  • To address the issue of global warming, various regulations and policies for reducing greenhouse gas emissions are being implemented. In this context, the number of countries targeting carbon neutrality, the latter of which entails reducing net carbon emissions to zero, is increasing, and small modular reactors (SMRs) are investigated extensively as a new model for power plants. SMRs, although measuring only 5%-10% of the size of conventional large nuclear power plants, are highly efficient systems that can generate hundreds of megawatts of power. Compared with fossil fuel-based power plants, SMRs generate less carbon emissions and can complement the unstable energy supply from renewable sources. However, the use of SMRs is opposed by local residents owing to the risk of significant radioactive-material leakage when a nuclear-power-plant accident occurs. Hence, floating, small nuclear-power vessels are being investigated and installed in the ocean, thus simplifying the process of securing land, compensating nearby residents, and increasing safety against natural disasters. In this study, the towing stability of SMR power ships is analyzed, and the result shows no significant risk of towing to the destination in sea states 3, 4, and 5.

  • Since the export of Korean-type APR 1400 in 2009 to the UAE, Korea has been achieved management performance, quality inspections, training, nuclear fuel exports for the nuclear power plant. Despite this apparent growth, there are lacking of the research on the marine transportation of radioactive waste. And the terrible accident at the Japan nuclear power plant in 2011 has caused another reconsideration such as emergency response training and plan, reinforcement of safety regulation. According to the Korean government aims to rebuild the appropriate regulation, training, education that is necessary in order to ensure the safety of marine transportation of radioactive waste. Therefore, this study analyzed the various problems identified by the team of experts for the radioactive waste and marine field, the investigation of relevant legal basis, the need for emergency response training for the person in charge of radioactive waste and suggested the simulation-based interactive curriculum during the process of safety verification related to the marine transport of mid- and low-level radioactive waste generated at the Yeon-ggwang nuclear power(Hanbit) plant in 2015.

  • We investigated fish species composition seasonally at the intake and discharge of Weolseong Nuclear Power Plant (WS-NPP) from February to November 2008 using a trammel net. At the intake, 121 individuals belonging to 28 species were collected, and 157 fish from 34 species were sampled at the WS-NPP discharge. Dominant species at the intake were Chelidonichthys spinosus (17.2%), Scomber japonicus (11.5%) and Ditrema temminckii (8.2%) at the intake, while Sillago japonica (18.5%), Chelidonichthys spinosus (13.4%) and Konosirus punctatus (8.3%) dominated at the discharge. The species count and diversity index at the discharge were highest during winter, whereas those at the intake were highest during spring, perhaps due to warm seawater at the discharge site. This study is the first to reveal an effect of effluent water on the aggregation of warm water fish species during winter.

  • Most of steam power plants in Korea are using the method of heating the feed water whenever the ambient temperature around the power plant area below $5^{\circ}C$ to prevent freezing water flowing in the pipe in winter time. But this kind of heat supplying system is not useful to save energy. If we take the method that the temperature of the each pipe is controled by direct measure of temperature by attaching sensor on the outside surface of the feed water tubes, then we can expect that a plenty of energy can be saved. In this study, the computer simulation is used to compare the energy consumption loads of both systems. Energy saving rate is calculated for the location of Incheon area in winter season. Four convection heat transfer coefficients for the ambient air and three initial flowing water temperature inside the tube were used. The result shows that the temperature control system using sensor represents more than 95% of energy saving rate in Incheon area. Even in the severe January weather condition, the energy saving rate is almost 75% in two days basis and even 83% in one day basis.

  • The present study was initiated to protect floating nuclear power plants from the tornado. The solution shows that a tonado induces extreme waves of 27 ft (8.2 m) in height if it crosses the basin with a speed close to the critical speed. Waves generated by wind stress are ignored.

  • Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are ubiquitous contaminants in coastal marine environment. PAHs enter estuarine and nearshore marine environment via several routes such as combustion of fossil fuels, domestic and industrial effluents and oil spills. In August of 1997, sediment and mussels (Mytilus edulis) were collected at 6 sites near Kori nuclear power plant in order to analyze the PAH content by HPLC with uv/vis detection. The concentrations of 15 PAH in sediment ranged from < 1 to 5,900 ppb ( mean 173.5$\pm$99.7 ppb), and in mussels, from < 0.5 to 4,125 ppb (mean 105$\pm$60.5 ppb). Compared with other studies world over, the concentrations of carcinogenic PAHs were relatively low in both sediment and mussels from the intertidal zone of Kori. This study presents preliminary data for the PAH levels in sediment and mussels from the intertidal zone of Kori, and the data will hopefully be utilized for the assessment of oil pollution in the Southeast East Sea, Korea (especially for the PAHs).
