  • Disaster response robots are deployed to disaster sites where human access is difficult and dangerous. The disaster response robots explore the disaster sites prevent a structural collapse and perform lifesaving to minimize damage. It is difficult to operate robots in the disaster sites due to rough terrains where various obstacles are scattered, communication failures and invisible environments. In this paper, we developed a series connectable wheeled robot module. The series connectable wheeled robot module was developed into two types: an active driven robot module and a passive driven robot module. A wheeled robot was built by connecting the two active type robot modules and one passive type robot module. Two robot modules were connected by one DoF rotating joint, allowing the wheeled robot to avoid obstructions in a vertical direction. The wheeled robot performed driving and obstacle avoidance using only pressure sensors, which allows the wheeled robot operate in the invisible environment. An obstacle avoidance experiment was conducted to evaluate the performance of the wheeled robot consisting of two active driven wheeled robot modules and one passive driven wheeled robot module. The wheeled robot successfully avoided step-shaped obstacles with a maximum height of 80 mm in a time of 24.5 seconds using only a pressure sensors, which confirms that the wheeled robot possible to perform the driving and the obstacle avoidance in invisible environment.

  • The control moment gyroscope(CMG) can be used for essential balancing control of a one-wheeled mobile robot. A single-gimbal CMG has a simple structure and can supply strong restoring torque against external disturbances. However, the CMG generates unwanted directional torque also besides the restoring torque; the unwanted directional torque causes instability in the one-wheeled robot control system that has high rotational degrees of freedom. This study proposes a control system for a one-wheeled mobile robot by using a CMG scissored pair to eliminate the unwanted directional torque. The well-known LQR control algorithm is designed for robustness against modeling error in the dynamic motion equations of a one-wheeled robot. Computer simulations for 3D nonlinear dynamic equations are carried out to verify the proposed control system with the CMG scissored pair and the LQR control algorithms.

  • In this paper, a DOB (disturbance observer) is designed for the steering stabilization of one-wheeled balancing robot. Based on the simple stick model of the single-wheeled robot, DOBs and the corresponding Q filters are designed. Although the proposed models are simple, DOBs are desired to deal with model uncertainties for the enhanced balancing performance. Experimental studies of two different cases of Q filter design are conducted to evaluate the performances of DOBs. Their performances are compared through balancing control experiments.

  • This paper presents the development and balancing control of GYROBO, a one wheeled mobile robot system. GYROBO is a disc type one wheel mobile robot that has three actuators, a drive motor, a spin motor, and a tilt motor. The dynamics and kinematics of GYROBO are analyzed, and simulation studies conducted. A one-wheeled robot, GYROBO is built and its balancing control is performed. Experimental studies of GYROBO's balancing abilities are conducted to demonstrate the gyroscopic effects generated by the spin and tilt angles of a flywheel.

  • Reducing odometer errors caused by kinematic imperfections in wheeled mobile robots is imestigated. Wheel diameters and wheelbase are corrected by using encoders without landmarks. A new velocity trajectory is proposed that compensates for an orientation error due to acceleration- resolution constraints on motor controllers. Based on this velocity trajectory, the wheel velocity of one out of two driven wheels may be changed by the traveled distance of the mobile robot. It is shown that a wheeled mobile robot can't move along a straight line exactly, even if kinematic correction are achieved perfectly, and this phenomenon is attributable to acceleration-resolution constraints on motor controllers. We experiment on a wheeled mobile robot with 2 d.o.f. are used in the experiment to verify the proposed scheme.

  • We propose time-optimal cornering motion trajectory planning and control algorithms for differential wheeled mobile robot with motor actuating voltage constraint, under piecewise constant control input condition. For time-optimal cornering trajectory generation, 1) we considered mobile robot's dynamics including actuator motors, 2) divided the cornering trajectory into one liner section, followed by two cornering section with angular acceleration and deceleration, and finally one liner section, and 3) formulated an efficient trajectory generation algorithm satisfying the bang-bang control principle. Also we proposed an efficient trajectory control algorithm and implemented with an X-bot to prove the performance.

  • A differential drive wheeled robot is a kind of mobile robot suitable for indoor navigation. Model predictive control is an optimal control technique with various advantages and can achieve excellent performance. One of the main advantages of model predictive control is that it can easily handle constraints. Therefore, it deals with realistic constraints of the mobile robot and achieves admirable performance for trajectory tracking. In addition, the intention of the robot can be properly realized by adjusting the weight of the cost function component. This control technique is applied to the local planner of the navigation component so that the mobile robot can operate in real environment. Using the Robot Operating System (ROS), which has transcendent advantages in robot development, we have ensured that the algorithm works in the simulation and real experiment.

  • Path following of the mobile robot is one research hot for the mobile robot navigation. For the control system of the wheeled mobile robot(WMR) being in nonhonolomic system and the complex relations among the control parameters, it is difficult to solve the problem based on traditional mathematics model. In this paper, we presents a simple and effective way of implementing an adaptive following controller based on the PID for mobile robot path following. The method uses a non-linear model of mobile robot kinematics and thus allows an accurate prediction of the future trajectories. The proposed controller has a parallel structure that consists of PID controller with a fixed gain. The control law is constructed on the basis of Lyapunov stability theory. Computer simulation for a differentially driven nonholonomic mobile robot is carried out in the velocity and orientation tracking control of the nonholonomic WMR. The simulation results of wheel type mobile robot platform are given to show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

  • This paper presents implementation and control of a two wheeled mobile robot system which consists of two systems, an inverted pendulum system and a mobile robot system. Control purpose is to regulate its balancing and navigation. The balancing robot has advantages of one point turning and robust balancing against disturbances from the ground. Simulation studies of local and global control methods are performed. Since the robot is implemented to have a symmetrical structure, simple linear control algorithms are used for balancing and navigation. Low cost sensors such as gyro and tilt sensor are fused together to detect the inclined angle. Experimental studies of following desired circular trajectory are conducted.

  • In this paper, we develop a single wheeled robot that has one wheel to move. The single wheel robot is similar to a rolling disk relying on gyroscopic motions to balance. The Gyrobo consists of three actuators: a spin motor, a tilt motor and a drive motor. The spin motor spins a flywheel at high rate so that it provides the balancing stability to upright the robot. The tilt motor controls steering of the robot by gyroscopic effect. The drive motor make forward accelerated motion to the robot. We have built and tested the Gyrobo to turn and move forward.
