Effect of Plug Cell Size and Variety on the Production of Onion Set for Pickle (플러그 셀 크기와 품종이 절임용 양파 자구 생산에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was conducted to improve year round production of onion sets for pickles and increase their yield by using different cell sizes of plug trays. 'Josaeng sseondeobol' and 'Daeji' were seeded in 105-cell tray, 128-cell tray, and 162-cell tray on March 27, 2010. 'Josaeng sseondeobol' showed the maximum number of leaves on May 23, but 'Daeji' showed the maximum in late June. Bulbing of 'Josaeng sseondeobol' was already initiated on May 23, but 'Daeji' was initiated on June 6. Growth of both varieties was better in 105-cell tray than the others. There wasn't a difference in bulbing between two varieties by the number of cells, but bulb size was larger in the low number of cells than high ones. 'Josaeng sseondeobol' was all harvested in July, but more than 50% of 'Daeji' was harvested in August. The result of this study is as follows. Harvest time was delayed as the number of cells is increasing. There was a wide range of small onion sets distribution in both varieties as the number of cells is increasing.

Effects of Side-furrow-treated Carbofuran (3G) on the Control of Onion Maggots (Hylemyia antiqua Meigen; Anthomyiidae) and on the Growth Response of Garlics (Carbofuran (3G) 조춘토중처리에 의한 고자리파리의 방제 및 마늘의 생육촉진반응)

  • In field studies, the insecticides carbofuran(Furadan 3G) and diazion(3G) at the rate of 1,8 kg a.i./ha as a single side-furrowing treatment from March 13 to April 10(7 to 10 days intervals) were evaluated in terms of the control effects to the onion maggots(Hylemyia antique Meigen) and some phytotonic effects to the garlic plants. The treatments with carbofuran were significantly more effective in onion maggot control than the treatment with diazinon and untreated, and the earlier treatments the better control effects were obtained. Phytotonic effects only with carbofuran on garlic plants were of served as increases ranged $16.5\~23.2\%$ in plant heights, $22.0\~32.0\%$ in stem diameters and $15.5\~22.8\%$ in bulb diameters compared to the untreated. The greatest yield of garlics was resulted in the plots of Match-13 treatments with carbofuran, ca. 10,700kg/ha in the carbofuran treatment, ca. 5637kg/ha in the diazinon treatment and ca. 4728kg/ha in the untreated plots. The magnitude of yield increase of garlics in the plots treated with carbofuran was attributable to positively stimulate the growth response of garlic plants as well as the control effects to onion maggots.

Effect of Biodegradable Film Mulching on Soil Environment and Onion Growth and Yield (생분해성 멀칭필름이 토양환경과 양파 생육 및 수량에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was compared the soil environment and growth and yield of onion (Allium cepa L.) treated with non-mulching (NM) and mulching polyethylene film (PEF) and two biodegradable films (BFI and BFII) commonly used in farmhouses. Visual observation confirmed the degradation of BFI and BFII films after 150 days after tansplanting (DAT). BFII increased light penetration into the films and reduced the weight maintenace after 180 DAT, with a high decompostion at 30 days after soil tilling. Soil moisture contents much fluctuated between -14 kP and - 0 kPa in NM plots, increasing the minimum soil temperature of BFI plots. Mulching treatments decreased soil organic matter contents but did not subtantially increase soil mineral nutrients, soil bulk density, and number of bacteria compared to those of NM plots. Onion root growth was increased by PEF and BFI treatments at an early growth stage, 60 DAT, with the most remarkable stem extension observed for PEF and BFI treatments after 150 DAT. PEF and BFI treatments increased the bulb's diameter, length, weight, and lodging at 180 DAT. BFI treatments exhibited a high portion of the "very large" category producing with 55.3 tons ha-1 based on the classification into bulb size, followed by PE (49.3 tons), NM (9.4 tons), and BFII treatments (2.7 tons) at 230 DAT.

Effect of Different Day Length on the Production of Onion (Allium cepa L.) Set (양파 자구생산에 미치는 일장처리 효과)

  • This study was conducted to develop the most effective method in promoting onion set in cultivars 'Josaengsseondebol' and 'Daeji' for all year-round production. This was done by extending the day length for 41 days. For both cultivars, the period to reach the maximum number of leaves developed was shortened as the exposure to day length increased. Between the two cultivars, 'Josaengsseondebol' reaches its maximum leaf formation for a shorter duration compared with 'Daeji'. In effect to bulb size, cultivar 'Josaengsseondebol' having a night break of 1, 2, and 16 hours light condition had better bulb enlargement compared with the non-treated bulbs. In the case of cultivar 'Daeji', only bulbs exposed to a night break of 2 and 16 hours light condition had better bulb enlargement. The percentage of marketable set yield in cultivar 'Josaengsseondebol' having a night break of 1 hr, 2 hrs, 16 hrs light condition, and control or untreated bulbs were 84%, 92%, 90%, and 6% respectively. In the case of cultivar 'Daeji', treated with a night break of 1 hr, 2 hrs, 16 hrs light condition, and untreated bulbs had a percentage marketable set yield of 7%, 55%, 64%, and 0% respectively. Based on these results, it is therefore concluded that night break treatment is considered to be effective method in promoting off-season onion set cultivation in cultivar 'Josaengsseondebol'.

