  • We demonstrate an optical asynchronous transfer mode/wavelength division multiplexing (OATM/WDM) optical access network, using a router based on an optical header decoder to conduct next-generation communications. The router consists of a decoder or hardware analysis processing of the header bit and switches. The router in the OATM/WDM optical access network is a key technology by which to satisfy subscribers’ requests, including reliability, cost efficiency, high speed, large-capacity transmission, and elevated information security. In this study, we carry out experiments in which a header decoder delivers to 16 and 32 subscribers with a single wavelength in the router. These experiments confirm the decoder’s successful operation via hardware using 4 and 5 header bits. We propose that this system may significantly contribute toward the realization of an optical access network that provides high-quality service to subscribers of next-generation communications.

  • Subpicosecond all-optical switching method based on the simultaneous two-photon coherence exchange is proposed and numerically demonstrated. The optical switching mechanism is based on the optical field induced dark resonance swapping via nondegenerate four-wave mixing processes. For potential applications of ultrafast all-optical switching in fiber-optic communications, 10-THz channel number independent quantum router is discussed.

  • One of the key components to accomplish WDM all-optical network is an arrayed waveguide grating router. The spectral characterisitc of the ypeical arrayed waveguide grating rouger has parabolic shape, hence the bandwidth is limited. The spectral response of an optical filter should be as flat as possible for the reliable operation of the syste, because the center frequency of the optical source could be deviated in the actual system. In order to acquire these characteristics, we propose and design a new type of the arrayed waveguide grating router with a flat passband using the Fourier optics concept. The BPM simulation results of the new arrayed waveguide grating router with the flat passband show that the bandwideth is 0.8 nm at -1 dB, instertion loss about 6 dB, and the crosstalk less than -23 dB fro each cnannel, which is 1.6 nm(200 GHz) separated from the adjacent channel around 1550 nm wavelength range.

  • Presently, optical burst switching (OBS) technology is under study as a promising solution for the backbone of the optical Internet in the near future because OBS eliminates the optical buffer problem at the switching node with the help of no optical/electro/optical conversion and guarantees class of service without any buffering. To implement the OBS network, there are a lot of challenging issues to be solved. The edge router, burst offset time management, and burst assembly mechanism are critical issues. In addition, the core router needs data burst and control header packet scheduling, a protection and restoration mechanism, and a contention resolution scheme. In this paper, we focus on the burst assembly mechanism. We present a novel data burst generation algorithm that uses hysteresis characteristics in the queueing model for the ingress edge node in optical burst switching networks. Simulation with Poisson and self-similar traffic models shows that this algorithm adaptively changes the data burst size according to the offered load and offers high average data burst utilization with a lower timer operation. It also reduces the possibility of a continuous blocking problem in the bandwidth reservation request, limits the maximum queueing delay, and minimizes the required burst size by lifting up data burst utilization for bursty input IP traffic.

  • We propose a new encoder/decoders based on an tune able wavelength converter(TWC) and an arrayed waveguide grating(AWG) router for large capacity optical CDMA networks. The proposed encoder/decoder treats codewords of wavelength/time 2-D code simultaneously using the dynamic code allocation property of the TWC and the cyclic property of the AWG router, and multiple subscribers can share the encoder/decoder in networks. Feasibility of the structure of the proposed encoder/decoder for dynamic code allocation is tested through simulations using two wavelength/time 2-D codes, which are the generalized multi-wavelength prime code(GMWPC) and the generalized multi-wavelength Reed-Solomon code(GMWRSC). Test results show that the proposed encoder/decoder can increase the channel efficiency not only by increasing the number of simultaneous users without any multiple-access interference but by using a relatively short length CDMA codes.

  • A four-channel selective microwave filter was demonstrated incorporating an optical resonator router, which is constructed by integrating a $1{\times}4$ space switch with an arrayed ring filters featuring different free spectral ranges. The center frequency of each channel was determined by the FSR of the corresponding ring resonator, and the four channels centered at 10 GHz, 16 GHz, 18 GHz and 20 GHz were individually selected to provide a bandpass filtering via the control voltage applied to the switched resonator.

  • With high bandwidth, low interference, and low power consumption, optical network-on-chip (ONoC) has emerged as a highly efficient interconnection for the future generation of multicore system on chips. In this paper, we propose a new path-setup method for ONoC to mitigate contentions, such as packets, by recycling the setup packet halfway to the destination. A new, strictly non-blocking $6{\times}6$ optical router is designed to support the new method. The simulation results show the new path-setup method increases the throughput by 52.03%, 41.94%, and 36.47% under uniform, hotspot-I, and hotspot-II traffic patterns, respectively. The end-to-end delay performance is also improved.

  • A passband-flattening technique based on Fourier optics concept for phased-array wavelength router is presented. For easy control of optical power in each waveguide without phase correction, misaligned array waveguides are used. BPM simulation results indicate that flat passband is as wide as 75 % of the channel spacing with the insertion loss penalty of about 6 dB and with the crosstalk of about -28 dB.
