  • Numerical methods for solving the state feedback control problem of linear time invariant system are presented in this paper. The methods are based on Haar wavelet approximation. The properties of Haar wavelet are first presented. The operational matrix of integration and its inverse matrix are then utilized to reduce the state feedback control problem to the solution of algebraic matrix equations. The proposed methods reduce the computation time remarkably. Finally a numerical example is illustrated to demonstrate the validity and applicability of the proposed methods.

  • Economic optimization of cumene manufacturing process to produce cumene from benzene and propylene was studied. The chosen objective function was the operational profit per year that subtracted capital cost, utility cost, and reactants cost from product revenue and other benefit. The number of design variables of the optimization are 6. Matlab connected to and controlled Unisim Design to calculate operational profit with the given design variables. As the first step of the optimization, design variable points was sampled and operational profit was calculated by using Unisim Design. By using the sampled data, the estimation model to calculate the operational profit was constructed, and the optimization was performed on the estimation model. This study compared second order polynomial and support vector regression as the estimation method. As the sampling method, central composite design was compared with Hammersley sequence sampling. The optimization results showed that support vector regression and Hammersley sequence sampling were superior than second order polynomial and central composite design, respectively. The optimized operational profit was 17.96 MM$ per year, which was 12% higher than 16.04 MM$ of base case.

  • Reliability is the priority matter in guided weapon systems. The reliability prediction data is used during the devel opment stage as the manufacturing cost is very high and the production quantity if quite limited. At the same time it takes relatively a long period of time to acquire a reliable operation data set after deployment such that in order t o determine the operational reliability, weapons must be tested and analyzed in real operating environments. For the research, the life distributions were estimated by using actual operation data and the reliability was calculated by ap plying the method of least squares and maximum likelihood estimation. Also, the comparisons were made between pr edicted reliability and actual operational reliability. As a result, the actual reliability of each system was higher than predicted reliability and it was considered that such a difference was caused by the fact that the application of the l atest designing technology and improved parts to the guided weapon systems was not reflected on the estimation of predicted reliability. It was possible to confirm the actual operational reliability of domestic (ROK) guided weapon sy stems through this research and the methods used here will contribute to the reliability analyses for the future guide d weapon systems to be developed.

  • The market of the municipal wasetewater treatment plant (MWTP) operation is expanding across the world including Korea. The contracting-out system was introduced for the effective operation of MWTPs. However, an improvement of the contracting-out system of MWTP has been continuously required. This research investigated current operational status of MWTPs in Korea, to suggest the improvement of the cost effective MWTP operation to promote the contracting-out system of MWTP operation. Results showed that lower operational costs of MWTP were lower in larger MWTPs than in smaller MWTPs. Overall, MWTPs operated by a public enterprise showed lower operational costs than those operated by government agencies and private enterprises. Among the MWTPs similar in their treatment capacity, treatment process and operation period, MWTPs operated by private enterprises showed the lowest operational cost. According to the survey, managers and operators of MWTPs emphasized the importance of improvement on the methods of selecting operating agencies and estimating operationing costs. The results of this study should be useful as important supporting data to promote the contracting-out system for the MWTP operation.

