  • A 10-year-old spayed female beagle dog presented with a 2-month history of third-eyelid elevation in the left eye (OS). Ophthalmic examination revealed slightly diminished corneal and palpebral reflexes along with exophthalmos in the OS. Schirmer's tear test and intraocular pressure values were within the normal range for the OS. Slit-lamp biomicroscopy revealed protrusion of the third eyelid and corneal opacity in the OS. Fundoscopy revealed a prominent black mass in the OS covering the optic nerve. Tapetal hyper-reflectivity was also observed around the mass. Ocular ultrasonography showed a 0.74 × 0.67 cm echogenic posterior segment mass around the optic nerve protruding into the retrobulbar space. Computed tomography revealed a contrast-enhanced soft tissue lesion in the posteromedial aspect of the left eyeball protruding into the retrobulbar region, and the optic nerve was suspected to be involved. No evidence of osteolytic changes in the adjacent bone or distant metastasis was observed. Enucleation was performed to prevent potential metastasis or local invasion of the mass and to relieve discomfort due to exposure to keratopathy resulting from lagophthalmos. Histopathological examination revealed a central choroidal melanocytoma extending into the optic nerve. No local recurrence was detected until 16 months postoperatively.

  • One of the most pressing and demanding issues today in the conditions of widespread transformation and digitalization of spheres of human activity is information security and ensuring the integrity of data. The main research and development in the field of information security is aimed at improving efficiency and rationalization. One of the main means of data transmission and operation of information complexes are fiber-optic systems. To date, there have been incidents of illegal intrusion and theft of information, passing through this type of communication. Thus, today there is a problem associated with insufficient information security in fiber-optic data transmission systems. One of the most effective tools to counter acts of illegal interference in systems are artificial intelligence and cryptographic algorithms of information protection. It is the symbiosis of these two tools that can qualitatively improve the level of information security in fiber-optic data transmission systems. Thus, the authors of this article pursue the goal associated with the description of an innovative system for protecting information from violations in fiber-optic data transmission systems based on the integration of intelligent cryptographic algorithms.

  • This paper dealt with the design guide of the conventional edge-lit backlight optic with which the on-axis luminance could be increased by trying to improve the light condensing efficiency of a bright enhancement film (BEF). First, the general design guide concerned with the backlight optic was proposed, and then its validness was experimentally proved by conducting design examples with haze controls of both diffuse film and microdot material printed on the backside of the light guide plate. Experimental results showed that the variation range of the on-axis luminance by the present approach was about $5{\sim}9%$, which would be by no means negligible in the practical application.

  • When the fiber Bragg gratings are embedded in a fiber-optic Sagnac loop for measuring temperature or strain, it is difficult to separate the Bragg wavelengths. The transmitted light is mixed with the reflected Bragg wavelengths in the photo-detector, working as noises. To suppress the noises, we placed the FBG sensors and a fiber-optic attenuator at asymmetric positions in the loop. With the arrangement the reflected light became much bigger than the transmitted light, enabling the separation of the reflected Bragg wavelengths with almost the same signal-to-noise ratio of the FBG sensors outside the loop.

  • In general, open-loop fiber-optic gyroscopes (FOG) are less stable than closed-loop FOGs but they offer simpler implementation. The typical operation time of line-of-sight (LOS) stabilization systems is a few seconds to one hour. In this paper, a open-loop fiber optic gyroscope (FOG) for LOS applications is designed and implemented. The design goal is aimed at implementing a low cost, compact FOG with low Angle Random Walk (ARW) (< $0.03deg/\sqrt{h}$) and bias instability (< 0.25deg/h). The FOG uses an open-loop all-fiber configuration with 100M PM fiber wound on a small diameter spool. In order to get the design goal, digital signal processing techniques for signal detection, modulation control and compensation are designed and implemented in FPGA.

  • We report on the development of a fiber optic hydrophone consists of a sensing Michelson interferometer and a compensating Mach-Zehnder interferometer for optical path length compensation. The double interferometer configuration has the following advantages: the hydrophone can be made more small; a laser source with a relatively short coherence length can be used; and the compensating interferometer can be located near the signal processing electronics, far away from the sensing interferometer and noise introduced by reference arm can be greatly reduced. The performance of the hydrophone is evaluated experimentally by immersing the sensing interferometer in a water tank to detect underwater acoustic signals generated by an acoustic wave projector. Experimental results show that over the frequency range of 1 to 4 kHz, the hydrophone has an almost flat response with an average normalized sensitivity of -302 dB re 1/ μ Pa.

  • This paper discusses on new two LCD technologies featured by the fast electro-optic response:one is polymer-stabilized FLCDs that exhibit V-shaped electro-optic (EO) switching called PSV-mode FLCDs with response time of 400 ${\mu}$ s; and the other is TN-mode LCDs that exhibit a frequency modulation response (called PM-TN LCDs)and a peculiar sensitivity to the high frequency component of driving voltage waveforms resulting in a short decay time constant of 5ms and an enhancement in the over-driving that yields short response time of 1ms between two gray levels.

  • Conventional hybrid aligned nematic liquid crystal display (HAN-LCD) has several advantages on low operating voltage, fast response time and rubbing free on one substrate. We have fabricated a new hybrid aligned nematic display driven by fringe field. The new device exhibits much wider viewing: angle than that of the conventional HAN mode, owing to almost in-plane rotation of the LC director. Furthermore, we have developed the device that reveals more efficient electro-optic characteristics by placing common electrode on top and bottom substrates. In this paper, the electro-optic characteristics of the novel cell are investigated.

  • Two types of fiber-optic sensors, EFPI(extrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometer) and FBG(fiber Bragg grating), have been investigated for measurement of thermal strain and temperature. The EFPI sensor is only for measurement of thermal strain and the FBG sensor is for simultaneous measurement of thermal strain and temperature. FBG temperature sensor was developed to measure strain-independent temperature. This sensor configuration consists of a single-fiber Bragg grating and capillary tube which makes it isolated from external strain. This sensor can then be used to compensate for the temperature cross sensitivity of a FBG strain sensor. These sensors are demonstrated by embedding them into a graphite/epoxy composite plate and by attaching them on aluminum rod and unsymmetric graphitelepoxy composite plate. All the tests were conducted in a thermal chamber with the temperature range $20-100^{\circ}C$. Results of strain measurements by fiber-optic sensors are compared with that from conventional resistive foil gauge attached on the surface.

  • We consider the Bernoulli two-armed bandit problem. It is well known that the my optic strategy is optimal when the prior distribution is concentrated at two points in the unit square. We investigate several cases in the unit square whether the my optic strategy is optimal or not. In general, the my optic strategy is not optimal when the prior distribution is not concentrated at two points in the unit square.
