmultiplexing transmission system but suffers from a relatively high loss of 3.5㏈ and 21㏈ for transmitted and dropped channel, respectively. While the dropped channel extinction ratio was more than 15㏈, the transmitted channel extinction ratio was more than 26㏈.