Growth and Bulb Characteristics of Extremely Early-Maturing Onion by Air Temperature Variation at Different Altitudes (해발고도별 기온변화에 따른 극조생 양파의 생육 및 구특성)

  • A study was carried out to determine the influence of climatic environments on the growth characteristics and bulb quality of extremely early-maturing type onion grown at different altitudes, such as 60m, 200m, 350m and 700m above sea level (ASL). The mean air temperature during the growing season of extremely early-maturing type onion (October 18 to April 27) was $10.8^{\circ}C$, $9.6^{\circ}C$, $8.1^{\circ}C$ and $6.1^{\circ}C$ at 60m, 200m, 350m and 700m ASL. The mean air temperature during the bulb growth period (March 16 to April 14) was recorded $10.5^{\circ}C$, $9.4^{\circ}C$, $7.9^{\circ}C$ and $6.0^{\circ}C$ at 60m, 200m, 350m and 700 m ASL. Plant height, neck diameter, leaf number, leaf area, top fresh weight and top dry weight were significantly increased in growing of extremely early-maturing type onion at 60m ASL. Bulb/neck diameter ratio increased rapidly under the same temperature regime. The diameter and weight of the bulb were also the largest at 60m ASL during the bulb growth period (daily mean temperature of $12.5^{\circ}C$). At 60m ASL, there was the highest bulb size like a height, diameter and weight of bulb related directly on onion yield in the bulb growth period from March 16 to April 14. In contrast, yield and bulb quality were considerably decreased at 700m ASL during the bulb growth stage (daily mean temperature of $8.4^{\circ}C$). The quantity of extremely early-maturing type onion has gradually decreased as the daily average temperature drops below $12.5^{\circ}C$ during the bulb growth stage (March 16 to April 14). As a result, the lower temperature (daily mean temperature below $12.5^{\circ}C$) during the bulb growth stage significantly decreased the size and quantity of bulb in direction proportion.

Development on Crop Yield Forecasting Model for Major Vegetable Crops using Meteorological Information of Main Production Area (주산지 기상정보를 활용한 주요 채소작물의 단수 예측 모형 개발)

  • The importance of forecasting agricultural production is receiving attention while climate change is accelerating. This study suggested three types of crop yield forecasting model for major vegetable crops by using downscaled meteorological information of main production area on farmland level, which identified as limitation from previous studies. First, this study conducted correlation analysis with seven types of farm level downscaled meteorological informations and reported crop yield of main production area. After, we selected three types of meteorological factors which showed the highest relation with each crop species and regions. Parameters were deducted from meterological factor with high correlation but crop species number was neglected. After, crop yield of each crops was estimated by using the three suggested types of models. Chinese cabbage showed high accuracy in overall, while the accuracy of daikon and onion was quiet revised by neglecting the outlier. Chili and garlic showed differences by region, but Kyungbuk chili and Chungnam, Kyungsang garlic appeared significant accuracy. We also selected key meteorological factor of each crops which has the highest relation with crop yield. If the factor had significant relation with the quantity, it explains better about the variations of key meteorological factor. This study will contribute to establishing the methodology of future studies by estimating the crop yield of different species by using farmland meterological information and relatively simplify multiple linear regression models.

Oleoresin Content and Functional Properties of Fresh Onion by Microwave-Assisted Extraction (마이크로웨이브 추출공정에 의한 양파의 올레오레진 함량 및 기능적 특성)

  • Fresh onions were extracted by two methods of conventional extraction(CE) and microwave assisted extraction(MAE) under different extraction conditions. Onion extracts obtained by CE and MAE were examined in oleoresin yield and physiological activities. The optimal extraction time of MAE was about 5 minutes, whereas that of CE was 2 hours. Therefore extraction time was shortened drastically by MAE but there was no significance in oleolesin yield. The electron donating abilities also showed negligible difference between two extracts obtained by CE and MAE, and 45% level in CE and 50% level in MAE. The nitrite scavenging effect was diminished while pH was increasing, and showed a high elimination effect over 85% at pH 1.2. The tyrosinase inhibitory effect was 20% level in both CE and MAE when water was used and 40% level when ethyl alcohol was used. The angiotensin I converting enzyme inhibitory effect showed higher activity with 70% level in MAE than 60% level in CE. The pyruvic acid content was 6.8 and 6.4 moles per 1g of fresh onion by CE and MAE when water was used, and was 4.3 and 5.6 moles by CE and MAE when ethyl alcohol was used.

