  • Aircraft-related accidents cause mass casualties and major material damages. At present, runway-related accidents in our country account for 28% of all air accidents. Furthermore, internationally 33% of all air accidents is connected with runway. To prevent these accidents, FAA mandates the installation of aircraft rapid arresting system(ARAS) at the runway end safety areas which do not meet the FAA requirements. Even if the areas satisfy the conditions, FAA recommends the installation of ARAS to ensure the safety. In accordance of the international affairs, the domestic studies for ARAS are in progress and the legal formalities for domestic adoption of ARAS is under way. In this study, we analyzed the stopping distance, drag force, vertical force and tire penetration of runway overrun to assess the performance of ARAS reasonably by using two different kinds of analysis programs. The first is ARRESTOR program adopted by FAA, and the second is LS-DYNA which is available for 3-dimensional nonlineal dynamic analysis. As a result, analytically the stopping distances between two programs are similar. The drag force is rather different, but the tendencies are similar. Later on, the 3-dimensional simulation analysis considering various air-craft condition and properties of packaging materials is necessary. In addition, ongoing development of simulation analysis program is required for more accurate analistic results.

  • Multiple thermal energy storage (TES) caverns can be used for storing thermal energy on a large scale and for a high-aspect-ratio heat storage design to provide good thermal performance. It may also be necessary to consider the use of multiple caverns with a reduced length when a single, long tunnel-shaped cavern is not suitable for connection to aboveground heat production and injection equipments. When using multiple TES caverns, the separation distance between the caverns is one of the significant factors that should be considered in the design of storage space, and the optimal separation distance should be determined based on a quantitative stability criterion. In this paper, we described a numerical approach for determining the optimal separation distance between multiple caverns for large-scale TES utilization. For reliable stability evaluation of multiple caverns, we employed a probabilistic method which can quantitatively take into account the uncertainty of input parameters by probability distributions, unlike conventional deterministic approaches. The present approach was applied to the design of a conceptual TES model to store hot water for district heating. The probabilistic stability results of this application demonstrated that the approach in our work can be effectively used as a decision-making tool to determine the optimal separation distance between multiple caverns. In addition, the probabilistic results were compared to those obtained through a deterministic analysis, and the comparison results suggested that care should taken in selecting the acceptable level of stability when using deterministic approaches.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the taste sensitivity in patients with oral mucosal diseases(Oral lichen planus(OLP), Recurrent apthous ulcer(RAU)) using electrogustometer. One hundred and seventy three subjects were included for the study and they were categorized into 2 groups(control 100, patient 73) and patient group was investigated in the Department of Oral Medicine, Pusan National University Hospital from April, 2005 until January, 2007. Control group was investigated in the clinics at Inchen Metroplitan city and Cheongju city from February to August, 2006. The electrical taste thresholds were measured by using an electrogustometer for the 4 different sites(tongue tip, tongue lateral, circumvallate papilla and soft palate) in oral cavity. The results were as follows ; 1. The electrical taste threshold in patient group was significantly decreased than that in the control group(p<0.001). 2. The electrical taste threshold, in terms of the chronicity and lesion multiplicity, was not significantly changed in patient group. 3. The electrical taste threshold was not significantly changed in Dexan only and Dexan+Prs combination treated group. 4. The electrical taste threshold, in terms of treatment progress(no response vs half response vs complete response), was not significantly changed. However subjective index which was determined by NAS(Numerical Analogy Scale) was significantly increased in no response group but significantly decreased in complete response group(p<0.001)

  • PGA (Peak Ground Acceleration) is the parameter which indicates the peak value for strong ground motion and is mainly due to the intensity of the seismic wave. Usually, seismic waves can consist of different characteristics and can have different effects on structures. Therefore, it may be undesirable that the effects of a seismic wave are evaluated only based on the PGA. In this study, time history analysis was executed with a single degree of freedom model for inelastic seismic analysis. The numerical model was assumed to be a perfect elasto-plastic model. Input accelerations were made with El Centro NS (1940), other earthquake records and artificial earthquakes. The displacement ductility demand and cumulative dissipated energy, which were calculated from other artificial earthquakes, were compared. As a result, different responses from other seismic waves which have the same PGA were identified. Therefore, an index which could reflect both seismic and structural characteristics is needed. The SI (Spectrum Intensity) scale which could be obtained from integration by parts of the velocity response spectrum could be an index reflecting the inelastic seismic response of structures. It can be possible to identify from correlation analysis among the SI scale, displacement ductility demand and cumulative dissipated energy that the SI scale is sufficient to be an index for the inelastic response of structures under seismic conditions.

  • For Web-based applications in IoT environment, IETF CoRE WG has standardizing the CoAP. One of limitations of CoAP is that CoAP standard does not consider the mobility management of the CoAP sensor node. In this paper, we propose the mobility management protocol of CoAP sensor node by considering the characteristics of the constrained network. The proposed mobility management protocol supports for Web client to be transmitted the sensing data from CoAP node reliably while the CoAP sensor moves into different wireless networks. To do this, we designed the architecture with the separate IP address management of CoAP sensor node and presented the mobility management protocol, which includes the holding and binding mode, in order to provide the reliable transmission. Finally, the numerical analysis and simulation with NS2 tool have been done for the performance evaluation in terms of the handover latency and packet loss with comparing the proposed mobility management protocol with other the existing mobility management protocols. The performance result shows that the proposed mobility management can provide the transmission of sensing data without the packet loss comparing with the existing mobility management protocol reliably.

