The effects of municipal sewage treatment plants on the water quality and effluent loading were investigated. BOD removal rates from Wonju, Hoengseong, and Hongcheon municipal sewage treatment plants were $88.9\%,\;80.6\%,\;90.7\%$ and T-P removal rates were $47.3\%,\;56.5\%,\;71.6\%,$ respectively. Also, BOD effluent leading from WonJu, Hoengseong, and Hongcheon treatment plants were 1,520 kg/day, 75 kg/day, 55 kg/day and T-P effluent loading were 203.9 kg/day, 4.2 kg/day, 4.0 kg/day, respectively. In terms of water quality distribution by distance of flow, BOD of the Seom river rapidly rose from 1.6 mg/l to 4.0 mg/l and T-P rose from 0.034 mg/l to 0.321 mg/l. Also BOD of the Hongcheon river showed a slowly rise from 1.1 mg/l to 1.4 mg/l and T-P from 0.011 mg/l to 0.026 mg/l. In conclusion, the effects of municipal sewage treatment plants on the water quality proved that T-P was higher than BOD. Consequently, in order to improve water quality, it is necessary to adopt an advanced sewage treatment system like nutrient removal.

We investigated water quality, salinity, nutrients, SS, COD and Chlorophyll-a concentrations in the seawater of the Mokpo costal area, southwestern coast of Korea. Seawater samples at 25 stations were collected in July 20, 25 and September 3, 2002 after a strong rain event. The distributions nutrients in seawater were analyzed using an method of sea water analysis presented by the ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries of Korea. The sampling sites were categorized into the inner and outer harbour based on salinity distribution and difference of nutrients distributions was evidence between these two zones. Nutrients and SS inflow and distributed in the inner harbour by the discharged freshwater from Youngsan river during strong rainfall whereas they were distributed in seawater of outer harbour by natural processes in general coastal area.
This study was carried out to examine the effects of alcohol on serum lipid levels. Subjects of this study were 50 military officers living in Honsung, Korea, 25 of whom consumed alcohol on a regular basis and 25 of whom did not. All subjects were previously informed of the purpose of the study and the methods of food intake reporting and blood testing. The age distribution range of subjects was 30-49 years. Weight, height, and body mass index(BMI) were not significantly different between the two groups. Blood pressure was compared, and it was found that the drinker group had mean systolic(SBP) and diastolic blood pressures(DBP) 10mmHg higher than the non-drinker group. Nutrient intake levels of the two groups were not significantly different and were adequate with respect to the recommended dietary allowances. It was found that the drinker group ingested more calories, protein, fat and vitamn B1 than the non-drinker group, while the non-drinker group ingested more carbohydrate, calcium, iron, vitamin A, niacin and ascorbic acid. These differences were believed caused by increased caloric intake from alcohol and additional intake of meat served with drinks for the drinking group. Fourteen of the twenty-five drinkers(56%) had drank regularly for five to ten years. Most drinkers drank 2-3 times per week, with alcohol intake less than two bottles(720ml)of distilled liquor(Soju) at a time. Meat was often served with alcohol as reported by 72% of the drinker group, and was believed to contribute to raised intake of calories, protein and fat in this group. Serum lipid levels of both groups were classified as normal, but the components of total cholesterol, triglycerides were significantly higher in drinkers than non-drinkers. The correlation between triglyceride levels and alcohol intake at one sitting was shown to be significantly positive(r=0.57, p<0.01), so it was believed that triglyceride elevation was associated more with heavy drinking than light drinking. We can conclude that if alcohol is consumed with a normal diet, then serum cholesterol, triglyceride and total lipid levels are expected to increase.
In the present work , the transport mechanism of a capsaicin derivative, DA-5018, through blood-brain barrier (BBB) has been investigated to evaluate the feasibility of potential drug development. The result of pharmacokinetic parameters obtained from the intravenous injection of plasma volume marker,$[3^H]RSA$ and $[{14}^C]DA-5018$, indicated that both AUC, area under the plasma concentration curve and VD, volume of distribution in brain of $[3^H]RSA$ agreed with those reported ($1620{\pm}10 $percentage injected dose minute per milliliter (%IDmin/ml) and $12.0{\pm}0.1{\mu}l/g$, respectively). Elimination half-life and AUC of $[{14}^C]DA-5018$is corrected by the PHLC analysis, 19.6$\pm$1.2 min and 7.69$\pm$0.85% IDmin/ml, respectively. The metabolic rate of $[{14}^C]DA-5018$was very rapid. The blood-brain barrier permeability surface area (PS) product of $[{14}^C]DA-5018$ was calculated to be 0.24$\pm$0.05 $\mu$l/min/g. The result of internal carotid artery perfusion and capillary depletion suggested that [14C]DA-5018 pass through BBB with the time increasingly. Investigation of transport mechanism of $[{14}^C]DA-5018$ using agonist and antagonist suggested that vanilloid (capsaicin) receptor did not exist in the BBB, and nutrient carrier system in the BBB has no effect on the transport of DA-5018. In conclusion, despite the fact that penetration of DA-5018 through BBB is significant, the intact drug found in the brain tissue is small because of a rapid metabolism. Therefore, for the central analgesic effect of DA-5018, the method to increase the metabolic stability in plasma and the brain permeability should be considered.
