In wireless sensor networks, a moving object tracking scheme is one of core technologies for real applications such as environment monitering and enemy moving tracking in military areas. However, no works have been carried out on processing the failure of object tracking in sparse sensor networks with holes. Therefore, the energy consumption in the existing schemes significantly increases due to plenty of failures of moving object tracking. To overcome this problem, we propose a novel moving object tracking scheme based on polynomial regression prediction in sparse sensor networks. The proposed scheme activates the minimum sensor nodes by predicting the trajectory of an object based on polynomial regression analysis. Moreover, in the case of the failure of moving object tracking, it just activates only the boundary nodes of a hole for failure recovery. By doing so, the proposed scheme reduces the energy consumption and ensures the high accuracy for object tracking in the sensor network with holes. To show the superiority of our proposed scheme, we compare it with the existing scheme. Our experimental results show that our proposed scheme reduces about 47% energy consumption for object tracking over the existing scheme and achieves about 91% accuracy of object tracking even in sensor networks with holes.

With recent advances in device fabrication technology, economical deployment of large scale sensor networks, a design of pervasive monitoring and control system has been made possible. In this paper, we present a new algorithm for one of the most likely applications for sensor networks; tracking moving targets. The proposed algorithm uses a cooperations between the sensor nodes which detect moving objects. Therefore, the proposed scheme is robust against prediction failures which may result in temporary loss of the target. Using simulations we show that tile proposed moving object tracking algorithm is capable of accurately tracking targets with random movement patterns.

Energy efficiency is one of the most critical issues in the design of wireless sensor networks. In object-tracking sensor networks, the data storage and query processing should be energy-conserving by decreasing the message complexity. In this paper, a Prediction-based Energy-conserving Approximate StoragE schema (P-EASE) is proposed, which can reduce the query error of EASE by changing its approximate area and adopting predicting model without increasing the cost. In addition, focusing on reducing the unnecessary querying messages, P-EASE enables an optimal query algorithm to taking into consideration to query the proper storage node, i.e., the nearer storage node of the centric storage node and local storage node. The theoretical analysis illuminates the correctness and efficiency of the P-EASE. Simulation experiments are conducted under semi-random walk and random waypoint mobility. Compared to EASE, P-EASE performs better at the query error, message complexity, total energy consumption and hotspot energy consumption. Results have shown that P-EASE is more energy-conserving and has higher location precision than EASE.

In wireless sensor networks, the selective wakeup scheme is one of the energy saving mechanisms, that is used for an object detecting or tracking. Recently, many protocols are proposed using the selective wakeup scheme for the continuous objects tracking such as forest fires and poison gas. They predict the future shape of continuous objects and activate only sensors in the predicted boundary area of the objects. It works correctly in a uniformly deployed wireless sensor networks. However, it cannot be directly applied to a randomly deployed sensor networks with voids. When the predicted area is in the void area, the activation message cannot reach and the predicted area cannot be activated at the right time. It leads to many detection errors for continuous object. Moreover, if a sensor is once foiled in a activation control then the next activation control might be continuously failed. The detection errors can be result in serious harm to people. In this paper, we propose a chaining selective wakeup scheme for robust continuous object tracking in wireless sensor networks. In our protocol, we collect the information of a void area during the network configuration time; if the next boundary area is in the void area, we activate the chained area surrounding the void area with activation control message.

Most existing routing protocols for object detection and tracking in wireless sensor networks concentrate on finding ways to detect and track one and more individual objects, e.g. people, animals, and vehicles, but they do not be interested in detecting and tracking of continuous objects, e.g., poison gas and biochemical. Such continuous objects have quite different properties from the individual objects since the continuous objects are continuously distributed across a region and usually occupy a large area, Thus, the continuous objects could be detected by a number of sensor nodes so that sensing data are redundant and highly correlated. Therefore, an efficient data collection and report scheme for collecting and locally aggregating sensing data is needed, In this paper, we propose the Continuous Object Tracking Mechanism based on Dynamic Rectangle Zone for detecting, tracking, and monitoring the continuous objects taking into account their properties.