  • This paper presents a continuum-based shape design sensitivity analysis(DSA) method for crack propagation problems using a reproducing kernel method(RKM), which facilitates the remeshing problem required for finite element analysis(FEA) and provides the higher order shape functions by increasing the continuity of the kernel functions. A linear elasticity is considered to obtain the required stress field around the crack tip for the evaluation of J-integral. The sensitivity of displacement field and stress intensity factor(SIF) with respect to shape design variables are derived using a material derivative approach. For efficient computation of design sensitivity, an adjoint variable method is employed tather than the direct differentiation method. Through numerical examples, The mesh-free and the DSA methods show excellent agreement with finite difference results. The DSA results are further extended to a shape optimization of crack propagation problems to control the propagation path.

  • An objective of this study is as follows: 1) performing sensitivity analysis and parameter estimation of RMA2 and RMA4 models for the West-Nakdong River, 2) drawing up alternatives of gates-operation for water-quality enhancement, and 3) quantitative evaluation of methodology of 'flow-restoration by gates-operation' among 'Comprehensive Plan Improving Water-Quality in the West-Nakdong River(WNR)' with the target water-quality(BOD at Nakbon-N point: below 4.3 mg/L). The parameters for the RMA2 (depth-averaged two-dimensional flow model) and RMA4 (depth-averaged two-dimensional water-quality model) were determined by sensitivity analysis. Result of parameter estimation for RMA2 and RMA4 models is $1,000\;Pa{\cdot}s$ of the eddy viscosity, 20 of the Peclet number, 0.025 of the Manning coefficient, and $1.0\;m^2/s$ of the diffusion coefficient. We have evaluated the effects of water-quality enhancement of the selected alternatives by numerical simulation technique with the models under the steady-state flow condition and the time-variant transport condition. Because of no-resuspension from river bottom and considering BOD as conservative matter, these simulation results slightly differ from real phenomena. In the case of $50\;m^3/s$ of Daejeo-gate inflow, two-dimensional flow pn results result represents that small velocity occurs in the Pyungkang Stream and no flow in the Maekdo River. In the WNR, there occurs the most rapid flow near timhae-bridge. In the WNR, changes of water-quality for the four selected simulation cases(6, 10, 30, $50\;m^3/s$ of the Daejeo-gate inflow) were predicted. Since the Daejeo-Gate and the Noksan-Gate can be opened up to 7 days, it would be found that sustainable inflow of $30\;m^3/s$ at the Daejeo-gate makes BOD in the WNR to be under the target of water-quality.

  • Traditionally Jeju island has a mild oceanic climate throughout the year and famous as worldwide resort area bacause of its pure natural environment and dramatic coastal scenery. But unpredicted coastal erosion problem, caused by variation of environmental conditions from construction of coastal structure and renovation of the existing ports, has raised its head above the water, and is becoming serious these days just like other coastal area in Korea. The phenomena happen here along the seaside of southern part of the island show that severe changes in coastal line from erosion and even witnessed the coastal cliff failure. In advanced countries, coastal engineers and researchers have studied deeply about this kind of problem for a long time. However, as it is not sot active in Korea and lack of research data, there exists difficulties on building protection methods and thoughtless constructions might make it more complicated and fatal to the coastal environment. In this study, we investigated some case studies of other countries and intended to induce and propose some integral protection methods for coastline erosion, considering environmentally sound and water friendly way of developement such as artificial reef, floating breakwater, and double cellblock breakwater. Finally, we made analysis on the proposed methods with numerical model test and evaluation on the feasibility of each method.

  • This paper studies the support region of an optimum (minimum mean-squre error) fixed-rate scalar quantizer for a Weibull source. The support region is defined to be the interval determined by the outermost thresholds of a quantizer and plays an important role in its performance, and hence it motivates this study. The paper reports the following specific results. First, approximation formulas are derived for the outermost thresholds of optimum scalar quantizers for a Weibull distributions. Second, in the case of Rayleigh and exponential distributions the derived approximation formulas are compared for the evaluation of their accuracy with the true values of optimum quantizers. Numerical results show that the formula for the leftmost threshold stays within 1% of the true value for 128 and 256 quantization points or more, for Rayleigh and exponential distribution, respectively, while that for the rightmost threshold does so for 512 and 32 quantization points or more. These formulas exhibit increased accuracy with the number of quantization points. In conclusion, the formulas have high accuracy. The contribution of the paper consists in the derivation of closed accurate formulas for the support of optimum.

  • Even though high performance concrete was developed according to the trend of bigger and higher of reinforced concrete building, the rheological evaluations such as viscosity, yield stress are not enough to use as input data to accomplish the numerical analysis for the construction design. So there are many problems in the harden concrete such as poor compaction, rock pocket and crack, etc. in the field. In this study, consistency curves were measured by the viscometer as hydration reaction time passed. At the same time the slump flow test and Vicat setting test were carried out for comparing with the results of rheological properties. The fluidity of the W/B 30% decreased as the increase of replacement ratio of blast furnace slag. But in case of W/B 40%, the replacement ration did not significantly influenced to the slump flow value with the passage of hydration time. By the replacement of blast furnace slag to cement, initial setting was delayed and the time gap between initial and final setting became shorten. Through the regression analysis using Bingham model, there are a sudden changes of viscosity and yield stress around initial setting in case of low W/B 30%. The increase of workability by the change of free water in cement paste was offset by the coating effect of impermeable layer in case of W/B 40%.
