  • Arresters are the best protective device on electrical power systems against transient overvoltages generated by lightning and/or switching operation. Nonetheless, arresters will be deteriorated due to absorption of moisture in the environments of its use, repetition in the protective operation to overvoltages, and some defects at manufacturing. It is therefore important to estimate the electrical characteristic changes of ZnO blocks. In this paper, an accelerated deterioration test by a standard lightning impulse current was carried out to extract parameters needed for diagnosing arrester deterioration, and leakage current components were measured. Total energy applied to the ZnO blocks at each time is 1,050[J] in 8/20[${\mu}s$] impulse current. From the experimental results, we proposed electrical parameters and leakage current level to diagnose arrester soundness.

  • Inchon Port is the second largest import-export port of Korea, and has the point at issue such as the excessive logistics cost because of the limits of handling capacity and the chronic demurrage. There are few research activities on the analysis and improvement of the whole port operation, because Inchon Port not only has the dual dock system and various facilities but also handles a various kind of cargo. The purpose of this paper is to develop the simulation program as a long-term strategic support tool, considering the dual dock system and the TU(Terminal Operation Company) system executed since March, 1997 in Inchon Port. The basic input parameters such as arrival intervals, cargo tons, service rates are analyzed and the probability density functions for these parameters are estimated. The main mechanism of simulation model is the discrete event-driven simulation and the next-event time advancing. The program is executed based on the knowledge base and database. From the simulation model, it is possible to estimate the demurrage status through analyzing various scenarios and to establish the long-term port strategic plan.

  • Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor(IPMSM) produces two kind of torque that Magnetic and Reluctance torque. The permanent magnet linkage flux Ψa and d-axis and q-axis inductance have an important influence on the torque characteristic of IPMSM. Thus their accurate prediction is essential for predicting performance aspect such as the torque and flux-weakening capabilities. In this paper, we compared the characteristic parameters and operation region of two type IPMSM which has different pole numbers.

  • Field orientation of rotating field machines is influenced by various machine parameters. Most unpleasant are those parameters which vary during machine operation, such as the stator and rotor resistances. Permanent influences of resistance variation in steady state operation could have serious consequences. Also transitory influences are often disturbing. In this paper a control method for a current-fed synchronous machine is presented in which both permanent and transitory parameter influences are suppressed as much as possible.

  • Compact and small size, reliable and failsafe operation and low cost featuring fault current limiter causing the designer to take a close look into the use of passive fault current limiter(FCL) for the protection of power semiconductor devices in power electronic systems. This paper has identified the main parameters responsible for the development of ideal passive magnetic current limiter. The effect of those parameters on the range of operation and the voltage-current characteristics of the magnetic current limiter has been studied using tableau approach. Desirable characteristics are discussed and the simulation results are presented.

  • An estimation method for the characteristic parameters in the low frequency signal is proposed in this paper. A low frequency signal is assumed to be modulated or distorted by high frequency terms. The algorithm proposed in this paper is designed to select set of local maximums in a successive manner, hence it is denoted as the iterative peak picking(IPP) algorithm. The IPP algorithm is operating in the time domain and is using only the comparison operation between two neighboring samples. Therefore, its computational complexity is very low and the delay caused by the computation is negligible, which make the real-time operation possible with economic hardware. The proposed algorithm is verified on the pitch estimation of speech signal and blood pulse estimation.

  • A cylindrical type of self-controlled restrictor is designed for hydrostatic bearing of crank shaft for a grinding wheel spindle. The effect of operation parameters, clearance between spindle and housing on bearing stiffness are analyzed to determine the optimum conditions of operation parameters. The lowest values of the supply pressure and the loads by the theoretical and experimental results assuming oil film thickness and shape of pocket are compared.

  • Helicon sources are attractive for plasma processing because they provide high plasma density in low magnetic fields. Helicon waves were excited by a Nagoya type III antenna in a magnetized plasma column. Plasma parameters were measured with a double probe, and the structure and adsorption of the helicon wave fields were determined with the probes. Argon is fed through a MFC (mass flow controller) for operation pressure of 10~110 mtorr. A 13.56 MHz r.f. power of 50~450 W is induced through the antenna. The plasma density and electron temperature are measured as functions of external magnetic field, r.f. power and pressure. The plasma density as functions of r.f. power and magnetic field at a constant pressure increased linearly, and the electron temperature did not change largely with various operation parameters and the value was around 5~7 eV.

  • In the interest of nuclear power plant safety, a self-diagnostic monitoring system (SDMS) is needed to monitor defects in safety-related components. An air-operated valve (AOV) is one of the components to be monitored since the failure of its operation could potentially have catastrophic consequences. In this paper, a model of the AOV is developed with the parameters that affect the operational characteristics. The model is useful for both understanding the operation and correlating parameters and defects. Various defects are introduced in the experiments to construct a fault library, which will be used in a pattern recognition approach. Finally, the validity of the fault library is examined.

  • It is the goal of this study to provide the essential data for design and operation of optimum water supply system. Experimental and theoretical analyses have been conducted for various parameters, for example, volume and air percent of pressurizing tank, pump speed and pressure range inside tank, etc. Pressure inside tank with time, flow rate, energy consumption rate and pump operation time have been obtained for design and operating parameters to optimize the components and to establish the operating method of system, and therefore to contribute to the development of technology from a point of view of the improvement of quality, the enhancement of system efficiency and the reduction of construction cost.
