For the purpose of clarifying the influence of welding residual stress to the fatigue crack propagations behaviour, an analytical investigation based on finite element method is performed to examine the opening behaviour of tip-closed crack in the compressive residual stress. A finite element model comprised of contact elements for the crack plane and plane stress elements for the base material is used to evaluate crack opening stress of the crack existing in the residual stress field. Also an analytical method based on the superposition principle to estimate the length of opened part of tip closed crack and the stress distribution adjacent to the crack during uploading is applied to the finite element model. The software for the analysis is ABAQUS, which is a general purpose finite element package. The results show that stresses distributed on the crack surfaces are reduced and approached to zero as the applied stresses are increased up to crack tip opening stress and no mechanical discontinuity is found at the boundary of contact elements and plane stress elements. It is verified that the opening behavior of the fatigue crack in the residual stress can be predicted by finite element method with the proposed analytical method.
A practical approach of calculating the ultimate strength of composite beams with unreinforced web opening is proposed. In this method, the slab shear contribution at the opening is calculated as the smaller of the shear strength of the slab and the pullout capacity of the shear connectors at the high moment end. A simple interaction equation is used to predict the ultimate strength under simultaneous bending moment and shear force. Strength prediction by the proposed method is compared with previous test results and the predictions by other analytical method. The comparison shows that the proposed method predicts the ultimate capacity with resonable accuracy.
Opening size of 3 types of geotextile were tested using dry and wet sieving methods to evaluate characteristics of test methods and to compare the test results. Judging from test results, dry sieving method is a poor test, having many problems causing many errors but a simple-quick test. Wet sieving method is a very specific test avoiding many of the problems of dry sieving such as electrostatic charges, trapping in the geotextiles and so on. However, one of wet sieving tests, KSK ISO12956, takes long time to complete a test and is too strict to handle loss of granular material. Generally, opening size of a geotextile by wet sieving test is smaller than that of dry sieving test. Especially, opening size by KSF 2126 which is one of wet sieving test but disused at present anymore is similar or smaller than that by KSK ISO12956 method.
This paper proposes an effective assistant model for considering the stator slot-opening effect on air gap flux density distribution in conventional interior-type permanent magnet (IPM) motor. Different from the conventional slot-opening effect analysis in surface-type PM (SPM) motor, a composite effect of slot-opening uniquely existing in IPM motor, which additionally causes enhancement of air gap flux density due to magnet flux path distortion in iron core between the buried PM and rotor surface. This phenomenon is represented by a proposed assistant model, which simply deals with this additional effect by modifying magnetic pole-arc using an effective method. The validity of this proposed analytical model is applied to predict the air gap flux density distribution in an IPM motor model and confirmed by finite element method (FEM).
In this paper, the variation of air-gap field intensity caused by the slot-opening in interior permanent magnet (IPM) motor is investigated, which is for predicting the instantaneous magnetic field more preciously in analytical method further. It is different with the approach of dealing the slot-opening effect on the air-gap field distribution with the "relative permeance" function in surface permanent magnet (SPM) motor. The prediction of the air-gap field in IPM motor is much more complex than SPM motor. In this study, an approximate estimation method is adopted based on analyzing the changing of flux path in both the IPM rotor part and stator part, and in additional an analytical function defined as "relative pole-arc" is built. The finite element method(FEM) is used for confirming the slot-opening effect on the field prediction.
This paper has the object of investigating natural frequencies of opening thick plates on Pasternak foundation by means of finite element method and providing Kinematic design data for mat of building structures. Vibration analysis that opening plate subjected to In-plane stress is presented in this paper. Finite element analysis of rectangular opening plate is done by use of rectangular finite element with 8-nodes. In order to analysis plate which is supported on Pasternak foundation, the Winkler foundation parameter is varied with 0, 10, 102, 103 and the shear foundation parameter is 0, 5, 10, 15. The ratio of In-plane force to critical load is applied as 0.2, 0.8, respectively. This paper analyzed varying opening Position and opening size.
