The reliability of power transmission and distribution depends up on the consistency of insulation in the high voltage power transformer. In recent times, considering the drawbacks of conventional mineral oils such as poor biodegradability and poor fire safety level, several research works are being carried out on natural ester based nanofluids. Earlier research works show that sunflower oil has similar dielectric characteristics compared with mineral oil. BIOTEMP oil which is now commercially available in the market for transformers is based on sunflower oil. Addition of nanofillers in the base oil improves the dielectric characteristics of liquid insulation. Only few results are available in the literature about the insulation characteristics of nano modified natural esters. Hence understanding the influence of addition of nanofillers in the dielectric properties of sunflower oil and collecting the database is important. Considering these facts, present work contributes to investigate the important characteristics such as partial discharge, lightning impulse, breakdown strength, tandelta, volume resistivity, viscosity and thermal characteristics of $SiO_2$ nano modified sunflower oil with different wt% concentration of nano filler material varied from 0.01wt% to 0.1wt%. From the obtained results, nano modified sunflower oil shows better performance than virgin sunflower oil and hence it may be a suitable candidate for power transformer applications.

Porous bearings are lubricated the oil that is contained in porous metal. Then they are always used with no oil supply, because of that, widely used electric motors. But, if oil flow out less than the limit, troubles often happen. This report shows that attempt of estimating oil quantity in porous bearing by using calculation that based Reynols' equation and Darcy's law, aimed of developing long life bearing. And comparing with experimental and calculation result, we show possibility of estimating rest oil quantity in porous bearing at steadry state by calculation.
The purpose of this study was to establish an assessment method for the estimation of the pollution risk by oil spill accidents. Various oil spill patterns were calculated based on past accidents in the study area and these results were analyzed statistically. Then the risk probability, the oil arrival time, risk range, and so on were calculated. These calculations were performed for sub area sectors, fisheries and aquaculture farms, based on information about environmentally sensitive resources. Finally, the risk to each sub area sector was assessed by comparing the calculated results. These consequences indicated the objective and general risks of oil spill accidents and the result of this method will be made more appropriate by integrating real time risk predictions.
Oil-based nanofluids are prepared by dispersing spherical and fiber-shaped $Al_2O_3$ and AlN nanoparticles in transformer oil. Two hydrophobic surface modification processes are compared in this investigation. It is obvious that the combination of nanoparticle, surfactant and surface modification process is very important for the dispersity of nanofluids. For ($Al_2O_3$+AIN) particles with 1% volume fraction, the enhancement of thermal conductivity and convective heat transfer coefficient is nearly 11% and 30%, respectively, compared to pure transformer oil. The cooling effect of ($Al_2O_3$+AlN)-oil nanofluids on the heating element and oil itself is confirmed by a natural convection test using a prototype transformer.
Vegetable oil dielectrics have been used in transformers as green alternatives to mineral insulating oils for about twenty years, because of their advantages of non-toxic, biodegradability, and renewability. However, the viscosity of vegetable oils is more than 3 times of mineral oils, which means a poor heat dissipation capacity. To get low-viscosity dielectrics, transesterification and purification were performed to prepare vegetable oil methyl esters in this study. Electrical and physical properties were determined to investigate their potential as dielectrics. The results showed that the methyl ester products had good dielectric strengths, high water saturation and enough fire resistance. The viscosities (at $40^{\circ}C$) were 0.2 times less than FR3 fluid, and 0.7 times less than mineral oil, which indicated superior cooling capacity as we expected. With the assistance of 0.5 wt% pour point depressants, canola oil methyl ester exhibited the lowest pour point ($-26^{\circ}C$) among the products which was lower than FR3 fluid ($-21^{\circ}C$) and 25# mineral oil ($-23^{\circ}C$). Thus, canola oil methyl ester was the best candidate as a low-viscosity vegetable oil-based dielectric. The low-viscosity fluid could extend the service life of transformers by its better cooling capacity compared with nature ester dielectrics.
Owing to the rising volume of seaborne trade, oil spills damage the marine environment for over 250 yearly. Thus, various analysis methods such as the Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR), Raman spectroscope, and gas chromatography are used to monitor oil spills at sea, but these methods are expensive. Recently, to reduce operational costs, an underwater fluorometer was adopted. However, this approach is not ideal for the remote sensing of oil spills because the device gets submerged in the sea. In this study, we have designed and developed a monitoring system that uses ultraviolet fluorescence to detect spilled oil or water from a distance, as well as proposed an analyzing method defining based on water Raman signal and QF535. Each fluorescence spectrum of water, oil (crude oil), and Bunker A was obtained using the system, and was calculated and analyzed from the spectrum individually. Based on the results of the analysis, we could successfully identity water and oil at a long distance.
In recent times, development of nanofluid insulation for power transformers is a hot research topic. Many researchers reported the enhancement in dielectric characteristics of nano modified mineral oils. Considering the drawbacks of petroleum based mineral oil, it is necessary to understand the dielectric characteristics of nanofluids developed with natural ester based oils. Palm oil has better insulation characteristics comparable to mineral oil. However very few research reports is available in the area of nanofluids based on palm oil. Partial discharge (PD) is one of the major sources of insulation performance degradation of transformer oil. It is essential to understand the partial discharge(PD) characteristics by collecting huge data base of PD performance of nano modified palm oil which will increase its confidence level for power transformer application. Knowing these facts, in the present work, certain laboratory experiments have been performed on PD characteristics of nano $SiO_2$ modified palm oil at different electrode configurations. Influence of concentration of nano filler material on the PD characteristics is also studied. Partial discharge inception voltage, Phase resolved partial discharge (PRPD) pattern, PD signal time-frequency domain characteristics, PD signal equivalent timelength-bandwidth mapping, Weibull distribution statistical parameters of PRPD pattern, skewness, repetition rate and phase angle variations are evaluated at different test conditions. From the results of the experiments conducted, we came to understand that PD performance of palm oil is considerably enhanced with the addition of $nano-SiO_2$ filler at 0.01%wt and 0.05%wt concentration. Significant reduction in PD inception voltage, repetition rate, Weibull shape parameter and PD magnitude are noticed with addition of $SiO_2$ nanofillers in palm oil. These results will be useful for recommending nano modified palm oil for power transformer applications.

