  • All-optical OR logic gate is realized by use of gain saturation and wavelength conversion in the semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOA). It is operated by the nonlinearity of the SOA gain and hence to obtain the sufficient gain saturation of the SOA, pump signals are amplified by an Er-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) at the input of the SOA. The operation characteristics of all-optical OR logic gate are successfully measured at 2.5 Gbit/s.

  • Pump wavelength dependence of the gain spectra was investigated by simulating the model of single-pumped fiber optical parametric amplifiers (FOPAs). Conditions for the single-pumped FOPAs having broad bandwidths with relatively large gains were optimized and the gain bandwidth was found to be as large as 146.4 nm when signal power and pump power were 316 nW and 7 W, respectively.

  • By using gain saturation of semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs), an all-optical AND gate at 10 Gb/s has been successfully demonstrated. Firstly, Boolean (equation omitted) has been obtained using the first SOA with signal B and clock injection. Then, the all-optical AND gate is achieved using the second SOA with signals A and (equation omitted) injection.

  • Erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs) have saturated the technological market but are still widely used in high-speed and long-distance communication systems. To overcome EDFA saturation and limitations, its erbium-doped fiber is co-doped with other materials such as zirconia and bismuth. This article demonstrates and compares the performance using three different fibers as the gain medium for zirconia-erbium-doped fibers (Zr-EDF), bismuth-erbium-doped fibers (Bi-EDF), and commercial silica-erbium-doped fibers (Si- EDF). The optical amplifier was configured with a double-pass amplification system, with a broadband mirror at the end of its configuration to allow double-pass operation in the system. The important parameters in amplifiers such as optical properties, optical amplification and noise values were also examined and discussed. All three fibers were 0.5 m long and entered with different input signals: 30 dBm for low input and 10 dBm for high input. Zr-EDF turned out to be the most relevant optical amplifier as it had the highest optical gain, longest transmission distance, highest average flatness gain with minimal jitter, and relevant noise figures suitable for the latest communication technology.

  • We derive joint probability density functions (JPDFs) for two adjacent data from direct-detection optical receivers in dense wavelength-division multiplexing systems. We show that the decision using two data per bit can increase the receiver sensitivity compared with the conventional decision. Our JPDFs can be used for software-defined optical receivers enhancing the receiver sensitivities for intensity-modulated channels.

  • We propose a filter-free wavelength conversion using a Mach-Zehnder interferometer with monolithically integrated $2{\times}2$ multimode interference semiconductor optical amplifiers (MMI-SOAs). The device has been optimized by considering a non-homogeneous carrier distribution due to the self-imaging properties of the MMI-SOA. Static measurements show an extinction ratio of up to 18 dB and an input signal rejection ratio of up to 20 dB.

  • Optical telecommunication has been growing at a rate that exceeds even the "Moore′s Law". However, while the electronic revolution has allowed everyone to have his/her own PC, the optical revolution is still confined to the long-haul network such that the individual end users are still connected to an electronic metro/access networks. However, given the rapid increase in the data traffic (e.g., multimedia), the optical edge that separates the individual end users from optical networks will eventually have to include the metro/acces networks. • This paper analyzes and accesses the gain of optically pumped surface-normal MQW optical amplifiers. The proposed amplifiers have the advantage of polarization independence, high coupling efficiency to and from optical fibers, and flexibility of operating wavelength. We analyzed the gain characteristics of 100 - 200-period MQWs and verified the dependence of a strained lattice and selective doping. Theoretical analysis of such MQWs showsa single-pass gain of 3 dB with broad operation bandwidth. A single-pass gain of 2.6 dB is obtained experimentally in an InGaAs/InGaAlAs MQW amplifier, which is compared with calculations. The use of Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) structure in an optical amplifier is a useful way to increase the gain, but causes a problem of narrow operation bandwidth when the single-pass gain is low. Therefore, a single-pass gain above 2to 3 dB is a prerequisite to achieve both a high gain and moderate operation bandwidth in FPI-structured opticalamplifiers. We have designed an FPI-structured surface-normal optical amplifier both with a high gain of broad operation bandwidth of 4.6mm, when a single-pass gain is 3 dB.
