고지방 식이를 섭취시킨 흰쥐에서 고추장의 항비만효과 (Anti-obesity Effects of Kochujang in Rats Fed on a High-fat Diet)

  • The purpose of the present study was to investigate effects of kochujang and red pepper on energy intake, body fat content and energy expenditure in rats fed on high-fat(30%) diet. Kochujang and red pepper power were added in the high-fat diet, adjusting the level to 95 and 22g/kg diet, respectively, The level of red pepper addition was corresponding was corresponding to the level of the content of red pepper powder in the kichujang-added diet. Kochujang induced a 30% reduction in body fat gain which was associated with a significant increase in energy expenditure. However, red pepper reduced body fat gain by only 15%. Furthermore, energy expenditure was not affected by red pepper. Metabolizable energy intake, apparent digestibility and body protein gain were not affected by either kochujang or red pepper. It has been known that capsaicin, a pungent component of red pepper, enhances activity of brown adipose tissue through increasing protein content. In the present study, in addition of protein content, DNA content of interscapular brown adipose tissue was also increased by kochujang. Therefore, it appeared that the anti-obesity effects of kochujang was greater than those of red pepper, indicating more than red pepper was involved in the expression of the anti-obesity effects of kochujang(Korean J Nutrition 33(8) : 787-793, 2000)

  • Atopic dermatitis (AD) is usually caused by foods such as wheat, egg, milk, and peanuts, leading to common health problems in early childhood with complications like urtication. The aim of this study was to evaluate ethanol extracts of rice and rice snacks concentrated until the ethanol was completely eliminated and hot-air dried. In vitro analyses were carried out using murine macrophage RAW 264.7 cells. We measured cytotoxicity, nitric oxide (NO) production, and inflammatory cytokine level. The NO level of the cells exposed to lipopolysaccharide (LPS) was significantly reduced by rice and rice snack extracts. $TNF-{\alpha}$ level decreased in contrast to the LPS group, although a significant difference was not observed. On the other hand, IL-6 significantly decreased in both rice and rice snack extracts in a dose-dependent manner. The results of the present study suggest that rice and rice snack decreased NO and inflammatory cytokine levels. Therefore, rice could be useful as a raw material for relieving child atopic dermatitis caused by snacks made from wheat.

Obesity Related Adipokines and Colorectal Cancer: A Review and Meta-Analysis

  • Obesity has been considered as an important risk factor for the development of colorectal cancer (CRC), but the association has not been fully elucidated. Obesity is linked significantly to adipose tissue dysfunction and to alteration of adipokines in blood; in particular, obesity-induced inflammation is thought to be an important link between obesity and colorectal cancer. Based on epidemiological studies, we undertook a systematic review to understand the association of circulating levels of selected adipokines, including adiponectin, leptin, resistin, IL-6 and TNF-${\alpha}$, with the level of CRC risk. Most prospective studies suggested protective effects of adiponectin, but these were attenuated by body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC) data in our meta-analysis. On the other hand, meta-analyses for leptin and CRC did not demonstrate any association, similar to the results of systematic review. Although it proved difficult to determine whether other selected adipokines (resistin, IL-6 and TNF-${\alpha}$) were related to CRC risk due to small number of reports, the present systematic review suggested a positive association with elevated resistin levels but null associations with IL-6 and TNF-${\alpha}$.

  • Effects of Ryangkeogsanwhatang on the obesity of white mouse induced by gold thioglucose. It is researched to elucidate the effect of Ryangkeogsanwhatang on the obesity of white mouse induced by gold thioglucose and the differentiation and growth of preadipocyte, 3T3-L1. The result were as follows. 1. Ryangkeogsanwhatang extract improved the blood level of transaminase changed by the obesity of white mouse induced by gold thioglucose. 2. Ryangkeogsanwhatang extract inhibited the increase of liver fat and body fat induced by the obesity of white mouse induced by gold thioglucose. 3. Ryangkeogsanwhatang extract inhibited the increase of body weight induced by the obesity of white mouse induced by gold thioglucose. 4. Ryangkeogsanwhatang extract inhibited the growth of undifferentiate preadipocyte 3T3-L1. 5. Ryangkeogsanwhatang extract showed inhibitory on the differentiation of preadipocyte 3T3-L1. The above results suggest that the Ryangkeogsanwhatang extract may be used on the obesity induced by the overgrowth and differentiation of adipocyte, and the accumulation of fat in liver and body.

초등학생의 비만도와 영양소섭취상태가 혈청 IGF-1과 Serotonin 농도에 미치는 영향 (The Effect of Obesity and Nutrient intake on Serum IGF-1 and Serotonin Levels in School Children)

  • To evaluate the role of obesity and nutrient intake on serum IGF-1 and serotonin levels in 80 elementary school children (aged 10. 8 yr, 47 boys, 33 girls), we investigated the anthropometric data and the nutrient intake by questionnaries including food daily record, and measured serum IGF-1 and serotonin using RIA and HPLC F-1050 respectively. We obtained the following results by obesity index (underweight-, normal-, obese group). The protein intake of normal group was higher than the others (p < 0.05). The underweight and obese groups had snacks more often than the normal group. The obese group preferred‘cookies’and‘fries’more than the other groups. The serum serotonin levels showed weak correlation with fat (r = 0.315, p < 0.01), fiber (${\gamma}$ = 0.280, p < 0.05) and energy intake (r = 0.242, p < 0.05), but no differences in anthropometric data by obesity index. The serum IGF-1 level was significantly correlated height (r = 0.649, p < 0.001), weight (r = 0.437, p < 0.001) and hip (r = 0.417, p < 0.001), but showed weak correlation with energy intake (r = 0.232, p < 0.05) and carbohydrate intake (r = 0.244, p < 0.05). In this study, we could see only partly correlation among the serum IGF-1 and serotonin and obesity and nutrient intake. Forker research is required into consideration of the essential role of these hormones during a growth period.

