We implemented a CD signal processor operated on a CAV 48-speed CD-ROM drive into a VLSI. The CD signal processor is a mixed mode monolithic IC including servo-processor, data recovery, data-processor, and I-bit DAC. For servo signal processing, we included a DSP core, while, for CAV mode playback, we adopted a PLL with a wide recovery range. Data processor (DP) was designed to meet the yellow book specification.[2]So, the DP block consists of EFM demodulator, C1/C2 ECC block, audio processor and a block transferring data to an ATAPI chip. A modified Euclid's algorithm was used as a key equation solver for the ECC block To achieve the high-speed decoding, the RS decoder is operated by a pipelined method. Audio playability is increased by playing a CD-DA disc at the speed of 12X or 16X. For this, subcode sync and data are processed in the same way as main data processing. The overall performance of IC is verified by measuring a transfer rate from the innermost area of disc to the outermost area. At 48-speed, the operating frequency is 210 ㎒, and this chip is fabricated by 0.35 um STD90 cell library of Samsung Electronics.
A study on adhesion and wear resistance of VC(vanadium carbide) coating on die steels, STD11 and STD61, has been carried out. The VC coating on the die steels was made by immersing them in molten borax bath, a kind of TRD(thermo-reactive deposition and diffusion). Adhesion strength and wear resistance were investigated using scratch test, indentation test and plate-disc test(Ogoshi type) respectively. The influence of sliding distance on the amount of wear has been determined and dominant wear mechanisms has been characterized using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and EDS spectroscopy. The critical adhesion strength($L_c$) between VC coating layer and substrate(STD11) was increased to 60N($L_c$) in the scratch test. In the case of STD61, the strength increased to 24N. The wear resistance of VC coated die steels was excellent because the diffusion layer formed just below the coating layer. The dominant wear mechanism was identified as adhesive wear for VC coating die steels which were worn by combination of cracking and plucking of VC fragments and disc.
This paper presents a direct seek control algorithm for swing-arm type dual stage servo system that consists of a coarse actuator and a fine actuator. The proposed scheme is to design a control system that attenuates the effect of dynamic coupling between the two actuators so that the seek operation can be performed in a single-shot with stability. In an optical drive system with dual stage servo mechanism, the effect of dynamic coupling between the two actuators needs to be handled during the coarse seek operation due to its inherent structure. In an extreme case, the two actuators can collide each other, which leads to critical degradation of the seek performance. To handle this problem, our proposed control scheme is to generate the drive signals such that the two actuators behave as if they are a single fixed body. To this end, a feedforward controller and two feedback controllers are designed that enable the current drive system perform wide range of track seek. Simulation results are provided to show the validity and feasibility of our proposed algorithm.
This study was performed to analyze the antibacterial activity against food hazardous microorganisms and antimutagenic effects of Sanguisorba officinalis L. ethanol extracts on Salmonella Typhimurium TA100. The antibacterial activity was evaluated by paper disc diffusion assay, minimum inhibition concentration (MIC), and optical density of the culture with the ethanol extract for 24 hr. Antibacterial activity was tested with seven microorganisms including Escherichia coli, Escherichia coli O157:H7, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella Typhimurium, Listeria monocytogenes, Bacillus cereus, and Staphylococcus aureus. The paper disc diffusion assay showed distinct clear inhibition zones around the discs treated with the extract for five microorganisms, except Escherichia coli and Escherichia coli O157:H7. MIC values were 0.625-2.5 mg/mL for these five strains that showed clear zones. The time-kill assay was consistent with the results from the paper disc diffusion assay and MIC test. Additionally, antimutagenicity of the extract was determined using the Ames test. The ethanol extract at 5 mg/plate inhibited 72.42% and 89.85% of mutagenicity induced by 4-nitroquinoline 1-oxide and sodium azide, respectively. These results demonstrate that the ethanol extract from S. officinalis L. has remarkable antibacterial activity and antimutagenicity.
This thesis investigates the development of optical instruments in the 19th century, before the birth of the cinema, and the principle of the perception of moving images. For this purpose it traces the development stages of the optical instruments which demonstrated 'illusion of movement' from 1820s when the 'persistence of vision' had begun to be researched by scientists. Then, it examines the theory of the 'persistence of vision' or 'afterimage effect' known as the principle in the perception of illusion of movement produced from moving images. The optical instruments in the 19th century that presented the illusion of movement began with the Thaumatrope (double-sided picture disc), and appeared from the Phenakistiscope/Stroboscope (revolving disc), the Zoetrope (revolving drum) and the Praxinoscope (mirror-reflexive revolving drum), and in 1892 the Projection-Praxinoscope presented firstly the moving pictures (animation) on the screen. According to the research of psychology and physiology in the early 20th century it has been recognized that the 'afterimage effect' theory is not sufficient to explain the perception of illusion of movement from the moving images which is closely related to the particularity of the visual perception system of the human eyes. Since then, the Phi-phenomenon suggested 1912 by the Gestalt psychologist, Max Wertheimer (1880-1943), is regarded as the most persuasive theory until now, although it is still imperfect.
