  • We proposed a novel temperature sensor based on the phenomena that the phase difference between principal polarization states in an optical retarder is a function of temperature. The polarization state of an optical beam is changed as it passes through the optical retarder, with the change dependent on the temperature. The temperature of the optical retarder is determined by comparison of the power difference between principal polarization states. A temperature sensor was successfully implemented using a polarization maintaining fiber of length 100 mm as the optical retarder. The change rate of phase difference on temperature was 0.236$^{\circ}C$$_{-1}$ and the measurement error was $\pm$0.038$^{\circ}C$ over the temperature region of -2.6$^{\circ}C$~3.4$^{\circ}C$.

  • A wavemeter was realized using the phenomena that the phase lag between principal polarization states in an optical retarder is a function of wavelength. The change in the polarization state of the optical beam as it passes through the optical retarder is dependent on wavelength. The wavelength of the optical beam is determined by comparing the power difference between principal polarization states. A prototype wavemeter was successfully implemented using a polarization maintaining fiber with birefringence $3\times10^{-4}$ and length 100 mm as the optical retarder. The measurement resolution was 0.08 nm over a wavelength region of 1554.38 nm-1557.l9 nm, which agreed well with theoretically calculated results. In addition, the dependence of operating characteristics on temperature was analyzed theoretically and experimentally.mentally.

  • We have studied the optical properties of the biaxial film such as fast axis, retardance and the change of polarization state between crossed polarizer using dual rotating retarder polarimeter. We have developed a novel simulation model, which could explain well the experimental results, and found that it could be used to optimize the compensation film in LCD for improving wide-viewing property.

  • We have studied electro-optic characteristics of reflective $45^{\circ}$ twisted nematic liquid crystal display which implement the new LC orientation using of in-cell retarder film. For the embodiment of reflective liquid crystal display, essentially the optic compensation films was always needed and attached to the outside of glass substrate. In our study, these optic compensation film were not employed in reflective LC cell. On other hand we have employed the in-cell retarder to substitute the optic compensation film and were able to orient the LC molecules using this in-cell retarder. So we have developed the reflective LC cell that has good optical performances without any additional coating process on the in-cell retarder.

  • A near-normal-incidence ellipsometer (NNIE) is suggested as an optical critical dimension (OCD) measurement system that is highly sensitive to the bottom defect of a sample with high-aspect-ratio structured patterns. Incident light passes through a polarizer and a phase retarder in sequence, and the reflected light from the sample also passes through them, but in reverse order. The operating principle of this NNIE, where a single polarizer and a single phase retarder are shared by the incident and reflected light, is studied, and a method to determine the ellipsometric constants from the measured intensities at proper combinations of the azimuthal angles of polarizer and retarder is presented.

  • We challenge to use reactive mesogen optical elements which can be coated inside LC cell. The reactive mesogens as retarder barrier requirements can be achieved between a high performance 2D mode and a low cross talk stereoscopic 3D mode. The fabrication of a 10.1" diagonal LCD which co-operates with a polarizer to from a parallax barrier, is described. In addition, the parallax barrier of reactive mesogens can easily control in mass production and can thus be coated as extremely LC cell, significantly reducing the thickness of LCD. Finally, we have successed to design a switchable 2D/3D displays using reactive mesogen optical elements which can be achieved 3D displays within glasses.

  • In this paper, the intrinsic birefringence and Faraday rotation of the single mode optical fiber have been investigated. On the analysis, the optical fiber has been modeled as a linear retarder and the intrinsic linear retardation of the fiber is approximatly found to be 2.57 deg/m from the measurement. Faraday ratation was analyzed as perturbation theory and Jones matrix.
