Immersive multimedia comprising metadata for five senses can provide user experience by stimulating memory and sensation. In the case of olfactory-enhanced multimedia, a computer-generated smell is combined with additional media content to create a richer and/or more realistic experience for the user. Although several studies have been conducted on olfactory-enhanced multimedia using e-nose and olfactory display, their practical applications have been severely restricted owing to the absence of a related standard. This paper proposes a method to standardize odor metadata obtained from an e-nose system, which has been particularly used to acquire data from different coffee aromas. Subsequently, the data were transferred to an odor display applicable for olfactory-enhanced multimedia using the ISO/IEC 23005 (MPEG-V) data template.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of olfactory stimulation on the balance ability of the elderly. Design: Randomized controlled trial. Methods: A total of 20 subjects were randomly assigned to the olfactory stimulation group (2 males and 8 females) and deception olfactory stimulation group (3 males and 7 females). Subjects were subjected to 30 second 3 times olfactory stimulation and deception olfactory stimulation, and the assessment measured pre and post postural distance and postural speed. Results: In the elderly, the olfactory stimulation group was significantly improved the postural distance and postural speed in the eyes closed state than the deception stimulation group (p<.05). Conclusion: As the information is provided through the olfactory stimulation, the postural distance and postural speed are significantly improved. therefore, it is expected that the olfactory stimulation in the elderly will be an effective intervention method to prevent fall.
Objectives : To analyze symptoms of olfactory dysfunction caused by COVID-19 from a Korean Medical Perspective. Methods : Previous studies dealing with olfactory dysfunction accompanying COVID-19 were studied and analyzed for general characterization. Physiology and pathology of olfactory functions within the classical texts of Korean Medicine were collected and analyzed, through which symptoms of olfactory dysfunction in COVID-19 were examined. Results : Olfactory dysfunction manifested in high ratios in the early stages of confirmed COVID-19 cases, at times independent of other nasal symptoms such as blockage or discharge. There was a high chance of loss of taste being accompanied, while mental problems such as a tendency to have difficulty concentrating were present as well. In most cases, recovery took one to two weeks. From a Korean Medical perspective, physiology of olfactory function is closely linked to the Lungs, Ancetral Qi[宗氣], and the Heart, while its dysfunction could be explained by pathological factors such as Wind-Cold, Fire stagnation, Qi deficiency, Wind stroke, etc. Conclusions : In the context of external contraction disease[外感病], olfactory dysfunction could be caused by problems in the Lungs and Stomach that are responsible for breathing, or the Heart which is involved in recognizing and differentiating scent. General characteristics of COVID-19 imply it to be closely related to the Heart. In clinical application, overall symptoms need to be considered in diagnosis and treatment planning, after which further approaches could made to determine the problem to be of the Lung and Stomach, or of the Heart.
Among the human senses, olfactory information still does not have a proper data presentation method unlike that regarding vision and auditory information. It makes presenting the sense of smell into multimedia information impossible, which may be an exploratory field in human computer interaction. In this paper, we propose an olfactory information presentation method, which is a way to use smell as multimedia information, and show an application for scent generation and odor display using a web service. The olfactory information can present smell characteristics such as intensity, persistence, hedonic tone, and odor description. The structure of data format based on olfactory information can also be organized according to data types such as integer, float, char, string, and bitmap. Furthermore, it can be used for data transmitting via a web service and for odor display using a scent generator. The scent generator, which can display information of smell, is developed to generate 6 odors using 6 aroma solutions and a diluted solution with 14 micro-valves and a micropump. Throughout the experiment, we confirm that the remote user can grasp information of smell transmitted by messenger service and request odor display to the computer controlled scent generator. It contributes to enlarge existing virtual reality and to be proposed as a standard reference method regarding olfactory information presentation for future multimedia technology.
Cameleon is a genetically engineered $Ca^{2+}$ sensing molecule consisting of two variants of the green fluorescent protein (GFP), calmodulin and calmodulin-binding protein, M13. HEK-293 cells stably expressing three types of cameleons, yellow cameleon-2, cameleon-3er, and cameleon-2nu, were constructed, and the expression and localization of these cameleons were confirmed by fluorescent imaging. Among the cameleons, the yellow cameleon-2 was selected for analyzing the change in $Ca^{2+}$ induced by the olfactory receptor-mediated signal transduction, because it is localized in the cytosol and binds to cytosolic $Ca^{2+}$ ions. Cells stably expressing yellow cameleon-2 were transfected with each of the test olfactory receptor genes, odr-10 and 17, and the expression of the olfactory receptor genes were examined using immunocytochenmical methods and RT-PCR. Stimulating each olfactory receptor with its specific odorant caused an increase in the intracellular $Ca^{2+}$ level, which was measured using yellow cameleon-2. These results demonstrate that yellow cameleon-2 can be conveniently used to examine the function of the olfactory receptors expressed in heterologous cells.
The aim of this study was to investigate effects of odor intensity on the olfactory sensibility and sensibility structure. Three odor samples(B, C, and D) of T&T olfactometer were selected by the preference rank : the lowest preference(C) ; the moderate one(B) ; and the highest one(D). Three levels(-1, +1, and +3) of odor intensity at each sample were presented to 50 subjects(25 female, 25 male), and the olfactory sensibility was rated by using semantic differential scale composed 25 sensibility characteristics. At each sample, the olfactory sensibility was significantly affected by the odor intensity. Moreover, the structure of olfactory sensibility was influenced by the odor intensity. However, two sensibility factors such as 'aesthetics' and 'intensity' were common factors, whereas 'mildness', 'complexity', and 'activity' were unique factors with odor intensity. In conclusion, the olfactory sensibility was significantly affected by the odor intensity and the odor preference.

An olfactory display is a device that delivers smells to the nose. It provides us with special effects, for example to emit smell as if you were there or to give a trigger for reminding us of memories. The authors have developed a tabletop display system connected with the olfactory display.
PSA, UEA I, PHA-L, GSL I B4, GSL I, PNA, ECL, SBA, GSL II PSA, UEA I, GSL I
Objectives : The purpose of this study is to report the effect of Korean medicine on olfactory disorders due to chronic sinusitis. Methods : Two patients with chronic sinusitis complaining of olfactory disturbances, nasal obstruction, and purulent discharge were treated with herbal medicines and acupuncture treatment. The nasal endoscopic examination and paranasal sinuses x-ray series (PNS x-ray) were performed. In addition, numeral rating scale (NRS) of olfactory disturbances and degrees of nasal obstruction and purulent discharge were evaluated. Results : In cases 1 and 2, NRS of olfactory disturbances decreased from 9 to 1. Nasal obstruction and purulent discharge decreased to no symptoms or intermittent level at moderate or severe level. The endoscopic findings and PNS x-ray findings were improved after treatments. Among various treatments of Korean medicine, Gamitonggyu-tang may play a crucial role in the reduction of sinusitis and olfactory disorders. Conclusions : This case report can be used as a basis for the use of Korean medicine, Gamitonggyu-tang, for olfactory disorder due to chronic sinusitis.
