A new numerical model was doveloped to simulate density-dependent ground water flow and solute transport. Accuracy of a numerical model depends upon how well it simulates advection dominant situations because numerical oscillations can spoil solutions for these situations. Nonlinear oscillation-absorption finite element method. based on the variational principle, was employed. Unlike previous numerical models, this model can easily be expanded for more complex situations. Accuracy of the model is evaluated by comparing with analytical solutions and results of other numerical model.

Preserving high-order accuracy in high-order FDTD solutions across dielectric interfaces is very important for practical time-domain electromagnetic simulations. This paper presents a fourth-order accurate numerical boundary scheme for the planar dielectric interface to be used in the fourth-order FDTD method proposed earlier by the author. The interface scheme for the two-dimensional (2-D) transverse magnetic (TM) polarization case is derived and validated by monitoring the $L_2$ norm errors in the numerical solutions of a partially-filled cavity demonstrating its fourth-order convergence and long-time numerical stability in the presence of the planar dielectric interface.

The Richards equation for water movement in unsaturated soil is highly nonlinear partial differential equations which are not solvable analytically unless unrealistic and oversimplifying assumptions are made regarding the attributes, dynamics, and properties of the physical systems. Therefore, conventionally, numerical solutions are the only feasible procedures to model flow in partially saturated porous media. The standard Finite element numerical technique is usually coupled with an Euler time discretizations scheme. Except for the fully explicit forward method, any other Euler time-marching algorithm generates nonlinear algebraic equations which should be solved using iterative procedures such as Newton and Picard iterations. In this study, lumped mass and distributed mass in the frame of Picard and Newton iterative techniques were evaluated to determine the most efficient method to solve the Richards equation with finite element model. The accuracy and computational efficiency of the scheme and of the Picard and Newton models are assessed for three test problems simulating one-dimensional flow processes in unsaturated porous media. Results demonstrated that, the conventional mass distributed finite element method suffers from numerical oscillations at the wetting front, especially for very dry initial conditions. Even though small mesh sizes are applied for all the test problems, it is shown that the traditional mass-distributed scheme can still generate an incorrect response due to the highly nonlinear properties of water flow in unsaturated soil and cause numerical oscillation. On the other hand, non oscillatory solutions are obtained and non-physics solutions for these problems are evaded by using the mass-lumped finite element method.

An inverse method is introduced to construct benchmark problems for the numerical solution of initial value problems. Benchmark problems constructed through this method have a known exact solution, even though analytical solutions are generally not obtainable. The solution is constructed such that it lies near a given approximate numerical solution, and therefore the special case solution can be generated in a versatile and physically meaningful fashion and can serve as a benchmark problem to validate approximate solution methods. A smooth interpolation of the approximate solution is forced to exactly satisfy the differential equation by analytically deriving a small forcing function to absorb all of the errors in the interpolated approximate solution. A multi-variable orthogonal function expansion method and computer symbol manipulation are successfully used for this process. Using this special case exact solution, it is possible to directly investigate the relationship between global errors of a candidate numerical solution process and the associated tuning parameters for a given code and a given problem. Under the assumption that the original differential equation is well-posed with respect to the small perturbations, we thereby obtain valuable information about the optimal choice of the tuning parameters and the achievable accuracy of the numerical solution. Illustrative examples show the utility of this method not only for the ordinary differential equations (ODEs) but for the partial differential equations (PDEs).

It is often hard to obtain analytical solutions of boundary value problems of shells. Introducing some approximations into the governing equations may allow us to get analytical solutions of boundary value problems. Instead of an analytical procedure, we can apply a numerical method to the governing equations. Since the governing equations of shells of revolution under symmetric load are expressed by ordinary differential equations, a numerical solution of ordinary differential equations is applicable to solve the equations. In this paper, the governing equations of orthotropic spherical shells under symmetric load are derived from the classical theory based on differential geometry, and the analysis is numerically carried out by computer program of Runge-Kutta methods. The numerical results are compared to the solutions of a commercial analysis program, SAP2000, and show good agreement.

A numerical analysis has been carried out on forced convection heat transfer in the developing region of a porous channel. The channel is filled with an isotropic porous medium. At the channel walls, a uniform heat flux is given. Comprehensive numerical solutions are acquired to the Brinkman-Forchheimer extended Darcy equation and the LTNE model which does not employ the assumption of local thermal equilibrium between solid and fluid phases. Details of thermal fields in the developing region are examined over wide ranges of the thermal parameters. The numerical solutions at the fully developed region are compared with the previous analytical solutions. The correlation for predicting local Nusselt number in a porous channel is proposed.

The paper deals with the numerical solution of the dynamic problem of masonry structures. Masonry is modelled as a non-linear elastic material with zero tensile strength and infinite compressive strength. Due to the non-linearity of the adopted constitutive equation, the equations of the motion must be integrated directly. In particular, we apply the Newmark or the Hilber-Hughes-Taylor methods implemented in code NOSA to perform the time integration of the system of ordinary differential equations obtained from discretising the structure into finite elements. Moreover, with the aim of evaluating the effectiveness of these two methods, some dynamic problems, whose explicit solutions are known, have been solved numerically. Comparisons between the exact solutions and the corresponding approximate solutions obtained via the Newmark and Hilber-Hughes-Taylor methods show that in the cases under consideration both numerical methods yield satisfactory results.

In this article, we explore the issue concerning semiconductors half-space comprised of materials with varying thermal conductivity. The problem is within the framework of the generalized thermoelastic model under one thermal relaxation time. The half-boundary space's plane is considered to be traction free and is subjected to a thermal shock. The material is supposed to have a temperature-dependent thermal conductivity. The numerical solutions to the problem are achieved using the finite element approach. To find the analytical solution to the linear problem, the eigenvalue approach is used with the Laplace transform. Neglecting the new parameter allows for comparisons between numerical findings and analytical solutions. This facilitates an examination of the physical quantities in the numerical solutions, ensuring the accuracy of the proposed approach.
In this paper, we report the numerical and experimental solutions of the axi-symmetric flows in the axial plane driven by an impingement of fluid from the bottom wall of a circular cylinder. We managed to visualize successfully the flow pattern shown on the vertical plane through the container axis. The numerical results are not show to compare well with the experimental results for the case of the Rossby number 3. Because the numerical results calculate on the assumption that vortex flows are axi-symmetric flow on the other hand real experimental results are show asymmetric flow. The numerical solutions reveal that inertial oscillation plays an important role at small Rossby numbers, or at a larger background rotation.

Numerical solutions to the advection equations used for long-range transport air pollution models are calculated using three numerical methods; Antidiffusion correction method(Smolarkiewicz, 1983), Positive definite advecton scheme obtained by nonlinear renormalization of the advective fluxes(Bott, 1989), and Positive definite pseudospectral method(Bartnicki, 1989). Accuracy, numerical diffusion and computational time requirement are compared for two-dimensional transport calculations in a uniform rotational flow field. The solutions from three methods are positive definite. Bartnicki(1989)'s method is most conservative but requires approximately 10 times as much computational time as Smolarkiewicz(1983)'s method of which numerical diffusion is the largest. All three methods are more conservative for a cone shape initial condition than for a rectangular block initial condition with a steep gradient.
