  • AODV routing protocol is intended for use by mobile' nodes in an ad-hoc network. In AODV nodes create routes on an on-demand basis. As the degree of node mobility becomes high, however, the number of the control packets, RREQ and RREP messages, have increased so rapidly. The unexpected increases in the number of the control packets cause the destination node to decrease the packet receiving rate and also to increase the overall energy consumption of such a network. In this paper, we propose a novel method of adaptively controlling the occurrences of such RREQ messages based on AIAD (additive increase additive decrease) under a consideration of the current network status. We have tested our proposed method with the conventional AODV and the method using timestamp based on the three performance metrics, i.e.. how long does node moves, node velocity, and node density, to compare their performance.

  • In optical networks, traffic demands often demonstrate periodic nature for which time-overlapping property can be utilized in routing and wavelength assignment (RWA). A RWA problem for scheduled lightpath demands (SLDs) has been solved by combinatorial optimal solution (COS) and graph coloring, or heuristic sequential RWA (sRWA). Such methods are very complex and incurs large computational overhead. In this paper, we propose an efficient RWA algorithm to utilize the time disjoint property as well as space disjoint property through fast grouping of SLDs. The computer simulation shows that our proposed algorithm indeed achieves up to $54\%$ faster computation with similar number of wavelengths than the existing heuristic sRWA algorithm.

  • The growing demand for customer-response, made-to-order manufacturing and satisfactory delivery are stimulating the importance of commercial fleet management problem. Moreover, the rapid transformation to the customer-oriented multi-frequency, relatively small fleet, such as home delivery and Perishable goods, requiring prompt delivery and advanced real-time operation of vehicle fleets. In this paper we consider the vehicle routing problem(VRP) to minimize delivery completion time which is equal to the time that last customer wait for the vehicle in fleet operation. The mathematical formulation is different from those for the classical VRP which is minimizing cost/distance/time by running vehicles in manager's point of view. The key aspect of this model is not considering the return time from the last customer to depot in every vehicle path. Thereby, the vehicle dispatcher can afford to dynamically respond to customer demand and vehicle availability. The customer's position concerned with minimizing waiting time that may be applied for the delivery of product required freshness or delivery time. Extensive experiments are carried out to compare the performance of minimizing delivery completion time by using the ILOG Solver which has the advantage of solving quickly an interim solution very near an optimal solution. The experimental results show that the suggested model can easily find near optimal solution in a reasonable computational time under the various combination of customers and vehicles.

  • NanoQplus, which is an embedded operating system for wireless sensor networks (WSNs) and developed by Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI), provides programmer-friendly preemptive multi-threading programming technique, but it has poor network protocol stack, as compared to TinyOS, one of the famous operating systems for WSNs. In this paper, we apply dynamic MANET on-demand routing (DYMO) protocol, which is being standardized in Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), to NanoQplus. Since DYMO has been proposed for mobile ad-hoc networks (MANETs) and MANETs have less resource restrictions than WSNs, the basic DYMO protocol cannot be applied to WSNs without modifications. Moreover, coherence with MAC protocol should be considered in order to eliminate redundant data between MAC and network layers. Thus, we propose a modified version of the basic DYMO protocol for NanoQplus. The experimental results from a real sensor network test-bed show that the DYMO implementation using NanoQplus works efficiently in WSNs.

  • As to more efficiently manage the inventory in the retail supply chain and to meet the customer demand in a timely manner, vendor-managed inventory (VMI) has been widely accepted, which manages inventory in the retail supply chain via sharing information and collaborating with the retailers. Applying VMI generates vendor-managed inventory/distribution problem (VMIDP), which involves inventory management for both the vendor and the retailers, and the design of vehicle routes for delivery, to minimize the total operating cost in the supply chain. In this paper, we suggest a mixed integer programming (MIP) model to obtain the optimal solution for VMIDP in a two-echelon retail supply chain, and develop an efficient heuristic based on the operating principles of the MIP model. To evaluate the performance of the heuristic, its solution was compared with the one of the MIP model on a total of twenty seven test problems. As a result, the heuristic found optimal solutions on seven problems in a significantly reduced time, and generated a 4.3% error rate of total cost in average for all problems. The heuristic is applied to the case problem of the local famous franchise company together with GIS, showing that it is capable of providing a solution efficiently in a relatively short time even in the real world situation.