The fatigue crack opening behavior is analyzed using finite element method. Because extremely fine mesh subdivision is required when using constant stress constant strain triangular element, this study uses conventional two dimensional eight node isoparametric elements. Since plasitc zone size is similar to crack propagating length per each load cycle because of relatively large element size, a new analysis model that a crack propagates every two load cycle is suggested. the opening load and crack opening displacement can be obtained accurately by this method.
The paper aims at analyzing the stress distribution around an underground opening that is subjected to non-symmetrical surface loading with emphasis on opening shapes with sharp corners and the stress concentrations developed at these locations. The analysis is performed utilizing the BIE method coupled with the Neumann's series. In order to implement this approach, the special recurrent relations for half plane were proven and the modified Shanks transform was incorporated to accelerate the series convergence. To demonstrate the capability of the developed approach, a horseshoe shape opening with sharp corners was investigated and the location and magnitude of the maximum hoop stress was calculated. The dependence of the maximum hoop stress location on the parameters of the surface loading (degree of asymmetry, size of loaded area) and of the opening (the opening height) was studied. It was found that the absolute magnitude of the maximum hoop stress (for all possible surface loading locations) is developed at the roof points when the opening height/width ratio is relatively large or when the pressure loading area is relatively narrow (compared to the roof arch radius), and contrarily, when the opening height/width ratio is relatively small or when the surface pressure is applied to a relatively wide area, the absolute magnitude of the maximum hoop stress is developed at the bottom sharp corner points.
Making a transverse opening in concrete beams in order to accommodate utility services through the member instead of below or above of that, sometimes may be necessary. It is obvious that inclusions of an opening in a beam decreases its flexural and shear strengths. Fabricated steel bars are usually used to increase the capacity of the opening section, but details of reinforcements around the opening are dense and complex resulting in laborious pouring and setup process. The goal of this study was to investigate the possibility of using steel fibers in concrete mixture instead of complex reinforcement detailing order to strengthen opening section. Nonlinear finite element method was employed to investigate the behavior of steel fiber reinforced concrete beams. The numerical models were validated by comparison with experimental measurements tested by other investigators and then used to study the influence of fiber length, fiber aspect ratio and fiber content on the shear performance of SFRC slender beams with opening. Finally, it was concluded that the predicted shear strength enhancement is considerably influenced by use of steel fibers in concrete mixture but the effect of fiber length and fiber aspect ratio wasn't significant.
Background: Although magnetic resonance imaging is accurate, it is expensive to measure the movement of temporomandibular joint. The three-dimensional (3D) motion analysis system is an inexpensive measurement tool. Objects: This study examined the reliability of quantifying the mouth opening and lateral mandibular shift and differences between individuals with and without temporomandibular disorder (TMD) using the hygienic method of surface markers on the skin with 3D ultrasound-based motion analysis. Methods: This study included 24 subjects (12 with and 12 without TMD). Temporomandibular joint motion during mouth opening was recorded using two surface markers with 3D ultrasound-based motion analysis. An intraclass correlation coefficient [ICC (3,k)] was used to confirm the intrarater reliability of quantifying kinematic temporomandibular joint motion, and an independent t-test was used to evaluate differences in maximal mouth opening and lateral mandibular shift between the two groups. Results: Assessment of mouth opening and lateral mandibular shift showed excellent test-retest reliability with low standard error of measurement. The lateral mandibular shift and opening-lateral mandibular shift ratio were significantly increased in the TMD group during maximum mouth opening (p<.05). However, no significant difference in maximal mouth opening was observed between the groups with and without TMD (p>.05). Conclusion: This hygienic and simple surface marker method can be used to quantify the mouth opening and lateral mandibular shift at the end-range of mouth opening. The TMD group showed an increased lateral mandibular shift movement at the end-range of mouth opening. The lateral mandibular shift movement can be regarded as a symptom in the diagnosis and treatment of TMD.
