Model tests in calibration chamber with open -ended steel pipe pile have been performed in sand deposit to clarify effect of soil plug on bearing capacity, load transfer mechanisms in soil plug, and behavior of soil plug under dynamic and static conditions. Model piles were devised so that bearing capacity of open -ended pile could be measured separately into outside skin friction, inside skin friction due to soil plug -pile interaction and end bearing force on the section of steel pipe pile. It may be concluded, form the test results, that the plugging level of open -ended pile is more correctily defined by specific recovery ratio, y, rather than by plug length ratio, PLR, and the major part of inside skin friction is generated within the range of three times as long as the inner diameter of the pile from the pile tip. The ratio of inside skin friction to total bearing capacity is much larger than that of outside skin friction to total bearing capacity. Therefore, the bearing capacity of pile could not be well predicted, unless the inside skin friction is properly taken into account.

In this paper, a non-contact microwave technique was presented to detect the surface crack of the metals. An open-ended coaxial cable line was used as a sensor at 11 GHz, and the reflection coefficients were measured by scanning along the metal surface including artificial surface cracks. A parameter, the K value which was defined as the difference between maximum and minimum reflection coefficients, was measured and used to estimate the crack depth. A linear relationship between the K value and crack depth was found. This study showed that non-contact detection of the surface cracks of metals is possible using the open-ended coaxial line sensor at X-band.
Model pile teats, using large calibration chamber in which the stress state and the relative density can be controlled, were performed in order to study on the effect of soil condition on the behavior of open-ended steel pipe pile. The model pipe pile was made up of two pipes to separately measure each component of bearing capacity of open -ended steel pipe pile. According to the tests results, pile plugging and driving resistance of the pile installed in sand were primarily dependent on the horizontal stress and the relative density. Plug bearing capacity, outside skin fricition and total bearing capacity were also mainly dependent on the horizontal stress and relative density. Moreover, the ratio of the horizontal stress acting on the outside wall of open -ended pipe pile after installation to the original horizontal stress was not nearly affected by original value of horizontal stress. It is bigger than one in the case of dense deposit, equal to one for medium deposit, and smaller than one for very loose deposit. It seems to be mainly dependent on the relative density for a given soil.

This research was done to gain the health information in one of the target areas(rural area) of the Korea University Community Health Project, and to improve and standardize the methodology of the health interview survey. There were two types of questions;one was the simple open-ended question and the other was check list in the interview survey for a total of 1,406 inhabitants. And so the result obtained from the above survey was analysed. The results as follows; 1) The morbidity rate in general was 11.2% by simple open-ended question and 32.5% by check list during recent 20 days in interview method. 2) Women had higher morbidity rate in both kinds of method. 3) The most prevalent diseases in the interview method using check list were the ones of the musculo-skeletal system and connective tissue (22.5%), and diseases of the respiratory system (19.8%) and digestive system (13.7%) were in order of frequency. 4) By the position in the family, housewives had highest morbidity rate in the interview method unrespectedly, and the reason seemed that the respondents were houseweives themselves and the morbidity rate was the one by spell not by person. But morbidity rate by the socio-economic status had no significant difference in both methods. 5) The agreement rate on simple open-ended question and check list was 72.5%, but if limiting respondents themselves only, the rate was falled to 54%. 6) The morbidities were diverse in the review of the results of previous morbidity surveies, but the morbidity rate was higher and less variable in case of using check list and getting the replies individually than using simple open-ended question and proxy respondents.

It will become more and more popular to use the long-term care facilities and home health care services with the chronic disease increasing. It depends on how much the consumers would pay and purchase the services. They might get more benefits from that kind of services than from ordinary hospitalization. So far, the study of determining the medical service price has focused most often on the efforts from the providers' view. But it must be reasonable to include the consumers' value for the service. This study was performed to assess WTP(Willingness to Pay) for home health care service in order to apply to the determination of nursing price in a reasonable manner. In this study, respondents were asked if they would pay for the service's intangible benefits under the four different types(open-ended minimum WTP, open-ended maximum WTP, bidding WTP, referendum WTP). The contingent valuation method is a potentially useful tool in understanding how people value the benefits of the service. As a result, average open-ended minimum WTP was W16,015 per day among 65 respondents. Average open-ended maximum WTP was W29,154 per day among 65 respondents. Average bidding WTP was W26,300 per day among 65 respondents. Average referendum WTP was W22,200 per day among 70 respondents. The results of regression analyses were also consistent with theoretical prediction, e.g., increasing WTP with consumers' value for the service, state of patients, and household income. This study demonstrated that it was more reasonable to consider the consumers' value in determining the services' price. In addition, a further study is needed to test the validity of this CV method and to determine a proper nursing price based on the consumers' view.