This study aimed to enhance the physicochemical properties of sodium iodide-based root filling materials, particularly solubility. In earlier developmental stages, the iodoform-containing paste exhibited high antibacterial efficacy but failed to meet only the solubility requirement among the ISO 6876 criteria. Therefore, this study focused on enhancing the physicochemical properties of the paste under development, particularly centering on reducing its solubility. Four experimental groups were established, including three control group. The previously developed D30 paste was named the Oil 33 group, and the control group was named the Vitapex® group. The Oil 50 group, in which the oil content was increased, and the Oil 45L group, in which lanolin was incorporated. The physical properties (solubility, pH, flowability, and film thickness) of the four pastes were evaluated according to the ISO 6876 standards. No significant differences were observed between the Oil 45L and Vitapex® groups in any of the physical property evaluations. While the Oil 33 and Oil 50 groups met the ISO 6876 standards for flowability and film thickness, the Oil 45L group met all the physical properties. However, reducing the overall oil content may be necessary to enhance the antimicrobial properties. The result of the physicochemical experiments showed that the Oil 45L group with the newly formulated composition and incorporated lanolin exhibited low solubility meeting the ISO 6876 standard of ≤ 3%. We were able to develop a paste with more stable solubility than previous iodide-based root-filling materials. Therefore, the oil content must be further adjusted to improve its antimicrobial properties. If other physical properties also meet the ISO 6876 standards and demonstrate excellent results in cytotoxicity tests, this root filling material could potentially replace existing options.
This study presents work to utilize RADARSAT SAR image for forecast oil slick trajectory movement. The fractal dimension algorithm used to detect oil slick. The Doppler frequency shift and quasi-linear model was used to simulate a current pattern from RADARSAT image. The Fay’s algorithm of oil slick spreading was developed based on a Doppler frequency shift model. Thus, the study shows that fractal dimension algorithm discriminated the oil slick from the surrounding water features. The quasi-linear model shows that the current pattern can be simulated from single RADARSAT image. The oil slick trajectory model shows that after 48 hrs, the oil slick parcels deposited along the coastal waters.

Mineral oils are commonly used as transformer insulation oils but these oils are obtained from non-renewable and non-sustainable sources, which is highly undesirable. For this reason, natural ester oils are now being used in replacement of mineral oils because of their good biodegradability, high cooling stability, good oxidation stability and excellent insulation performance. Nanotechnology has gained prominence in both academic and industrial fields over the years and it has been shown in previous studies that nanoscale materials are useful for transformers due to their favourable dielectric properties. The objective of this study is to compare the AC breakdown voltage and viscosity of natural ester oil with three types of nanofluids. The natural ester oil-based nanofluids are prepared by mixing palm fatty acid ester (PFAE) oil with three types of nanoparticles at a concentration of 0.01 g/l: (1) $Fe_3O_4$ conductive nanoparticles, (2) $TiO_2$ semi-conductive nanoparticles and (3) $Al_2O_3$ insulating nanoparticles. The AC breakdown voltage of the oil samples is analysed using Weibull statistical analysis and the results reveal that the PFAE oil-based $Fe_3O_4$ nanofluid gives exceptional dielectric performance compared to other oil samples, whereby the AC breakdown voltage increases by 43%. It can be concluded that the PFAE oil-based $Fe_3O_4$ nanofluid is a promising dielectric liquid to substitute mineral oils.
