  • This study was done to compare the effects of managing obesity using a behavior modification program and an aerobic exercise in adolescent girls. Thirty three subjects were selected from one girls' middle school located in Seoul. Seventeen girls participated in the behavior modification program by joining 60-90 minute group sessions weekly. The aerobic exercise program was given to 16 girls three times per week for 60 minutes each. These iterventions continued for eight weeks from October 17 to December 10, 1995. The data were obtained before and after the interventions by measuring degree of obesity, body weight, blood pressure, serum lipid, %body fat, and waist to hip ratio(WHR). Data ware analysed by using paired t-test. The results are as follows. 1. Subjects in both the behavior modification and the aerobic exercise groups showed significant decrese in the degree of obesity, body weight, diastolic blood pressure, total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein, %body fat and fat mass after the 8-week interventions. 2. Systolic bood pressure, high density lipoprotein cholesterol and waist to hip ratio were significantly decreased after the 8-week intervention in the behavior modification program group while triglyceride was significantly decreased after the 8-week intervention in the aerobic exercise program group. These findings indicate that both behavior modification and aerobic exercise programs are good strategies for managing obesity among adolescent girls.

  • Traditionally, fathers have been a bread earner and responsible for external matters as the head of household. However, the interest of today's fathers in their children has changed from that of the traditional fathers due to the increased employment of female, decreased birth rate and the trend of shared role in parenting. The purpose of this study was to identify the perception type of fathers of preschool children regarding obesity and the characteristics of the type by applying Q-methodology, and to create the basic data for the development of education programs for fathers or policy-making to prevent child obesity. Data were collected by applying 38 Q statements to 24 fathers of preschool children. Collected data were analyzed with the PC QUANL program. Results indicate that fathers' perception of obesity was divided into three types: 'management of physical activity and diet,' 'generous acknowledgment of reality' and 'compromised emphasis on homemade meal.' The 'compromised emphasis on homemade meal' type is those who consider homemade food important, although they sometimes suggest conditions to make their children cooperative for food. It was found that the subject of the study uniformly recognized that processed foods, fast foods or chocolates are harmful to health. The type of fathers' perception of obesity in preschool children was discussed, focusing on the perception type identified in this study.

  • Objectives: This study was conducted to compare health behavior between obese children and those with standard body weight, analyzing the correlation in their health behavior, and further making it useful data for the development of programs for a better education on health. Methods: To achieve the goal of this survey as mentioned, we have carried out a research targeting on a total of 636 elementary school students, 505 children of standard body weight and 131 children of obesity, all of whom belong to elementary school students in Seoul, the capital city of Korea. And we have itemized the research into 'eating habits', 'physical activity, 'dieting experience in the past', and 'stress and release management' in order to spot the specific health behavior leading to obesity. Results: 1. Factors for diseases mainly from obesity were statistically significantly differentdepending on degree of the subjects' self-respect and a history of obesity in their families, father($x^2$=7.172, p=.007), mother($x^2$=9.011, p=.003), and siblings($x^2$=12.431, p=.000). 2. Regarding the subjects' eating habits, some items were statistically significantly different: taking algae($x^2$=3.324, p=.043), eating breakfast($x^2$=6.070, p=.010), and eating fast($x^2$=8.551, p=.002). 3. There were some statistically significant differences in the subjects' dieting experience. For the latest 1 year, they made some attempts for that: fasting($x^2$=4.229, p=.040), reduction of eating($x^2$=25.377, p=.000), eating one meal a day($x^2$=5.582, p=.018) 4. OR(Odd Ratio)of Percieued obesity was 0.15 in the subjects' under weight than normal weight. And there was OR(Odd Ratio) 11.72 in the subjects' over weight. We can witness obese children think that they are over weight(p=.000).

  • To find out more efficient ways of implementing health promotion programs and to determine the factors affecting the results of various interventions, we reviewed 73 articles un the effectiveness of health promotion programs. These include the papers on the smoking, alcohol, drug abuse, nutrition(obesity) and stress management etc. Specific interventions evaluated in this review are education based on the lecture or video shows, health-related event activities, modifications of policy or the environment, health risk appraisal etc. By using KIHASA Line of Korea Institute of Health and Social Affairs, National Congress Library Database MEDLINE, we identified 201 articles published from 1980 to Jun. 1979 and finally selected 73 papers which contain the implementation process, and result of each program. The factors used in the analysis of the programs are (1) characteristics of participants (2) interventions evaluated (3) research design (4) length of programs and evacuation point (7) outcome indices (6) effect of program evaluated by each author. The study results did not prove positive effect of education based on lectures or video shows etc. Rather, it was suggested that lecture-based education has negative effect on the result. Event activity such as contest or health festivals has positive effect, and policy change or environmental change is closely related to the event activity. Also, the result shows that the overall effect of programs fur the students is less than that of the programs for the others. The programs conducted over, 1-year are mere likely to have positive outcomes than shorter ones. And, the outcomes of the programs with controlled research design such as experimental or quasi-experimental study tend to be evaluated inferiorly to those with non-experimental design.

