  • As an effort for modeling the water waves propagating in a wide range of incident angles as when waves are diffracted behind a breakwater, angular spectrum models have been developed. In this paper, the concept of the angular spectrum is illustrated and the recently developed angular spectrum models are introduced.

  • Wave nonlinearity and dispersivity have mutually counteracting effects on the wave evolution process; i.e., the former makes the wave profile steeper, while the latter milder. Therefore to describe evolution of nonlinear water waves under general condition such as nonlinear random waves over arbitrary depths, both the wave nonlinearity and dispersivity must be properly taken into account in the wave modeling. • The modeling of realistic water-jet geometry is needed in order to facilitate the design modifications. The present paper proposes a method of generating inlet geometry. Inlet duct was represented by NURBS method which utilized the skinning and local cubic interpolation scheme. Three test examples are presented demonstrating the effectiveness of the methods of skinning and local cubic interpolation. Computational examples associated with practical configurations have shown the usefulness of the present method.

  • An ocean compartment model simulating transport of nuclides by advection due to ocean circulation and intertaction with suspended sediments is developed, by which concentration breakthrough curves of nuclides can be calculated as a function of time. Dividing ocean into arbitrary number of characteristic compartments and performing a balance of mass of nuclides in each ocean compartment, the governing equation for the concentration in the ocean is obtained and a solution by the numerical integration is obtained. The integration method is specially useful for general stiff systems. For transfer coefficients describing advective transport between adjacent compartments by ocean circulation, the ocean turnover time is calculated by a two-dimensional numerical ocean model. To exemplify the compartment model, a reference case calculation for breakthrough curves of three nuclides in low-level radioactive wastes, Tc-99, Cs-137, and Pu-238 released from hypothetical repository under the seabed is carried out with five ocean compartments. Sensitivity analysis studies for some parameters to the concentration breakthrough curves are also made, which indicates that parameters such as ocean turnover time and ocean water volume of compartments have an important effect on the breakthrough curves.

  • Ocean surface currents have an essential role in the Earth's climate system and significantly impact the marine ecosystem, weather patterns, and human activities. However, predicting ocean surface currents remains challenging due to the complexity and variability of the oceanic processes involved. This review article provides an overview of the current research status, challenges, and opportunities in the prediction of ocean surface currents. We discuss the various observational and modelling approaches used to study ocean surface currents, including satellite remote sensing, in situ measurements, and numerical models. We also highlight the major challenges facing the prediction of ocean surface currents, such as data assimilation, model-observation integration, and the representation of sub-grid scale processes. In this article, we suggest that future research should focus on developing advanced modeling techniques, such as machine learning, and the integration of multiple observational platforms to improve the accuracy and skill of ocean surface current predictions. We also emphasize the need to address the limitations of observing instruments, such as delays in receiving data, versioning errors, missing data, and undocumented data processing techniques. Improving data availability and quality will be essential for enhancing the accuracy of predictions. The future research should focus on developing methods for effective bias correction, a series of data preprocessing procedures, and utilizing combined models and xAI models to incorporate data from various sources. Advancements in predicting ocean surface currents will benefit various applications such as maritime operations, climate studies, and ecosystem management.