Objectives: This study evaluated dietary intakes of total fat and fatty acids among the Korean adult population. Methods: This cross-sectional study used the 2016-2017 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data. A total of 10,772 subjects aged ${\geq}19y$ for which dietary data were available were selected. Data pertaining to energy and nutrient intakes were obtained by a 24-h recall method. Total fat and fatty acids intakes were evaluated based on the Acceptable Macronutrient Distribution Ranges (AMDR) of 2015 Dietary Reference Intakes for Koreans by sex and age groups. All statistical analyses accounted for the complex sampling design effect and sampling weights. Results: The mean intakes of energy and total fat were 1,952 kcal (95% CI: 1928-1977) and 46.1 g (45.2-47.1), respectively, and about 21% of the energy was obtained from fat in this study population (21.7% in men and 20.2% in women). The mean percentages of energy from saturated, monounsaturated, and polyunsaturated fatty acids were 6.4%, 6.7%, and 5.2%, respectively. About 18% of adults exceeded the AMDR for fat (30% of energy), whereas 37.6% exceeded the AMDR for saturated fatty acids (7% of energy). The proportions of subjects who consumed more than the AMDR for fat and saturated fatty acids decreased across age groups in both sexes. Among young adults (19-29 y), about 63% of the subjects obtained ${\geq}7%$ of their energy from saturated fatty acids. About 61% of older adults obtained less than 15% of their energy from total fat. Conclusions: Increased intake of fat energy was prominent in saturated fatty acids. Our findings suggest current information on total fat and fatty acids intakes in Korean adults and can be used to provide dietary guidelines for the improvement of public health.

This study was conducted to determine the carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) response of litterfall components as affected by N addition in compound fertilizer in a Korean red pine (Pinus densiflora S. et Z.) stand in southern Korea. Litterfall in a mature red pine stand was collected for two years following compound fertilizer application ($N_3P_4K_1$; $P_4K_1$) and no fertilization (control). The C concentration of litterfall components was not significantly (P > 0.05) different between the $N_3P_4K_1$ and the control plots, whereas the N concentration of the litterfall components was significantly higher in the $N_3P_4K_1$ plot than in the control plot. The $N_3P_4K_1$ and $P_4K_1$ additions induced a lower C/N ratio of litterfall components compared with the control plot. Annual C and N fluxes via litterfall components were not affected by the $N_3P_4K_1$ addition over the study period, except for reproduction litter. Annual N fluxes via reproduction litter were significantly higher in the $N_3P_4K_1$ plot than in the control plot. Thus, the $N_3P_4K_1$ and $P_4K_1$ additions could modify differently nutrient distribution of the forest floor and mineral soils in a red pine stand. These results indicate that N concentration and C/N ratio in litterfall components are more susceptible to fertilizer application than the C response in litterfall components.
Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate dietary protein intake and its adequacy among Korean adults during recent 10 years. Methods: Based on the 2010 ~ 2019 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) data, a total of 51,296 adults aged 19 years old or more who participated in a one-day 24-hr dietary recall were included. Dietary protein intake was estimated as percentages of total energy (% of energy) and grams per body weight (g/kg/day) and compared with the 2020 Dietary Reference Intakes for Koreans to evaluate the adequacy of protein intake. In addition, proportions of people whose protein intakes were less than the estimated average requirement (EAR) and above the upper limit of the acceptable macronutrient distribution range (AMDR) (> 20% of energy) were calculated according to sociodemographic characteristics. Results: Protein intake was increased from 14.7% of energy in 2010 to 15.6% of energy in 2019 among Korean adults. However, there was no increase in protein intake relative to the recommended nutrient intake (% RNI) during the recent 10 years. Protein intake relative to the RNI was decreased from 130.2% in 2010 to 121.1% in 2019 (P for trend < 0.0001) among total participants, and a significant decreasing trend was observed in all age groups except for over 65 years old. However, protein intake relative to the RNI was lowest in the elderly (98.6%). Proportions of low protein intake (< EAR) and high protein intake (> AMDR) increased in the past 10 years (P for trend < 0.0001 for all), and these were associated with socioeconomic statuses, such as education and household income levels. Conclusions: These findings suggest that protein adequacy in Korean adults has not been improved over the past decade compared with recommended levels. Nutritional education and intervention programs should consider different intake levels according to sociodemographic characteristics.

