  • We systematically investigated the optical properties of sub-micron sized methylammonium lead tribromide ($CH_3NH_3PbBr_3$) cubes in the range of 100 to 700 nm, which were prepared by a surfactant-free precipitation method. We found that despite the strong absorbance, their photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) is very low as 0.009~0.011 % for whole range of sizes. Surfactant-free synthesis approach results in nanocubes that has no surface passivating reagents (e.g. surfactants) on their surface. As-prepared particles contain a large number of surface defects that may cause the low PLQY. The role of the surface defects were investigated in their photoluminescence decay process, which can be correlated with the particle size. Larger particles are characterized by a slower decay rate compared to smaller particles due to a large number of surface defects in the smaller particles that trap more excitons in the fluorescence decay process. These experimental results provide new insights into the fundamental relationship between surface state and optical properties.

  • The spectrum for $0_{\circ}$, $90_{\circ}$-polarized light coincides with the spectrum for non-polarized light and also with the spectrum was observed in the LB film deposited using a fresh solution. And, the formation and dissociation of J-aggregates, anisotropic behavior was no longer observed in the heat treated merocyanine dyes LB films. But, in the optical absorption spectra of same LB films by UV irradiation at room temperature, their were observed only dissociation of J-aggregates, that is decrease of absorbance peak without change spectral shape. On the other hand, in the case of optical absorption spectra of the LB films by the heat treatment at $70^{\circ}C$ in the air, both of the shifted absorption bands decay and a monomer absorption peak of about 530 nm appears instead.

  • The optical loss is caused by reflection on the surface of the solar cell, without being absorbed inside the solar cell. Research is actively being conducted to reduce optical loss due to such reflection of light and to improve conversion efficiency of solar cells. In this paper, the surface of the FTO glass substrate was wet etched, and the structural characteristics of the tough surface were evaluated. In addition, optical properties on the surface were analyzed, etched using spectrometer. When light was introduced to a rough surface formed by etching, it was confirmed that the multiple reflections reduced the amount of light reflection from the surface, thereby increaseing the amount of light penetrating the glass substrate.

  • Effects of ethanol and/or some organic acid on the growth of some microorganism grown in Kimchi, Lactobacillus plantarum, Leuconostoc mesenteroides. Kluyveromyces marxianus, were identified and the cell injury was observed by measuring optical density at 260nm. When 0.0∼5.0% ethanol was added in the growth medium, the cell growth was inhibited depending on the concentration. Organic acids involving acetic, adipic and citric acid inhibited the growth of L. plantarum and Leu. mesenteroides, but K. marxianus, the yeast, was not at 0.1% of organic acid. When 2.0% of ethanol and 0.1% of organic acid were used, adipic acid was more effective on the growth inhibition. This inhibition of microbial growth seemed to be caused by the leakage of internal contents from microbes which were observed by the optical density at 260nm in the buffer supernatant. 5.0% of ethanol accelerated the optical density increase at 260nm in L. plantarum, Leu. mesenteroides and K. marxianus, but 2.0% of ethanol did not. 0.1% organic acid increased the absorbance of the supernatant in lactic bacteria, but not in yeast, K. marxianus. The measurement of absorbance at 260nm revealed that the cell injury increased when 2.0% of ethanol and/or 0.1% of organic acid. especially adipic acid were added.

  • Time-encoded near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) system is proposed, based on a near-infrared (NIR) swept laser source, for comparison to the conventional NIRS method using a detector-type spectrometer. The cavity of the NIR swept laser source consists of a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) with a gain region around 800 nm, and several fiber-optic components. To change the output wavelength in time using an applied electric radio-frequency signal, an acousto-optic tunable filter (AOTF) is introduced in the fiber ring cavity configuration. To demonstrate the feasibility of an NIR swept laser source for NIRS imaging, the spectroscopic comparison of two kinds of absorbance-measuring systems a detector-type spectrometer using a white light source, and a source-type spectrometer using an NIR swept laser is successfully performed with an NIR-absorbing dye.