Monitoring on Extraction Yields and Functional Properties of Onion (Allium cepa) Extracts by Using Response Surface Methodology (반응표면분석을 이용한 양파의 추출효율 및 기능성에 대한 모니터링)

  • Extraction characteristics of onion (Allium cepa) and the functional properties of corresponding extracts were monitored by the response surface methodology (RSM). The maximum extraction yield of 44.02% was obtained under the specific extraction conditions, such as microwave power of 143.13 W, ethanol concentration of 61.77% and extraction time of 3.39 min. The maximum electron donating ability (EDA) was found as 45.85% at the conditions of 143.55 W microwave power, 27.52% ethanol concentration and 4.86 min extraction time. The maximum inhibitory effect on tyrosinase was 65.40% at 132.29 W, 36.47% and 7.62 min. The maximum superoxide dismutase (SOD)-like activity was 69.84% under the extraction conditions of 99.41 W, 8.47% and 7.13 min. Based on superimposition of four dimensional RSM with respect to extraction yield, electron donating ability and SOD-like activity obtained under the various extraction conditions, the optimum ranges of extraction conditions were found to be microwave power of 0$\sim$120 W, ethanol concentration of 70$\sim$80% and extraction time of 2$\sim$10 min.

Effect of Band Spot Fertilization for Reduction of Additional Application in Plastic Film Mulching Cultivation of Onion(Allium cepa L.) (양파 비닐피복 재배에서 추비 절감을 위한 토중시비 효과)

  • It is very important to improve fertilizer use efficiency for the saving of fertilizers and for environmental purposes as well. However, there was no effective ways for the fertilization in the mid of growth under the plastic film mulching cultivation so far. For this, a Band Spotty Fertilization (BSF) machine was developed recently. So, we tried to establish a low input fertilization technique using this BSF machine in the vinyl mulching cultivation of onion (Allium cepa L.). Fertilization efficiency, soil properties, and crop yield were examined and compared among treatments from 2000 to 2001. The content of exchangeable K in soils were higher after fertilization but that of available $P_2O_5$ was lower than before the experiment in all plots. The content of nitrate-N was highest at the early growth stage, and higher in BSF plots than that of conventional fertilization (CF). BSF plot showed higher growth rate, and uptake amount of nitrogen of onion by 59-69% than that of CF. N use efficiency in BSF was higher in the order of two time-split application, one time-split application, and three time application. K use efficiency was high 13-17% BSF plots than that in CF($63kg\;ha^{-1}$) plots. The amount of residual N in soils was high by 8-14% in BSF plots compared to that in CF plots, and the loss of N was lowered 26-34% by BSF. Also, the amount of residual K in soils was high by 13-18% and the loss of K was low by 29-31% in BSF plots compared to that in CF plots. The yield of onions increased by 7-13% by BSF due to increased diameter and weight of bulbs. As the results, N fertilization efficiency increased by 22-42% by BSF.

Development of an Alcoholic Drink Using Onion Extract. (양파즙을 사용한 알코올 음료의 개발)

  • This study was carried out to develope an alcoholic drink by fermentation of onion extract using Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The optimal conditions for ethanol production were obtained by standing culture at $25^{\circ}C$ for 5 days with 5% inoculum volume. At the results by flask culture, the growth curve of used S. cerevisiae reached to the stantionary phase at 48 hr and the death phase at 90 hr, whereas ethanol production reached maximum at 114 hr. Under the above conditions, a large scale production was carried out. A standing culture in 5 l fermenter showed the similar results to its flask culture, but progressed 24 hr rapidly more than that of the flask culture. A fed-batch culture was performed by addition of the onionic medium supplemented with 10% (v/v) sucrose after 72 hr from the fermenting start. The fed-batch culture could prevent S. cerevisiae from entering into the death phase and maintain constant level of alcohol production. A continuous culture was able to carry out by adding per every 24 hr the onionic medium supplemented with 10% (v/v) sucrose after 72 hr from the fermenting start. Although S. cerevisiae used showed a little decreased growth, alcohol production maintained roughly the constant level at the maximum yield. To enhance the quality of this alcoholic drink, $2-O-{\alpha}-D-glucopyranosyl$ L-ascorbic acid (AA-2G) was supplemented into the onion extract of the substrate for fermentation. As resulted at this study, this alcoholic drink containing AA-2G should be used as a functional fermented alcohol drink strengthened with vitamin C.