  • Purpose - After Korea's Free Economic Zone (FEZ) system was launched in 2003, there have been many debates about upgrading it and its support systems. However, as of 2013, there were insufficient results. Further, upon the designation of the East Coast and Chungbuk as official FEZs from February 4, 2013 by the 56th the Commission, there is a concern that many people are in the area designated as FEZ 8. This study investigates Korea's new FEZ system as part of Korea's primary new economic development policy in the 21st century. Therefore, this study examines views on the weaknesses of the past ten years of FEZs so that Korea can expand its FEZ system. Research design, data, and methodology -Many countries have considered the FEZ as an economic special zone. By reviewing previous research models, this study provides an update using recent data and materials, until 2013, from the Center of Free Economic Zones. In previous studies, the lack of support systems was attributed to proposals to ensure operational autonomy and differentiation of each FEZ; however, the main cause cannot be solved through regulatory issues, as difficulties caused by the operational system are responsible for the problems. We wish to analyze the FEZ, specifically the operational system; this is the main issue of this study. Results - After the first FEZs were established, it became necessary to have basic plans, as investment results in 2013 compared to the same period this year led to lower earnings in the first half of 2014. We propose an improvement of the operational system because in the free economic zones, the operational system is the root cause of the underlying problem. The results of this research are as follows. The weak management of the FEZ system is influenced by weak investment, delayed development, foreigners' living facilities, benefits of foreign investments, the control tower's policy making decision process, quickness of the process of satisfying legal requirements, and support For the independence of FEZs. Conclusion - Local governments do not have legal rights over FEZ deregulation and investment industries. This study suggests that the local government should have more independence from the central government. Moreover, independent management committees are more effective for ensuring public rights, better employee responsibilities, and better-qualified personnel. The FEZ committee struggles to effectively manage the locations of FEZs, foreign investments, and related facilities under the control of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy. Thus, the FEZ committee should be under either the Prime Minister's office or the Presidential committee, to control and effectively coordinate between the local and central governments. If the problem clearly applies to the operational system in 2013, it is necessary to provide materials and methods so that the results of the first half of 2014 can be computed despite the data limits and lack of resources, and the data can be analyzed in a more diachronic thesis.

  • Currently, there are two types of trainer in Korea : basic and advanced. Both models have been in operation for more than 10 years, and compared to the early stage of operation, reliability has gradually improved and failure rates have also entered a trend of stabilization. Therefore, it is necessary to extend the maintenance period considering economic feasibility. This study investigates the three maintenance period calculation methods: NAVAIR 00-25-403 [17], DOD, U.S. [4], CERL and US Army [3], with intention to extend the maintenance period of the trainer from current 200 hours to 400 hours. In addition, the maintenance period was calculated by the three methods with actual operational data. Common standards and procedures were established to apply operational data to the existing maintenance period calculation methods, the required reliability indicators were derived, and the maintenance periods was calculated based on the results, additionally, a review on the field applicability of the three maintenance cycles was conducted. An on-site interviews were conducted with the calculation results, and 11 out of the 15 items were expected to be extended by 400 hours. It was suggested that the remaining 4 items could be extended to 400 hours by supplementing the inspection method through additional analysis such as functional analysis, inspection content verification, and site connection.

  • Traffic signal control methods are suggested to improve the operational effectiveness of COSMOS system in Seoul. First. a method that improves progression of the corridor traffic flow within a common sub-area was explored. Applying this method, both frequency and magnitude of offset transition were reduced as compared to the existing method. In addition, the level of connection among neighboring corridors increased by applying the method, thus the qualify of progression was also improved. Second, a practical guideline on signal phase design was proposed to improve the efficiency of actuated operations for the left-turn movement. Last, a method for estimating optimal queue length parameters was surveyed and evaluated. An evaluation study was performed for the suggested methods through both field and simulation studies. Results showed that the proposed methods gave better performance than the existing methods. It is expected that the use of proposed methods can improve operational performance of COSMOS.

  • The flight test operational procedure artifact includes mission planning, execution methods, and safety measures for each step of test progress. As the development of guided missiles has become more advanced and strategic, flight test has become increasingly complex and broadened. Therefore, increased reliability of the flight test operation procedures was required to ensure test safety. Particularly, the design of the flight test operational procedures required verification through M&S to predict and prepare for the uncertainty in a new test. The relevant studies have published the optimal framework development for flight tests and the model-based improvements of flight test processes, but they lacked the specificity to be applied directly to the flight test operational procedures. In addition, the flight test operational procedures, which consist of document bases, have caused problems such as limitations of analysis capabilities, insensitive expressions, and lack of scalability for the behavior and performance analysis of test resources. To improve these problems, this paper proposes how to design operational procedure of guided missile flight test system by applying MBSE(Model-based Systems Engineering). This research has improved reliability by increasing the ability to analyze the behavior and performance of test resources, and increased efficiency with the scalability applicable to multiple flight tests. That can be also used continuously for the guided missile flight tests that will be developed in the future.
