  • This study was conducted to select proper substrate and nutrient solution concentration for favorable growth and quality in common thyme (Thymus vulgaris L.). The growth of common thyme was better in deep flow culture (DFT) than in other substrate cultures. As the nutrient solution concentration rose, the ratio of dry matter increased, while the fresh weight and the number of lateral shoots decreased. The contents of total chlorophyll and vitamin C were higher in DFT than others. Ca, K, P were showed high contents in cocopeat, but Mg content was the highest at half-fold concentration in DFT. Common thyme showed low content of nitrate in DFT compared with that in other substrate culture. DFT was the most effective system for pronoting growth and quality of common thyme. The optimal concentration of nutrient solution in common thyme was half-fold(EC=1.2mS/cm) of herbs nutrient solution by European Vegetable R&D Center.

  • This experiment was conducted to find out optimum substrate and concentration of nutrient solution for mass production of sweet basil by pot culture. Growth depending on concentration of nutrient solution was different to some extent; the growth of plants was usually better in one-fold and two-fold concentration of nutrient solution but three-fold one was poor. Plants grown in cocopeat showed better growth, but peatmoss gave an adverse effect. Sweet basil grown in substrate mixed with cocopeat and perlite (1:1, v:v) was highest in essential oil content. After all, cultural practice by one-fold concentration of herb nutrient solution in substrate mixed with cocopeat and perlite (1:1, v:v) was recommended for better growth and higher essential oil content of sweet basil.

  • Chinese white cabbage, Chinese flat cabbage, lettuce, garland chrysanthemum, and green perilla were grown in nutrient solution culture to investigate the effects of various media and nutrient solutions. The culture media were sand, mixed substrate(peatmoss : sand= 1 : 1), and non-media(deep-flow culture). The nutrient solutions were Cooper's, Hoagland's, and Yamazaki's solution. Plants were grown under different treatments for three weeks. Generally, the growth was greatest in non-media culture and followed mixed substrate culture, and poorest in sand culture. In non-media culture, the growth of Chinese white cabbage, Chinese flat cabbage, lettuce, and green perilla was good in Yamazaki's solution. And regardless of nutrient solution, garland chrysanthemum was good in non-media culture. Relative chlorophyll was not different among the treatments.

  • The measurement of total fresh weight of plants provides an essential indicator of crop growth for monitoring production. To measure fresh weight without damaging the vegetation, image-based methods have been developed, but they have limitations. In addition, the total plant fresh weight is difficult to measure directly in hydroponic cultivation systems because of the amount of nutrient solution. This study aimed to develop a real-time, precise method to measure the total fresh weight of Romaine lettuce (Lactuca sativa L. cv. Asia Heuk Romaine) with growth stage in a plant factory using a nutrient film technique. The total weight of the channel, amount of residual nutrient solution in the channel, and fresh shoot and root weights of the plants were measured every 7 days after transplanting. The initial weight of the channel during nutrient solution supply (Wi) and its weight change per second just after the nutrient solution supply stopped were also measured. When no more draining occurred, the final weight of the channel (Ws) and the amount of residual nutrient solution in the channel were measured. The time constant (${\tau}$) was calculated by considering the transient values of Wi and Ws. The relationship of Wi, Ws, ${\tau}$, and fresh weight was quantitatively analyzed. After the nutrient solution supply stopped, the change in the channel weight exponentially decreased. The nutrient solution in the channel slowly drained as the root weight in the channel increased. Large differences were observed between the actual fresh weight of the plant and the predicted value because the channel included residual nutrient solution. These differences were difficult to predict with growth stage but a model with the time constant showed the highest accuracy. The real-time fresh weight could be calculated from Wi, Ws, and ${\tau}$ with growth stage.

  • This study was carried out to provide primary data set for cleaning of contamination site. By having hydroponic culture on Salix alba and S. caprea seedling treated with Ni solution, the result of Ni accumulation came out as followings : In a treatment of Ni to the Salix alba and S. caprea, Ni accumulation increased in its root, leaves, and stem, as Ni concentration became higher until $10.0{\mu}mol$. But in a $100.0{\mu}mol$ treatment, the seedlings died after 4 weeks. Ni accumulation in the Salix alba and S. caprea was the highest in its roots, second-highest in leaves, and the lowest in stems. In the case of $10.0{\mu}mol$ treatment of Ni solution, Ni accumulation in roots were above 500.0mg/L, and leaves were above 20.0mg/L. But it was lower than 13.0mg/L in stems. Ni accumulation in the plant increased more when nutrient solution containing Ni was weekly changed than just refilling the same amount of nutrient solution that evaporated Ni accumulation in Salix alba was higher than S. caprea when the nutrient solution had been refilled only.

  • The amounts and nutrient compositions in precipitation, throughfall, stemflow and soil solution of natural deciduous forests (Quercus variabilis and Q. mongolica) were examined in Gwangju, Gyeonggi Province. The proportion to gross precipitation was $85\%$ for throughfall, $2-6\%$ for stem flow, $53-54\%$ for Ao horizon soil solution, $23-30\%$ for A horizon soil solution, and $11-14\%$$ for B horizon soil solution, respectively. pH and K concentration increased in throughfall and only K concentration increased in stemflow. Canopy leaching appeared to influence these changes. pH, and Ca and Mg concentrations increased significantly in the Ao horizon soil solution, and Ca concentration was higher in the B horizon than in the A horizon. However, there were no significant differences in pH and other nutrient concentrations between A and B horizons. Litter decomposition and leaching from Ao horizon might explain the changes. K, Mg and Cl concentrations in throughfall and soil solution decreased with precipitation. Nutrient contents increased in the transports from precipitation, through throughfall, to Ao horizon soil solution, while they decreased in the transport from A to B horizon soil solution. Stemflow contained less than $10\%$ of total (throughfall plus stemflow) nutrient contents.