  • The graphene oxide (GO) and graphene oxide quantum dots (GOQDs), which have gained research interest as new types of light-emitting materials, were synthesized by the modified Hummers method for oxidation of graphite flake and graphite nanoparticle. The optical properties of GO and GOQDs have been compared by mean of photoluminescence (PL), PL excitation (PLE), UV-vis absorbance, and time-resolved PL. The GO have an absorption peak at 229 nm and shoulder part at 310 nm, whereas the GOQDs show broad absorption with a gradual change up without any absorption peaks. The PL emission of GOQDs and GO showed the green color at 520 nm and the red color at 690 nm, respectively. The red emission of GO showed faster PL decay time than the green emission of GOQDs. In particular, the temporal PL profile of the GO showed redshift from 560 nm to 660 nm after the pump event.

  • At present, the index of chemical oxygen demand (COD) is widely used as an indicator of organic water pollution with biochemical oxygen demand (BOD). But, traditional COD measurement method are not only with various chemical reagents exhausted, but also long time consumed, the operation procedure and the modification are much professional. This paper reported a novel COD measurement system using double-beam and multiple wavelength analysis UV-VIS spectrometries. It consists of pulsed xenon lamp, two-way optical fiber, optical switch, spectrometer and main processor. Proposed COD measurement system obtains any spectral information of water sample (KHP standard sample and two river water and wastewater) and reference sample (distilled water) in the range of 200~520 nm, corresponding to the COD concentration from 0 to 300 mg/L through calculating the UV absorbance. The system show improved precision and can work continuously fast at time interval about 25 seconds.

  • In this study, we presented a newly synthesized pyrene-naphthalene diimide(NDI)-pyrene triad. The optical and structural properties were examined using various characterization techniques. A donor-acceptor-donor triad molecule exhibited a strong charge transfer, though there existed neither intramolecular nor intermolecular hydrogen bonding sites, due to the formation of preferential complementary complex between pyrene and NDI. Powder XRD measurement revealed a sharp and distinctive X-ray patterns, indicating the presence of microcrystalline-like structure. POM images showed anisotropic fingerprint texture similar to that of cholesteric phase, and SEM images showed numerous columnar structures with length of 1 to $10{\mu}m$. Above observation clearly demonstrated that ${\pi}$-complementary NDI-pyrene interactions in the traid was strong enough to form columnar aggregates in the long range.

  • ZnO nanorods were grown on $SiO_2$ coated Si wafers and glass by the hydrothermal method. The structural and optical properties variation of ZnO nanorods as a function of growing time was studied. ~10 nm-thick ZnO thin films deposited on substrates by rf magnetron sputtering were employed as seed layers. Zinc nitrate hexahydrate (0.05 M) and hexamethylenetetramine (0.05 M) mixed in DI water were used as a reaction solution. ZnO nanorods were respectively grown for 30 min, 1 h, 2 h, 3 h, and 4 h by maintaining the reactor at $90^{\circ}C$. Crystallinity of ZnO nanorods was analyzed by X-ray diffraction, and the morphology of nanorods was observed by a field emission scanning electron microscope. Transmittance and absorbance were measured by a UV-Vis spectrophotometer, and energy band gap and urbach energy were obtained from the data. Photoluminescence measurements were carried out using Nd-Yag laser (266 nm).

  • The effects of the growth temperature on the properties of ZnO thin films were investigated by using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry, and Hall measurements. The ZnO films were deposited by rf magnetron sputtering at various growth temperatures in the range of 100-$400{^{\circ}C}$. A strong c-axis preferred orientation is observed for all of the samples. As the growth temperature increases, the crystalline orientation of the ZnO (002) plane is not changed, but the full width at half maximum gets smaller. The dependence of the electron concentration, mobility, and resistivity on the growth temperature exhibits that the ZnO films have a higher electron concentration at higher temperatures, thus giving them a low resistivity. The optical transmittance and band gap energy, calculated from the spectra of optical absorbance, show a significant dependence on the growth temperature. As for the sample grown at $100{^{\circ}C}$, the average transmittance is about 90% in the visible wavelength range and the band gap is estimated to be 3.13 eV.