  • Purpose : The purpose of this study was to find out how changes in body shape of obese patients could be affected by the combined management of diet and psychotherapy along with exercise therapy to control energy imbalance, the cause of obesity. Methods : In this study, the aerobic exercise program was conducted on 12 industrial workers of "D" company for a total of eight weeks for obese patients with a high body mass index (25 kg/㎡ or higher). The experimental group did not apply the program three times a week. The body type analysis was carried out using the body analyzer (Inbody 770, Inbody, Korea) and blood test and psychological test were performed after 8 weeks of exercise before and after exercise. Results : The results of the group showed a change in weight loss of 6.03 kg (p=.000) on average, which is nearly 10 % of the change in weight. It was also shown that the BMI (body mass index) decreased by 1.76 kg/㎡ (p=.000). Abdominal fat (AO) is also 0.14 % (p=.000), waist circumference (WC, 12.72 cm, p=.000), internal fat (VF, 25.12 %, p=.000), liver function levels AST (5.47 U/L, p=.04), ALT (13.64 U/L, p=.000), total cholesterol, pTC -14.22. Conclusion : Based on the results of this study, the obesity management program will be able to maximize the effects of obesity control if exercise programs and psychotherapy are combined.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to estimate obesity rate among mentally disabled children in six public schools in Korea. Furthermore, this study identified several factors that correlated with these children's obesity. The results of this study can help identify mentally disabled children who are at an increased risk for obesity and can be used to promote good health in this population. Methods: 1,102 subjectsfrom six public special schools were classified 4 groups who assessed for BMI for age-gender specific reference chart(1998) based on our previous data. Moreover, 207 parents were surveyed to identify predisposing factors for children's obesity, including characteristics of the children and parents, socioeconomic factors, children's eating habits, and children's exercise habits. Results: The prevalence of obesity among the 1,102 mentally disabled children was 17.3%. There was a statistically significant correlation between obesity and factors, such as age, maternal education, parents' perceptions about their child's obesity, frequency of breakfast, and exercise habits. Each of these factors was determined to have a statistically significant influence on obesity when all other factors were controlled in a multivariate analysis with multiple logistic regression analysis. Conclusions: Parental perceptions had an especially strong impact on the weight of their mentally disabled child. This is presumably due to the great influence that parents have on the lifestyles of their children, including dietary habits and frequency of exercise. Furthermore, the rate of obesity was directly proportional to the age of the child. The results of this study strongly indicate the need for preemptive health education programs that stress weight management for mentally disabled elementary school students.

  • Purpose: This study was aimed to identify the difference of the self-efficacy and the health promoting behaviors between obese and normal-weight middle school students. Method: Data were collected from a convenient sample of 360 middle school students (180 normal-weight students and 180 obese students) in Pusan from November 22nd to December 20th. 2000. based on self-report questionnaires. The following instruments were used in the study after being reconstructed by the researcher with the consultation of experts and the literature review: General Self Efficacy Scale(Sherer et al.. 1982). and Health Promoting Lifestyle Profile (Walker. Sechrist & Pender. 1987). The data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, chi-square test. and t-test and Pearson's correlation coefficient. Results: 1. There were significant differences in father's obesity (p=.014) mother's obesity (p= .007), sibling's obesity (p=.00l), and school record (p=.001) between obese and normal-weight students. 2. There were statistically significant differences in the score of self-efficacy between the obese and normal-weight students (p=.0001) 3. There were statistically significant differences in health promoting behavior (p= .000) and in six sub-i terns: personal relationship (p =.000), exercise (p=.001), responsibility for health (p=.003), stress management (p = .015), self-actualization (p =.043) between the obese and normal weight students. 4. There were very statistically significant negative correlations between obesity and the self-efficacy (r=-.19. p<.001), health promoting behavior (r=-.18. p<.001), specifically personal relationship(r=-.20. p<.001), stress management (r=-.12. p<.05), responsibility for health (r=-.15. p<.01), and self-actualization (r=-.14. p<.01). Conclusion: According to the above results it is concluded that self-efficacy and health promoting behavior influence the obesity of middle school students. Therefore I recommend adding programs that can lead to improve self-efficacy and health promoting behavior to the obesity prevention programs for middle school students.

  • In order to develop an obesity management program for teenagers, we compared obese and non-obese girls attending high schools in terms of their dietary practices related to snack consumption. Dietary records were collected for 7 days. No significant differences were found for the average daily energy intake between obese and non-obese girls. However, the highest energy intake was greater for obese girls while not much difference was found for the lowest amount of energy intake. Obese girls had significantly lower intakes in calcium (P < 0.01), vitamin A (P < 0.001) and folate (P < 0.01). Mean energy intake from snack ($594.1{\pm}312.1kcal$) was significantly higher for obese girls than for non-obese girls ($360.1{\pm}173.1kcal$) (P < 0.001). A significant, positive correlation was observed between energy intake from snack and total daily energy intake (r = 0.34 P < 0.01) only for obese girls. In case of dietary behaviors, obese adolescent girls consumed significantly greater number of items for snacks and fewer foods for regular meals compared to non-obese girls (P < 0.05). This study suggested that obesity management programs for adolescents should focus on providing strategies to reduce snack through enhancing balanced regular meals.