A optimal condition for the Ginkgo biloba extraction in ethanol and water binary solvent system has been proposed based on concentration of bilobalide and ginkgolide known as having a antimicrobial components in the range 5% to 70% ethanol in water at $80^{\circ}C$. Concentration of bilobalide as a single component of Ginkgo biloba leaves extract is the highest at the 60% ethanol and ginkgolide A and B is highest at 50% ethanol. Antimicrobial effect of Ginkgo biloba leaves extracts on the S. aureus was also examined by disc diffusion test and optical density test. In case of the disc diffusion test, the clean zone diameter was increased from 0.95 cm to 1.70 cm as ethanol concentration increased from 5 to 70%. However, over the 40% of ethanol concentration the antimicrobial effect was almost flat. Based on these results, we propose that the 40% of ethanol and 60% water solvent is most desirable for Ginkgo biloba extract considering vapor pressure problem in concentrating process after extraction. We introduced SEM and TEM to figure out the morphological change on the surface and inside body of S. aureus when Ginkgo biloba leaves extract was treated. After mixed with Ginkgo biloba leaves extract blast like blebs appeared on the surface of S. aureus cells and cell wall was not observed. From the these results, it seems that the Ginkgo biloba leaves extract including bilobalide and ginkgolide A, B prevent cell wall synthesis.

Super-resolution near-field structure (super-RENS) technology and solid immersion lens (SIL) based near-field (NF) technology have been expected as promising approaches to increase data capacity or areal density of optical disc. Super-RENS technology has been studied until now using mainly numerical aperture (NA) of 0.85 far-field optical system and possibility of tangential data density increment have been presented. NF technology has been studied with NA over 1 and presented demonstration of removable performance. To achieve much higher density, approach to increase NA of super-RENS by NF technology (Near-Field Super-Resolution, NFSR) can be a candidate and we think this technology would be advantageous compared to wavelength reduction or much higher NA increment of NF technology or much smaller effective optical spot size reduction of far-field super-resolution technology. In this paper we present readout result of ROM media having monotone pits using NF optical system with wavelength of 405nm and NA of 1.84 surface type SIL. GeSbTe material was used for super resolution active layer and pit length is 37.5nm which is shorter than resolution limit 55nm. We present the feasibility of NFSR technology by confirming the CNR threshold according to readout power (Pr) and CNR 33dB over threshold Pr.
Through the Korea-Germany joint project, a novel method, that is, an optical Corescanner (Stereophotogramrnetry) of acquisition, evaluation and display of struct-ural elements of drill cores has heen realized. AH scannable cores can he digitally stored on a storage device(dat tape, optical disc etc.) and available for further an-alysis using diverse software facilities. The use of this scanning technique was d-emonstrated on the cores derived from the metamorphosed sedimentary rocks in our country. Recent studies showed a great potential of using the Corescanner with high resolution not only for avoiding ambiguities of drill log interpretation due to the capability of accurate quantative analysis of structural elements, but also for replacing the cores themselves as a data-base one via completely copying of the core outlook.

Scratches are observed on a polymer cover-layer of near-field recording (NFR) media after a servo test with rotating disc. The scratches are formed by the collision of a solid immersion lens (SIL)-media. One of the possible ways to avoid the scratch problem is to coat a dielectric protective film on the polymer cover-layer which enhances the hardness of the surface. The surface with hard characteristics in the surface reduces the scratch problem in the cover-layer. Not only the mechanical properties but also the optical properties should be controlled. Specifically, the refractive index of the dielectric protective film should be matched with the polymer cover-layer not to lose light at the interface due to the difference of the refractive index. The refractive index of the dielectric film can be tailored by controlling process parameters during sputtering and matched with that of the polymer cover-layer.
The recent renaissance in controlled-stress rheometry has meant that more and more commercial models of this type of instrument have appeared in the (rheological) marketplace and many papers now deal with the results obtained by their use. It is therefore both timely and appropriate that this mode of rheometry should be reviewed for the sake of new and old users who are probably not be aware of its development. The history of controlled-stress measurements is therefore given, and the particular efforts of the late Jack Deer in the 1970s are chronicled, and then the later developments that have made it possible that such low torques can now be applied and such low rotational speeds measured. These have been mostly in the areas of air bearing and optical disc technologies. The typical results now obtained are illustrated.