  • S plastic injection molding factory located at Namdong Industrial Complex in Incheon produces plastic parts for semiconductor, vacuum cleaners, office furniture, etc. It produces the parts to customers' order and delivers them directly to customers at due dates using the trucks of freight company. In recent years, it has been suffered from the excessive production cost, high lost sales rate, rigid response to customers' order, and high delivery cost, which affect negatively on its profit. This paper introduces a case study on the profit increase through a newly proposed production and distribution method which applies a make-to-stock and multi-visit delivery strategy at S plastic injection molding factory. The proposed method is evaluated by comparing with the current method with respect to sales profit using the historical data of customer demand. It is confirmed through the computational experiments that the proposed production and distribution method yields almost double increase in profit resulted from the increased production, reduced lost sales, reduced production cost, and reduced delivery cost.

  • Under amazing increase in markets and certain demand on qualified service in the delivery system, global logistic optimization is becoming a keen interest to provide an essential infrastructure coping with modern competitive prospects. As a key technology for such deployment, we have been engaged in the practical studies on vehicle routing problem (VRP) in terms of Weber model, and developed a hybrid approach of meta-heuristic methods and the graph algorithm of minimum cost flow problem. This paper extends such idea to multi-depot VRP so that we can give a more general framework available for various real world applications including those in green or low carbon logistics. We show the developed procedure can handle various types of problem, i.e., delivery, direct pickup, and drop by pickup problems in a common framework. Numerical experiments have been carried out to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method. Moreover, to enhance usability of the method, Google Maps API is applied to retrieve real distance data and visualize the numerical result on the map.

  • Multimedia services on the Internet are continuously increasing. Accordingly, the demand for a technology for efficiently delivering multimedia traffic is also constantly increasing. The multicast technique, that delivers the same content to several destinations, is constantly being developed. This technique delivers a content from a source to all destinations through the multicast tree. The multicast tree with low cost increases the utilization of network resources. However, the finding of the optimal multicast tree that has the minimum link costs is very difficult and its calculation complexity is the same as the complexity of the Steiner tree calculation which is NP-complete. Therefore, we need an effective way to obtain a multicast tree with low cost and less calculation time on SDN-based smart network platforms. In this paper, we propose a new multicast tree generation algorithm which produces a multicast tree using an agent trained by model-based meta reinforcement learning. Experiments verified that the proposed algorithm generated multicast trees in less time compared with existing approximation algorithms. It produced multicast trees with low cost in a dynamic network environment compared with the previous DQN-based algorithm.

  • With the evolution of communication networks, there is a growing demand for stable high-speed data connections to support services relying on large-capacity data. The increasing volume of packet data aggregated from user devices underscores the significance of quality diagnostics for the backhaul network, an intermediate link transmitting data to the core network. This paper conducts empirical research on techniques to diagnose issues within the backhaul network through practical case studies, through diagnosing various factors such as circuit bandwidth, speed disparities within switches, network segment-specific buffer sizes, routing policies, among other factors that could potentially cause RTT (Round Trip Time) delays and performance degradation.

  • Wireless smart sensor networks (WSSNs) have been proposed by a number of researchers to evaluate the current condition of civil infrastructure, offering improved understanding of dynamic response through dense instrumentation. As focus moves from laboratory testing to full-scale implementation, the need for multi-hop communication to address issues associated with the large size of civil infrastructure and their limited radio power has become apparent. Multi-hop communication protocols allow sensors to cooperate to reliably deliver data between nodes outside of direct communication range. However, application specific requirements, such as high sampling rates, vast amounts of data to be collected, precise internodal synchronization, and reliable communication, are quite challenging to achieve with generic multi-hop communication protocols. This paper proposes two complementary reliable multi-hop communication solutions for monitoring of civil infrastructure. In the first approach, termed herein General Purpose Multi-hop (GPMH), the wide variety of communication patterns involved in structural health monitoring, particularly in decentralized implementations, are acknowledged to develop a flexible and adaptable any-to-any communication protocol. In the second approach, termed herein Single-Sink Multi-hop (SSMH), an efficient many-to-one protocol utilizing all available RF channels is designed to minimize the time required to collect the large amounts of data generated by dense arrays of sensor nodes. Both protocols adopt the Ad-hoc On-demand Distance Vector (AODV) routing protocol, which provides any-to-any routing and multi-cast capability, and supports a broad range of communication patterns. The proposed implementations refine the routing metric by considering the stability of links, exclude functionality unnecessary in mostly-static WSSNs, and integrate a reliable communication layer with the AODV protocol. These customizations have resulted in robust realizations of multi-hop reliable communication that meet the demands of structural health monitoring.