This study provided basic data for the commercialization of healthy functional beverages by examining the physicochemical characteristics, nutrient content, and microbiological safety of onion peel beverage. The total acid of onion peel beverage was 0.12 mg/g and the pH was 6.07. According to the storage period, the total acid decreased and the pH increased in all temperature ranges(25℃, 35℃, and 45℃). After 30 days of storage, it showed 0.06 mg/g in all temperature sections and maintained the pH 7 range. The total phenol content, which is a nutritional component of onion peel beverage, was 0.93 mg/g, flavonoid content was 0.25 mg/g, and quercetin content was 0.17 mg/g. The flavonoid content decreased according to the storage period, and in the case of storage temperature of 25℃, it contained 50% content up to 120 days of storage, but in the case of 35℃ and 45℃, it had a flavonoid content up to 90 days and 30 days, respectively. In the case of quercetin, a residual rate of about 50% was shown for 150 days of storage at 25℃ and 35℃. In the case of 45℃, it decreased to 35% at 30 days of storage. On the other hand, onion peel beverage maintained a viable cell count of less than 5 CFU/mL for 150 days of storage, and no coliform group was detected. As a result of analyzing the quality characteristics of onion peel beverage according to storage period, quality stability was confirmed in physicochemical characteristics and microbiological safety. Research on changes in biological activity according to low-temperature distribution or storage period is necessary.
To evaluate the impact of effluents from land-based fish farms on the coastal ocean of Wando, Korea, we analyzed inorganic nutrients, particulate organic carbon (POC), dissolved organic carbon (DOC), and colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM) in the effluent and influent of land-based fish farms during the summer (July) of 2021. The average concentrations of nutrients (Dissolved inorganic nitrogen, phosphorus, and silicate; DIN, DIP, and DSi, respectively) in the effluents of this study area were 17±3.7 μM, 1.4±0.7 μM, and 14±1.6 μM, respectively. The average concentrations of POC and DOC were 37±22 μM and 81±13 μM, respectively, with POC accounting for about 30% for total organic carbon in effluents. The Reduced Dissolved Inorganic Nitrogen/Total Dissolved Inorganic Nitrogen ratio (0.7), potential short-period index, indicates that the discharge of nutrients excreted by the fish and unconsumed feed into coastal water results in such nutrients being deposited and accumulated in the sediment. Subsequently, this continuous accumulation triggers the release of ammonium ions during organic matter decomposition, and the ammonium-enriched waters that encroach on fish farms as influent seem to be due to the diffusion of high concentrations of ammonium from bottom sediment. Furthermore, we used fluorescence indices to examine the characteristics of organic matter sources, obtaining mean values of 1.54±0.19, 1.06±0.06, and 1.56±0.06 for the humification index, biological index, and fluorescence index, respectively, in the effluent. These results indicate that the organic matters had an autochthonous origin that resulted from microbial decomposition, and such organic matters were rapidly generated and removed by biological activity, likely supplied from the sediment. Our results suggest that the effluent from land-based fish farms could be a potential source of deoxygenation occurrence in coastal areas.
Pacific oysters Crassostrea gigas are a popular shellfish in the Republic of Korea. However, due to their abundant moisture and nutrient content, oysters are susceptible to microbiological growth and biochemical changes, which lead to quality degradation. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) in maintaining the quality of raw oysters during storage. Microbiological and physicochemical parameters such as pH, glycogen content, soluble protein, turbidity, and volatile basic nitrogen (VBN) were analyzed for oysters stored under various gas compositions and storage periods. The results showed that there was no significant increase in viable cell count in MAP oysters after six days in MAP oysters. Moreover, the physicochemical quality of non-MAP oysters deteriorated rapidly, whereas the quality of MAP oysters were maintained during storage. This study suggests that MAP can be an effective technique for maintaining the freshness of raw oysters during distribution and storage, and may also be useful for extending the shelf-life and maintaining the quality of other seafood products.