갈근이 비만 랫드 간조직의 비만관련 유전자 발현에 미치는 영향 (The effects of Pueraria lobata extract on gene expression in liver tissue of rat with estrogen-deficient obesity)

  • Objective : It is known that Pueriaria lobata has an anti-osteoporetic effect, anti-cancer effect, anti-pyretic effect, and anti-diabetic effect. The aim of this study was to evaluate anti-obesity effect of Pueriaria lobata extract (PLE), and elucidate the effect of it on gene expression related to lipid metabolism. Method : The experiments were performed with the use of ovariectomized rats as estrogen-deficient obesity model. They were grouped NC (normal control), OC (estrogen-deficient control), PLH (100mg/kg of PLE), PLL (20mg/kg). PLE was orally administered for 6 weeks. Body weights and serum lipid level were estimated, and real-time PCR was performed to investigate the effect of PLE on gene expression in liver. Results : PLE decreased the body weight and serum cholesterol and triglyceride, but increased HDL-cholesterol. And PLE increased leptin, CYP27, CPT1, CYP8B1, ACAT2, LDLR, and SCD1, but reduced $PPAR{\gamma}$, PGC1A, HMG-CoA-R, ACAT1, SCD1, and APoB gene expression in liver tissue of rat with estrogen-deficient obesity. Conclusion : It is concluded that Pueriaria lobata reduced body weight, and its effect was expressed by regulation of gene expression related to lipid metabolism in rats with estrogen-deficient obesity.

경남지역 중학생의 체형에 따른 식생활태도, 식이자기효능감 및 영양소 섭취상태에 관한 연구 (A Study of the Dietary Attitude, Dietary Self-Efficacy and Nutrient Intake among Middle School Students with Different Obesity Indices in Gyeong-Nam)

  • This study was carried out to investigate the perception of body image, the dietary attitude, the nutrient intake and the dietary self-efficacy of middle school students in Kyoung-Nam. The survey was conducted from April 8 to April 22 in 2002. The results are summarized as follows. Twenty three point nine percents of the underweight group,24.5% of the normal weight group, 57.1% of the overweight group and 62.5% of the obese group had correct perception about their body image. Most of the students were concerned about their body image and weight control. The obesity of the parents correlated significantly with the obesity of the subjects. The higher the obesity rate, the lower the dietary attitude and dietary self-efficacy. There was a significant positive correlation between the education level of their mothers and the dietary attitude of the subjects and a significant negative correlation between the obesity rate of the subjects and their. dietary attitudes. Dietary attitude scores showed no significant difference among the groups. Intakes of calories, protein, calcium and iron were lower than those of the Korean recommended dietary allowances (RDAs). 조위승청탕(調胃升淸湯)의 비만 및 대사성 질환에 대한 연구동향 분석: 국내 학술지를 중심으로 (Analysis of Research Trend about Jowiseungcheong-tang (Diàowèishēngqīng-tāng) for Treating Obesity and Metabolic Disease: Focused on Domestic Journals)

  • Objectives The purpose of this research is to comprehensively analyze about Jowiseungcheong-tang (Diàowèishēngqīng-tāng). This herbal medicine is widely used to treat obesity and metabolic disease. Methods We used 3 search terms, 'Jowiseungcheong-tang', 'Jowiseungcheong-tang plus obesity' and 'Jowiseungcheong-tang plus metabolic disease' in Korean word via 5 domestic databases. Therefore, 8 laboratory experiments and 4 clinical researches were chosen. Results Jowiseungcheong-tang (Diàowèishēngqīng-tāng) was identified as a herbal medicine for obesity and related metabolic disease. In plasma level of lipid, leptin, inflammatory material were decreased in laboratory experiments. Weight loss and symptom relief were reported in clinical research. Conclusions Definite information about laboratory experiment was showed, specifically suitable index and numerical value. In clinical research, although Jowiseungcheong-tang (Diàowèishēngqīng-tāng) is widely used for obesity and metabolic disease, the number of reported thesis and patient were pretty a few. Also, diagnosis methods were also scanty. Multi-institutional clinical trial should be progressed.

어머니의 영양지식에 따른 유아기 자녀의 비만도 및 식습관의 차이 (Mothers' Nutrition Knowledge and Their Preschoolers' Obesity and Dietary Habits)

  • The principal objective of this study was to determine the effects of mothers' nutrition knowledge on preschoolers' obesity and dietary habits. The subject population included 456 mothers and their preschoolers, aged 3 to 5 years, who were enrolling in kindergartens located in Seoul and KyongGi-Do, Korea. The results of this study are as follows: 1. The majority of mothers responded correctly to those questions concerning obesity-related nutritional knowledge, but responded incorrectly to questions regarding basic nutritional knowledge. 2. The mothers' nutritional knowledge was associated significantly with the mother's age (p<0.05) and degree of education (p<0.05). 3. The mothers' nutritional knowledge was significantly and negatively correlated with their obesity, but not with their preschoolers' obesity. 4. Mothers' nutritional knowledge was determined to be positively associated with higher interest in nutritional information and food selection in regard to weight management strategies for their kids. 5. In general, preschoolers whose mother had excellent nutrition knowledge evidenced better dietary habits than preschoolers whose mothers had poor nutrition knowledge. In particular, one question regarding serving size was significantly associated with mothers' general level of nutritional knowledge(p<0.05).
