Pipelines have the highest capacity and are the safest and the least environmentally disruptive means for transmitting gas or oil. Recently, failures due to corrosion defects have become a major concern in maintaining pipeline integrity. A number of solutions have been developed for the assessment of remaining strength of corroded pipelines. In this paper, a Fitness-For-Purpose(FFP) type limit load solution for corroded city gas pipelines is proposed. For this purpose, a series of burst tests with various types of machined defects were performed. Finite element simulations were carried out to derive an appropriate failure criterion. Based on such solution along with existing solutions, an integrity evaluation program for corroded city gas pipeline, COPAP-CITY, has been developed.
The owner of underground metallic structures (gas pipeline, oil pipeline, water pipeline, etc) has a burden of responsibility for the corrosion protection in order to prevent big accidents like gas explosion, soil pollution, leakage and so on. So far, Cathodic Protection(CP) technology have been implemented for protection of underground systems. The stray current from DC subway system in Korea has affected the cathodic protection (CP) design of the buried pipelines adjacent to the railroads. In this aspect, KERI has developed a various mitigation method, drainage system through steel bar under the rail, a stray current gathering mesh system, insulation method between yard and main line, distributed ICCP(Impressed Current Cathodic System), High speed response rectifier, restrictive drainage system, Boding ICCP system. We installed the mitigation system at the real field and test of its efficiency in Busan and Seoul, Korea. In this paper, the results of field test, especially, distributed ICCP are described.

It is well known that pipelines have the highest capacity and are the safest and least environmentally disruptive form of transporting oil and gas. However, pipeline damages caused by both internal and external corrosion is a major concern threatening the reliability of oil and gas transportation and the soundness of pipeline structure. In this study, we estimated the expected allowable damage defect by comparing the ASTM B31G code which has been developed as the evaluation method of reliability and incident prevention of damaged pipelines based on the amount of loss due to corrosion and the yield strength of materials to a modified theory considering diverse detailed corrosional forms. Furthermore, we suggested the method that estimates the expected life span of used pipelines by utilizing the reliability method based on major variables such as, the depth and length of damage and corrosional rate affecting the life expectancy of pipelines.

Pressurized gas pipeline is subject to harmful effects both of the surrounding environment and of the materials transmitted in them. In order to maintain the integrity, reliable assessment procedures including tincture mechanics analysis etc are required. Up to now, the integrity assessment has been performed using conventional deterministic approaches even though there are many uncertainties to hinder a rational evaluation. In this respect, probabilistic approach is considered as an appropriate method for gas pipeline evaluation. The objectives of this paper are to estimate the failure probability of corroded pipeline in gas and oil plants and to propose limited operating conditions under different types of leadings. To do this, a probabilistic assessment program using reliability index and simulation techniques was developed and applied to evaluate failure probabilities of corroded API-5L-X52/X60 gas pipelines subjected to internal pressure, bending moment and combined loading. The evaluation results showed a promising applicability of the probabilistic integrity assessment program.
Pipelines have the highest capacity and are the safest and the least environmentally disruptive way for gas or oil transmission. Recently, failures due to corrosion defects have become of major concern in maintaining pipeline integrity. A number of solutions have been developed for the assessment of remaining strength of corroded pipelines. However, these solutions are known to be dependent on material properties and pipeline geometries. In this paper, a Fitness-For-Purpose type limit load solution for corroded gas pipelines made of the X65 steel is proposed. For this purpose, a series of burst tests with various types of corrosion defects are performed. Finite element simulations are carried out to derive an appropriate failure criterion. And then, further, extensive finite element analyses are performed to obtain the FFP type limit load solution for corroded X65 gas pipelines as a function of defect depth, length and pipeline geometry. And also, a window based computer program far the assessment of corrosion defect, which is named as COPAP(COrroded Pipeline Assessment Program) has been developed on the basis of proposed limit load solution.
Because of the continuous growth of energy consumption, and also the tendency to site power lines and pipelines along the same routes, the close proximity of high voltage structures and metallic pipelines has become more and more frequent. Moreover, normal steady state and fault currents become higher as electric networks increase in size and power Therefore, there has been and still is a growing concern(safety of people marking contact with pipeline, risk of damage to the pipeline coating, the metal and equipment connected to pipeline, especially cathodic protection system) about possible hazards resulting from the influence of high voltage power system on metallic structures(gas pipeline, oil pipeline and water pipeline etc.). Therefore, we analyze the interference problems when the gas pipeline is buried with power cable in the same submarine tunnel. This paper present the results of the study about interference mechanism, AC corrosion limitation of safety voltage and analysis of induction voltage.
In present, most of metallic structures (gas pipeline, oil pipeline, water pipeline, etc) are running parallel with subway in Seoul and Pusan. In this case, subway system make a stray current due to electrical corrosion on metallic structures. The owner of metallic structures has a burden of responsibility for the protection of corrosion and the prevention against big accident such as gas explosion or soil pollution and so on. So, they have to measure and analyze the data about P/S(Pipe to Soil) potential, amplitude of stray current, point of source of stray current and so on. In this paper, results of development about Wireless Remote Monitoring and Control System on Underground Pipeline in Stray Current Conditions are presented. And also field test data should be reporting.
During the installation of crude oil or gas pipelines, which pass through onshore buried pipelines or onshore pipeline from subsea pipeline to onshore plant, countermeasures need to be implemented so as to ensure a sufficient design life by protecting the steel pipes against corrosion. This can be achieved through impressed current cathodic protection method for onshore pipelines and through galvanic sacrificial anode corrosion protection method for offshore pipelines. In particular, in the case of impressed current cathodic protection, isolation joint flanges should be used. However, this makes maintenance control difficult with its installation having a negative impact on price. Therefore, in this study, the most suitable methodology for onshore pipeline protection between galvanic sacrificial anode corrosion protection and impressed current cathodic protection method will be introduced. In oil and gas transportation facilities, the media can be carried to the end users via onshore buried and/or offshore pipeline. It is imperative for the field operators, pipeline engineers, and designers to be corrosion conscious as the pipelines would undergo material degradations due to corrosion. The mitigation can be achieved with the introduction of an impressed current cathodic protection method for onshore buried pipelines and a galvanic sacrificial anode corrosion protection method for offshore pipelines. In the case of impressed current cathodic protection, isolation joint flanges should be used to discontinuity. However, this makes maintenance control to be difficult when its installation has a negative impact on the price. In this study, the most suitable corrosion protection technique between galvanic sacrificial anode corrosion protection and impressed current cathodic protection is introduced for (economic life of) onshore buried pipeline.
Pressure propagation and attenuation characteristics in a hydraulic pipeline with a bellows type accumulator was investigated by theoretical analyses and experiments. In the first stage of the study, equations to evaluate the amount of oil volume charged into the bellows together with nitrogen gas were proposed. In the next stage, the authors suggested a mathematical model based on transfer matrix method to describe the dynamic characteristics of the pipe element with a metal bellows type accumulator. Through comparisons and considerations of the experimental and the numerical data shown in frequency domain, the validity of the mathematical model was confirmed.
This article briefly tests and analyzes the sulfur content and the distribution of active sulfur in the crude oil of Kurkow Kazakhstan and Siberian Russian, and discusses the relationship between active sulfur content and total sulfur content, active sulfur and corrosion. At the same time, it measures the open circuit potential of X70 steel and X60 steel witch have been immerged in the above two kind of crude oil for a period of time, discusses the sulfur corrosion to metal.
