Methods: In this study, to evaluate the effect on the suppression of obesity, high fat diet-induced obese rats were treating with the drugs, the effects on the balance of energy and diet activity were examined, and the change of weight, the change of the intake of diet, body fat rate, etc. were assessed. Results: The results demonstrate that in high fat diet-induced obese white rats, the combination treatment of ginseng total saponin and coicis was effective in suppression of weight gain, reduction of intake of food, and reduction of body fat. Conclusions: The results suggest that a combination treatment with major components of red ginseng total saponin and coicis may be used therapeutically for the suppression and treatment of obesity.

  • Objectives This study was written to report Korean medicine treatment for obese children. Methods This study included obese children who visited the Department of Korean Pediatrics at the Daejeon Korean Medicine Hospital of Daejeon University from September 18, 2020 to March 30, 2023. Height and weight at the first visit and on the day of the last herbal medicine termination were measured, and changes before and after treatment were observed. Liver function tests were performed before and after the treatment. Results Of the nine obese children who received Korean medicine treatment, five were male (55.6%) and four, female (44.4%). In term of age, there were five 8-year-olds (55.6%), two 6-year-olds, and two 10-year-olds (22.2%); the patients' mean age was 8.00 ± 1.414 years. The treatment period was more than three months, and the average treatment period was 177.11 ± 106.013 days. After treatment with Korean medicine, the patients' heights increased, and the body mass index (BMI) percentile and obesity decreased. Liver levels were maintained within the normal range without abnormal liver function after herbal medicine treatment, and no adverse reactions were observed during Korean medicine treatment. As a result of the pattern identification analysis, gastrointestinal damp-heat type and yin deficiency with internal heat were reported at a high frequency. Conclusions Korean medical treatment can reduce the degree of obesity without hindering the growth of childhood obesity.

  • Objectives : Obesity is a metabolic disease resulted from various causes including nutritional disproportion, hormonal imbalance, and hypothalamic nuclei disorder. Samhwang-tang(Sanhuang-tang, SHT) is composed of 5 herbs (Ephedrae Herba, Scutellariae Radix, Typhae pollen, Acori Rhizoma and Ansu Semen) and is frequently used for obese patients. This study investigated anti-obesity effects of SHT on the rats. Methods : Obesity was induced by high fat diet (HFD), monosodium L-glutamate injection (MSG) and ovariectomy (OVX) in the Sprague-Dawley rats. Water extract of SHT was treated for 2 weeks, then changes of body weight gain and epididymal fat cell size were measured. In OVX animals, c-Fos and neuropeptide Y (NPY) expressions in hypothalamic nuclei were observed with immunohistochemistry. Results : SHT treatment demonstrated significant decrease of body weight gain in obesity induced by HFD and OVX, but not in obesity induced by MSG. SHT treatment demonstrated significant decrease of fat cell size in obesity induced by HFD, but not in obesity induced by MSG. On c-Fos and NPY expressions in hypothalamic nuclei, SHT treatment resulted significant decrease of immuno-reactivity of c-Fos and NPY in obesity induced by OVX. Conclusions : These results suggest that SHT has a weight loss effect against obesity induced by nutritional disproportion of diet intake and hormonal imbalance, especially without central nervous system disorder.

  • Yak-ju treatment is regarded as a new way to give a medication, and used many parts of medical field such as musculo-skeletal, aesthetic and cosmetic part. Recently I've experienced a good result by Yak-ju treatment for managing obese patient who had failed to lose his weight by conventional existing treatments comprised of herbal medicine, electro-lypolysis, negative pressure, ear acupuncture, behavior modification therapy and education for diet and exercise. This method can be recommended as a new method for curing obesity that can make up for the weak point of existing ways.

  • Objectives The purpose of this study was to investigate the progress of weight and waist circumference(WC) through oriental obesity treatment and clarify the correlation between weight loss and WC change. Methods The subjects were treated from January 2007 to September 2009 in J Oriental Medical Center. Herbal medicine, electroacupuncture, oriental obesity physiotherapy were performed for a month. We checked the change of weight and WC at every treatment. We classified the WC into upper, middle, lower parts specifically and measured them individually. Measurements were analyzed by using one-way repeated measures ANOVA and we also investigated correlation between weight loss and WC change. Results (1) During the first and second treatment sessions, the weight loss was the highest, $0.96{\pm}0.86\;kg$($1.46{\pm}1.32\;%$) and during the 5th and 6th treatment sessions, the lowest $0.37{\pm}0.616\;kg$. The final weight loss was $3.71{\pm}1.476\;kg$($5.51{\pm}2.12\;%$). (2) After 8 treatment sessions, the reductions of upper, middle and lower WC were $3.59{\pm}2.26\;%$, $5.93{\pm}2.75\;%$, $5.51{\pm}3.22\;%$, respectively. As the patients received more treatment, there was a progressive decline in the variation of weight and middle WC. However, the decline rate of upper and middle WC fluctuated during the treatments, forming a W-shaped curve. (3) Analysis of the correlation between the weight loss and WC change shows that the reduction of middle WC was most closely associated with the weight loss. Conclusions This study indicated that the rate of weight loss and WC reduction showed stagnation during the 5th and 6th treatment sessions, and the reduction of middle WC was most closely associated with the weight loss. Since the progress of weight and WC change is an important field of research on obesity, further systemic studies would be needed for the foundation of a clinical guideline.

  • Objectives Obesity is one of the most important health problem in modern society and constant studies are still in progress domestically without the effective treatment so far. The objective of this study is to analyze the recent trend of the studies about obesity in oriental medicine and to provide background for further studies. Methods All of the articles in the journal of 'Korean oriental association for study of obesity' were collected published after 2006. Search were conducted through 'http://oasis.kiom.re.kr' and the journal of 'the Korean academy of oriental rehabilitation medicine'(January 2006~October 2010) with the search word "obesity". Collected articles were classified into clinical study, experimental study, literary study, case report. Results Total 177 articles were analysed. The number of studies were increasing until 2008 and went down afterwards. According to the classification by the type of study, percentage of clinical study took 45.2%, experimental study took 31.6%, literary study took 14.7%, case report took 8.5%. Conclusion Domestic clinical studies and experimental studies are conducted more focused on the treatment and diagnosis of obesity. Future study on the obesity should be focused on the prevention in the aspect of public health and social cost.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study is to research domestic and foreign trend of pharmacopuncture treatment on obesity during recent 10 years. Methods: 5 Databases (Korean Studies Information Service System, Research Information Sharing Service, Oriental Medicine Advanced Searching Integrated System, Scopus, PubMed) were searched with keywords of ('pharmacopuncture', 'herbal acupuncture', 'aquapuncture', 'obesity') from 2012 to 2022. Results: 25 Articles were selected and analyzed. 15 articles (60%) were animal experimentations, 8 articles (32%) were case reports, 1 article (4%) was cell experimentation, and 1 article (4%) was clinical trial. In this study, 25 articles were analyzed by subject, acupoints, injections, metrics and results. Pharmacopuncture treatment for obesity is continuously being studied, and the anti-inflammatory effect as well as the effect of reducing obesity factors has been revealed. Conclusions: This study suggests the efficacy and future development of pharmacopuncture for obesity. The studies of the past decade have been concentrated on animal experiments, so many clinical trials and various studies on new complex pharmacopuncture for obesity are expected.