The conventional object tracking techniques using PTZ camera detects object movements by analyzing acquired image. However, this technique requires expensive hardware devices to perform a complex image processing. And it is occasionally hard to detect object movements, if an acquired image is low quality or image acquisition is impossible. In this paper, we proposes a smart security CCTV system applying to wireless sensor network technique based on IEEE 802.15.4 standard to overcome the problems of conventional object tracking technique, which enables to track suspicious objects by detecting object movements and GPS data in sensor node. This system enables an efficient control of PTZ camera to observe a wide area, decreasing image processing complexity. Also, wireless sensor network is implemented using mesh networks to increase the efficiency of installing sensor node.

Energy efficiency in wireless sensor networks is a principal issue to prolong applications to track the movement of the large-scale phenomena. It is a selective wakeup approach that is an effective way to save energy in the networks. However, most previous studies with the selective wakeup scheme are concentrated on individual objects such as intruders and tanks, and thus cannot be applied for tracking continuous objects such as wild fire and poison gas. This is because the continuous object is pretty flexible and volatile due to its sensitiveness to surrounding circumferences so that movable area cannot be estimated by the just spatiotemporal mechanism. Therefore, we propose a cluster-based algorithm for applying the efficient and more accurate technique to the continuous object tracking in enough dense sensor networks. Proposed algorithm wakes up the sensors in unit cluster where target objects may be diffused or shrunken. Moreover, our scheme is asynchronous because it does not need to calculate the next area at the same time.

In wireless sensor networks, two methods have been generally used to track continuously moving object: a user query-based method and a periodic report-based method. Although the former method generates more overhead as a result of the user queries, the former one is also an energy-efficient method that does not transfer unnecessary information. For the user query-based method, a virtual tree that consist of sensor nodes is used to perform the user query and the sensor reporting. The tree stores the information of the mobile objects, and the stored information triggers a report b the user query. However, in case of a fast-moving object, the tracking accuracy decreases as a result of the time delay of the end-to-end repeated query. In order to solve this problem, we propose a query-relay method that reduces the time delay for mobile object tracking. In the proposed method, the nodes in the tree relay the query to adjacent nodes according to the movement of mobile object that is tracked. When the query messages are relayed. The end-to-end querying time delay is reduced. and a simulation shows that our method is superior to existing ones in terms of tracking accuracy.

For the moving objects with environmental sensors such as object tracking moving robot with audio and video sensors, environmental information acquired from sensors keep changing according to movements of objects. In such case, due to lack of adaptability and system complexity, conventional control schemes show limitations on control performance, and therefore, sensory-motor systems, which can intuitively respond to various types of environmental information, are desirable. And also, to improve the system robustness, it is desirable to fuse more than two types of sensory information simultaneously. In this paper, based on Braitenberg's model, we propose a sensory-motor based fusion system, which can trace the moving objects adaptively to environmental changes. With the nature of direct connecting structure, sensory-motor based fusion system can control each motor simultaneously, and the neural networks are used to fuse information from various types of sensors. And also, even if the system receives noisy information from one sensor, the system still robustly works with information from other sensors which compensates the noisy information through sensor fusion. In order to examine the performance, sensory-motor based fusion model is applied to object-tracking four-foot robot equipped with audio and video sensors. The experimental results show that the sensory-motor based fusion system can tract moving objects robustly with simpler control mechanism than model-based control approaches.

In wireless sensor networks, there have been two methods for sensing continuously moving object tracking: user-query based method and periodic report based method. Although the former method requires overhead for user query rather than the latter method, the former one is known as an energy-efficient method without transferring unnecessary information. In the former method, a virtual tree, consisting of sensor nodes, is exploited for the user querying and sensor reporting. The tree stores the information about mobile objects; the stored information is triggered to report by the user query. However, in case of fast moving object, the tracking accuracy reduces due to the time delay of end-to-end repeated query. To solve the problem, we propose a query relaying method reducing the time delay for mobile object tracking. In the proposed method, the nodes in the tree relay the query to the adjacent node according to the movement of mobile object tracking. Relaying the query message reduces the end-to-end querying time delay. Simulation results show that our method is superior to the existing ones in terms of tracking accuracy.
