  • Enclosures are widely used to alleviate the contribution of machinery noise. It has been long concerned with the noise transmission through the access openings of the enclosures. In this study, we investigate active noise control technology for reduction of the transmission. A numerical model based on the acoustic boundary element method is first established. Using the numerical model, the acoustic transfer functions of the field points over the opening to the primary source at arbitrary locations are estimated. The feedforward control to minimize the acoustic power through the opening is then numerically implemented. The controller drives the secondary source to destructively interfere the noise transmission through the opening. Finally, a parametric study is conducted to evaluate the effects of the location and the number of the microphones on the control performance. Furthermore, the effects of the location of the secondary source on the performance of active noise control are investigated. It is followed that the control system implemented in this study leads to a significant reduction of about 31.5 dB in the sound power through the opening using only one secondary source located at the optimized position.

  • The aerodynamic noise reduction of railway traction motor is required to satisfy new enhanced Korean noise regulations for a train. This paper is the study result on a noise reduction of a railway traction motor using Lattice Boltzmann Method(LBM). To verify the reliability of numerical analysis, the noise performance of the base model evaluated using LBM, and calculated result was compared with the experimental data. In addition, main noise sources were selected to design parameters through analyzing the flow field of the base model. Based on the noise sources analysis result, a design improvement model of traction motor for this study was derived to reduce the noise. The performance of a design improvement model was evaluated by applying a validated numerical scheme. As a result, it was confirmed that the noise was reduced due to the suppression of the internal turbulent flow components.

  • In this study, to predict the noise of a submarine propeller which is going to become bigger and faster, the non - cavitating propeller noise was predicted based on the numerical analysis which considering the interaction of the hull - appendages - propeller. In order to predict the radiated noise of the propeller, the flow field for the entire region of hull-appendages-propeller was computed by CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics). And the noise for the thickness noise and the load noise was numerically predicted using FW-H (Ffwocs Williams-Hawkings) acoustic analogy. Numerical noise prediction results were verified by model tests and showed good agreement with the measurement results in predicting total noise level and low frequency noise.

  • This paper deals with a squeal noise in a brake system. It has been proved that the squeal noise is influenced by the angular misalignment of a disk, disk run-out, with the previously experimental study. In this study, a cause of the noise is examined by using FE analysis program(SAMCEF) and numerical analyses with a derived analytical equation of the disk based on the experimental results. The FE analyses and numerical results show that the squeal noise is due to the disk run-out as the experimental results and the frequency component of the noise equals to that of a disk's bending mode arising from the Hopf bifurcation.

  • On the basis of theoretical studies on the effect of the cylinders attached to semi-infinite screens, the tangential sound power-transport parallel to the surface of the attached cylinder is minimized by means of a secondary sound field, which is generated from a part of the attached cylinder. The numerical study shows the possibility of deflecting the incident sound by minimizing the sound field of the upper sections. The acoustical shadow region was more pronounced in both near- and far-field compared to the passive case with rigid surface, i.e. without active control. For a relatively wide frequency range it was possible to enhance shielding effects only with few secondary sources and error microphones. In this paper effects of control parameters on the actively controlled sound field near the top edge of noise barriers are studied. Results of numerical study and model measurements are shown and discussed.

  • The purpose of this study is to find the amount of contributions of each Sirroco fan parameter to noise and performance using experimental and numerical approaches. We made several fans and structures related to fan housing and fan for parameter study like inlet blade angle, outlet blade angle, inlet diameter, outlet diameter, blade shape. etc.. Numerical analysis was performed using commercial code (FANNOISE) for the part not to be possible to do experiment. Using these parameter study, We have found the way to reduce noise and improve performance of fan and had some useful data for designing low noise and high performance fan.

  • Over the last few decades, noise has played a major role in the development of aircraft engines. The dominant noise is generated by the wake interactions of fan and downstream stator. Engine inlet and exhaust ducts are being fitted with liner materials that aid in damping fan related noise. In this paper, the radiation of duct internal noise from duct open ends with liners is studies via numerical methods. The linearized Euler's equations in generalized curvilinear coordinates are solved by the DRP scheme. The far field sound pressure levels are computed by the Kirchhoff integration method. Through comparison of sound directivity from bell-mouth duct with and without liners, it is shown that radiation from engine inlet is affected by liner effects or a soft wall boundary condition.

  • It is proposed to analyze the vibration of slab with MTMD and vibration-induced noise. Substructure synthesis is introduced to develope the interaction between the slab and MTMD which are defined in different space and acoustic power is obtained from the velocity field of slab. Numerical analysis is performed to show that the vibration and noise of slab can be reduced by MTMD. A living room of wall type apartment including the wall and MTMD is modeled and analyzed by FEM program Numerical analysis shows that the vibration and noise control effect is different depending on the location and mass ratio of MTMD. Futhermore, noise is more effectively reduced when the vibration of higher modes of slab are reduced rather than lower modes.

  • In this paper we confirm the relation between the phases and phase errors of the beat signal at the lock-in region of the amplitude modulation type ring laser gyroscope by numerical calculation. Based on this facts, we, numerically, study the envelopes and magnitudes of the dither noise for statistically summing out the beat signal phase error, and we, experimently, confirm these numerical results. As a result, we find that the dither noise requires the increase gradient and the decrease gradient of the dither amplitudes, and those gradients should be combined with white noise. The magnitude of the dither noise which is satisfied with these requirements should be more than 5 percents of the average dither amplitude.
