  • In this paper, an open architecture control system for automatic container cranes is investigated. A standard reference model for cranes, which consists of three modules; hardware module, operating system module, and application software module, is proposed. A hybrid control architecture combining deliberative and reactive controls for the autonomous operation of the cranes is proposed. The main contributions of this paper are as follows: First, a new reference platform for the crane control system is proposed. Second, by analyzing the structure of a container crane, implementation strategies for the automatic container crane are described.

  • In the manufacturing industries, agility and flexibility are the key issues to meet the various market demands. From this point of view, open architecture control has many advantages. This paper suggests a real-time Linux-based open architecture controller. Linux-based and windows-based controllers are compared in several aspects, and Linux is shown to be advantageous over the windows. With the user friendly GUI, the suggested controller is applied to the X-Y stage which is made of two linear motors. Path following and repeatability performances are successfully observed, which shows the validity of the suggested controller.

  • This study aims at developing the high speed/intelligent machining system suing the plug/play method of an open architecture controller. The plug/play technology by the Application Specific Function (ASF), can readily implement the open architecture controller into various machining system or other automatic equipments. For the open architecture controller, this study developed the open HMI, screen editor, ASF, visual builder, and controller OS technology as software components. On the other hand, we developed the I/O module and main board as control hardware system. This study, as an example, presents integration of individual component technologies for the plug/play type open architecture CNC system.

  • Using magnetorheological (MR) dampers in multiswitch open-loop control mode has been shown to be cost-effective for cable vibration mitigation. In this paper, a method for analyzing the damping performance of taut cables incorporating MR dampers in open-loop control mode is developed considering the effects of damping coefficient, damper stiffness, damper mass, and stiffness of the damper support. Making use of a three-element model of MR dampers and complex modal analysis, both numerical and asymptotic solutions are obtained. An analytical expression is obtained from the asymptotic solution to evaluate the equivalent damping ratio of the cable-damper system in the open-loop control mode. The individual and combined effects of the damping coefficient, damper stiffness, damper mass and stiffness of damper support on vibration control effectiveness are investigated in detail. The main thrust of the present study is to derive a general formula explicitly relating the normalized system damping ratio and the normalized damper parameters in consideration of all concerned effects, which can be easily used for the design of MR dampers to achieve optimal open-loop vibration control of taut cables.

  • The construction industry consists of various and massive architectural information as an architectural process includes a variety of design stages with cooperation of many disciplines. Particularly, architectural information is generated and managed through the life cycle of a building, from conceptual design stage to the construction and maintenance. A Building Information Model (BIM) serves as a shared knowledge resource for information about a facility forming a reliable basis for decisions during its life-cycle from inception onward. BIM technology accomplished quantitative development being utilized in various disciplines. However, it is necessary to develop environment and requirement for qualitative improvement of BIM based project. Particularly, requirement is very important for architectural design evaluations. The purpose of this study is to develop and apply of quality control requirement for improving the quality of architectural design in open BIM environments. To achieve this purpose, the authors have investigated case study for open BIM data quality control (software, guideline and application case) and classified quality control targets according to physical/logical quality and data quality. In addition, the authors have defined open BIM based quality control process and developed quality control requirements. Finally, the authors have developed rule based quality check system using requirements for efficient quality control based on open BIM.

  • This paper deals with the design and implementation of an open architecture CNC system for Wire-EDM, with a consideration of the difference between Wire-EDM and NC cutting machines. Recent open architecture controller(OAC) related research results could be applied to directly access Wire-EDM systems at the CNC level. However, previous research about OAC is mostly aimed at NC cutting machines such as milling or lathes, and hence these results are inadequate to apply to Wire-EDM. To close the gap between previous general research on OAC and Wire-EDM specific needs, an open architecture NC model for Wire-EDM composed of a synchronization kernel and a NC functional module is proposed. Based on the control information flow and Wire-EDM specific machining process, the conceptual CNC model and the detailed implementation model for Wire-EDM is suggested.

  • Coordinate measuring machines(CMMs) are used to obtain the dimensional information with micron accuracy. This paper is concerned with the development of the horizontal arm type coordinate measuring machine using open architecture controller. The coordinate measuring machine considered in this paper consists of three orthogonal axes in the x, y and z directions. Open architecture controller IS used to implement a measuring system which can be fulfill to various needs of endusers of coordinate measuring machines. The open architecture controller presented here is embodied in personal computers. The programs and man-machine interfaces(MM1) are developed for various measuring conditions. Through the computer simulation based on the mathematical models of the coordinate measuring machine, control parameters are optimally tuned.

  • This paper proposed a web-based open architecture monitoring system using the Java language. The proposed system can be implemented in any platform and the status of the process can be monitored in a remote station. The proposed scheme have been applied to a steam generator level controller for a nuclear power plant. The result shows the feasibility of the proposed system.