  • The main objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of nutrient solutions, substrates, and nutrient solution concentrations in substrate culture of radish(Raphanus sativus L. var. sativus). Cooper's, Hoagland & Arnon' 5, and Yamazaki's solution were used to determine the most suitable nutrient solution in deep flow culture(DFC). In result, Yamazaki's solution treatment showed better results than Hoagland's and Cooper's solution treatments in leaf length, leaf number, shoot and root fresh weights. Cooper's solution was much worse than others. Root shape index were low as 0.6 in all treatments. The selection of suitable was conducted among 14 kinds of substrates which were used commercially, such as sand, perlite and peatmoss, in substrates culture. Sand was the most proper in radish growth and shortened the growth periods. Sand also showed better results then others in leaf length, leaf number, shoot and root fresh weight. On the contrary, radish growth in peatmoss was the worst. Generally, root shape index was higher in substrate than in DFC. In order to investigate the suitable ionic strength in radish, Yamazaki's solution was treated with EC of 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 mS/cm. Generally radish growth above 1.0 mS/cm concentration was good, and the best result was shown in 1.5 mS/cm. Vitamin C contents were not significantly different in the roots of radish grown under 1.0 mS/cm or more. The highest vitamin C content was shown in 0.5 mS/cm, and so was thiocyanate content. Anthocyanin contents increased with the increase of the ionic strength in nutrient solution. Mineral nutrient contents had no significant statistical differences between the treatments, but potassium content was remarkably high in 1.5 mS/cm.

  • This experiment was conducted to find out the effect of nutrient solution composition on the growth of cucumber plants and the changes in macro-elements in nutrient solutions in recirculating hydroponic systems. Cucumber plants (Cucumis sativus L. cv. Joeun Baegdadagi) were grown in closed perlite cultivation systems supplied with different nutrient solutions developed by NHRS (National Horticultural Research Station in Japan), Yamasaki, PBG (Proefstation voor Bloemisterij en Glasgroente), and NIHHS (National Institute of Horticultural and Herbal Science in Korea). The concentrations of $NO_{3^-}N$, $Ca^{2+}$, $Mg^{2+}$, and $SO_{4^-}S$ in the recycled nutrient solutions increased but that of $NH_{4^-}N$ decreased gradually in all the treatments. The $PO_{4^-}P$ and $K^+$ concentrations were continuously reduced from the beginning of the harvest to the harvest peak period. There were no significant differences in the concentrations of $NO_{3^-}N$, $NH_{4^-}N$, and $Ca^{2+}$ in the recirculated nutrient solutions among four treatments, while the concentrations of $PO_{4^-}P$ and $K^+$ were lowest and those of $Mg^{2+}$ and $SO_{4^-}S$ were highest in the treatment of Yamasaki's nutrient solution. All growth-related parameters of cucumber plants except for leaf number were not significantly affected by the nutrient solution compositions. Due to its low concentrations of $PO_{4^-}P$ and $K^+$ in the recycled nutrient solution, however, the number and yield of cucumber fruits were lowest in the treatment of Yamasaki's nutrient solution.

  • We examined the effect of nutrient solution concentration in the second half of growing period on the pre- and postharvest characteristics of two leaf lettuce cultivars, 'Geokchima' and 'Cheongchima'. Plants were grown hydroponically in a deep flow technique (DFT) system at different concentrations of National Horticulture Research Institute hydroponic nutrient solution: 1/2 strength (S), 1S, 2S, and 4S. Lettuce leaf growth, number of leaves, and shoot fresh weight of both cultivars were greatest in plants grown in the 1S treatment. Compared to other treatments, pigment and nutrient ion contents were greater in the 4S treatment. Growth of lettuce was greatest in the 1S treatment, and decreased at higher or lower concentrations of nutrient solution. However, postharvest characteristics such as fresh weight loss, leaf chlorophyll level, and external appearance were better in both cultivars when grown in 2S solution. Variations in weight loss and SPAD values were smallest in the 2S treatment. These results show that the optimal nutrient concentration for growth does not necessarily provide the optimal postharvest storability.

  • This study was conducted to develop a nutrient uptake model in cucumnber (Cucumis sativus L. cv. Eunsung Backdadagi) plants for prediction of the amount of nutrients in drainage solution in a closed perlite culture system. Electrical conductivity (EC) of the nutrient solution was adjusted to 1.5, 1.8, 2.1, 2.4, and 2.7 dS. $m^{-1}$ . The amount of nutrient solution absorbed in different EC treatments was not different until the mid stage of growth. However, after the mid growth stage, a high EC treatment resulted in less solution absorption. The absorption rates of K, N $O_3$$^{[-10]}$ -N, Mg, and P increased continuously for a whole growing period in all treatments, while those of Ca decreased slightly. For S, the decrease was significant after th mid stage of growth. although the amounts of absorbed inorganic ions in different EC treatments were not significantly different at the first stage of growth, they were significantly different after the mid stage of growth and decreased slightly at the end of growth stage. Models for predicting the amounts of each inorganic ion absorbed were developed by using EC and the amount of nutrient solution absorbed per unit radiation(mg.M $J^{-1}$), which proved to be practical with a positive correlation at 1 percent probability between the developed model and practical values..