In this paper, we propose an equivalent model of array antennas that use open-ended waveguides for effective EM simulation. We first investigate an individual element that consists of an open-ended waveguide and square ground plane. The waveguide length, aperture size, and ground size of the individual element are adjusted to give a similar radiation pattern to that of the individual element of the original antenna. We then apply the designed equivalent model to two different types of array antennas, such as a microstrip patch array and a waveguide array antenna. Comparison of the simulation results using the equivalent model with the results obtained with the original antenna reveals a difference in gain of less than 0.2 dB and a difference in half power beam width(HPBW) of less than $1^{\circ}$. The designed equivalent model is then mounted on a simple aircraft, and the simulation results are again compared to results from the original antenna. We find a 60 % reduction in simulation resources and time when compared with the original antenna model.
A specially designed model open -ended pile, which was composed of inner tube and outer tube, wry driven in the pressure chamber by two diffenent intallation methods, that is, impact -driving and vibratory driving, and static compression loading test was done for that pile. Through the measurement of bearing capacities in the separated resisting parts of open -ended pile, bearing mechanism of open-ended pile and soil plugging behaviors for different installation methods were studied. It appears that 20% out of soil plugging force of impact -driven pile was developed during driving, while the rest was developed during static compression loading and t.he magnitude of confining pressure applied to the chamber did not affect soil plugging behavior. Also. it appears that, soil plugging force of vibratory pile was not developed during driving, while it was developed weakly as about 0.5~0.7 times as that of impact pile during static compression loading. and the confining pressure of pressure rhamber had an effect on the soil plugging. In the ultimate loading condition unit soil plugging force did not approach to the failure condition.

Factors which affect the capacity and the soil plug condition of an open-ended pile can be broadly divided into three categories:i.e., pile conditions, soil conditions and penetration methods. It has been found that the relative density and the horizontal stress have much effects on the soil plug behavior than other soil conditions. Also, it has been found that the pile diameter is the most important factor among pile conditions. However, a few investigations have been performed to account for both soil conditions and pile conditions. In this paper, a number of calibration chamber tests have been conducted with three different sized open-ended model piles. The model pile was driven into siliceous sand, with varying soil conditions, to clarify coupled effects of pile diameter and soil conditions on the plug behavior, the capacity, and the load trasfer mechanixm of soil plug. The model piles are composed of two stainless steel pipes so as to measure the plug capacity, the tip resistance, and the outside skin friction. separately.

In this paper we develop a method to observe faults in semiconductor devices and transmission lines by calculating the variation of the reflection function in a dielectric microstrip line that has an open-ended termination containing an optically induced plasma region. It is analyzed with the assumption that the plasma is distributed homogeneously in laser illumination. With the non linear material of degradation, the concentration of the carrier in the part of the material has changed. Since the input wave has produced the phenomenon of reflection, the input signal to the open-ended microstrip lines can be observed on reflection to identify the location of the fault. The characteristic impedances resulting from the presence of plasma are evaluated by the transmission line model. The variation of the reflection wave in the microwave system has been calculated by using an equivalent circuit model. The transient response has been also evaluated theoretically for changing the phase of the variation in the reflection. The variation of characteristic response in differentially localized has been also evaluated analytically.

A microstrip feedline based open ended folded-slot antenna is proposed for ultra-wideband (UWB) applications. The prototype of the proposed antenna is fabricated on the FR4 dielectric substrate. The proposed antenna has a wide n-shaped slot that is useful for designing circuit components on the same printed circuit board (PCB) as that of the radio frequency (RF) modules. The proposed antenna use two kinds of slots as radiators, and each slots have different characteristics because of the different type of ends of the slot. The wideband characteristic can be obtained by resonances of each slot which are occurred at different frequencies. The measured impedance bandwidth (S11≤ -10 dB) is 2.9-11.56 GHz, and the antenna peak gain is 2-4 dBi over the UWB range. The antenna has a stable omni-directional radiation pattern and only a small group-delay variation across the UWB passband. In addition, we present a modified design with band-notched characteristics of a 5 GHz wireless local area network (WLAN) frequency band.
