  • In this paper, we propose a multi-scale crack detection method using scaling. It is based on morphology algorithm, crack features, and scaling. We use a morphology operator which extracts patterns of crack. It segments cracks and background using opening and closing operations. Morphology based segmentation is better than existing integration methods using subtraction in detecting a crack it has small width. However, morphology methods using only one structure element could detect only fixed width crack. Thus, we use a scaling method. We use bilinear interpolation for scaling. Our method calculates values of properties such as the number of pixels and the maximum length of the segmented region. We decide whether the segmented region belongs to cracks according to those data. Experimental results show that our proposed multi-scale crack detection method has better results than those of existing detection methods.

  • The organization for satellite operation team is mainly based on the number of satellites to be controlled, operator's workload of payload operation support and the degree of automation of the operation system. Although the structure and its functionality of satellite operation organization are a little different according to the complexity of the operation, most satellite control centers have adapted the similar architecture for single or multiple satellite support. KARI Satellite Operation Center(KSOC) has started its simple mission operations since the launch of KOMPSAT-1(21st Dec. 1999) and has been evolving into multiple mission operations for various satellites such as KOMPSAT-2, KOMPSAT-3, KOMPSAT-5 and COMS(Communication Ocean Meteorological Satellite). This paper presents the appropriate direction of future deployment for KSOC by comparing the current status with the recommendation of the advanced satellite operation organization and analyzing their experiences in order to propose the better solution for efficient and safe satellite operations.

  • Purpose: As the interest and demand for esthetics grow up with medical development, the number of patients who want to correct dentofacial deformities by orthognathic surgery has increased. And the success of orthognathic surgery is dependent upon satisfaction of patients in great measure. Therefore the purpose of this study is to examine functional disability, sensory disturbance and esthetic satisfaction of the patients after orthognathic surgery. Material and methods: Among 89 patients who orthognathic surgery was performed at Seoul National University Bundang Hospital during the period from July 2003 to July 2008, 46 patients were considered in the study. Patients were surveyed with questionnaires and visual analogue scale(VAS) which author has designed. The analysis and comparison were performed according to gender, follow up span, and type of surgery based on answer of questionnaires. Results and conclusions: Total satisfaction rate was 76%. And there was statistical significant difference between subjective evaluation of facial esthetics before the surgery and that of after surgery(p<0.05). Differences in occurrence of functional disability, sensory disturbance between groups were not observed. In conclusion, the operator should understand the postoperative self-satisfaction of the patients and complications. If we can communicate with the patients before operation. patients' satisfaction rate will increase after operation.

  • VR(Virtual reality) technologies have given engineers the ability to design, test, and evaluate engineering systems in a virtual environment. The virtual plant is the highlight of the application of the VR technology to plant engineering. Plant design, maintenance, control, management, operation are integrated in the virtual plant. The VR monitoring system including the concept of the virtual plant is developed to replace a current control room that has number of gages and warning lamps in two-dimensional panels which shows the operating status of a plant. The operating status of the plant is displayed in the VR monitoring system through the realistic computer graphics. Sophisticated, realistic and prompt control becomes possible. The VR monitoring system consists of advanced visualization, walk-through simulation and navigation. In the virtual environment, a user can navigate and interact with each component of a plant. In addition, the user can access the information by just clicking interesting component. The VR monitoring system is operated with various modules, such as (1) virtual plant constructed with Graphic Management System (GMS), (2) Touch & Tell System, and (3) Equipment DB System of Part. In order to confirm the usefulness of the VR monitoring system, a pilot gas plant which is currently being used for plant operator training is taken as application. The end of the paper gives an outlook on the future work and a brief conclusion.

  • A range mosaic query returns distribution of data within the query region as a pattern of mosaic, whereas a range aggregate query returns a single aggregate value of data within the query region. The range mosaic query divides a query region by a multi-dimensional grid, and calculates aggregate values of grid cells. In this paper, we propose a new type of query, range mosaic query and a new operator, mosaic-by, with which the range mosaic queries can be represented. In addition, we suggest efficient algorithms for processing range mosaic queries using an aggregate R-tree. The algorithm that we present computes aggregate results of every mosaic grid cell by one time traversal of the aggregate R-tree, and efficiently executes the queries with only a small number of node accesses by using the aggregate values of the aggregate R-tree. Our experimental study shows that the range mosaic query algorithm is reliable in terms of performance for several synthetic datasets and a real-world dataset.

  • Deep Neural Network (DNN) is a large layered neural network which is consisted of a number of layers of non-linear units. Deep Learning which represented as DNN has been applied very successfully in various applications. However, many issues in DNN have been identified through past researches. Among these issues, generalization is the most well-known problem. A Recent study, Dropout, successfully addressed this problem. Also, Dropout plays a role as noise, and so it helps to learn robust feature during learning in DNN such as Denoising AutoEncoder. However, because of a large computations required in Dropout, training takes a lot of time. Since Dropout keeps changing an inter-layer representation during the training session, the learning rates should be small, which makes training time longer. In this paper, using mutation operation, we reduce computation and improve generalization performance compared with Dropout. Also, we experimented proposed method to compare with Dropout method and showed that our method is superior to the Dropout one.

  • A mathematical model for the two-dimensional unsteady flow was developed by introducing Abbott's implicit finite difference operator and double sweep algorithm, which could be applied to simulate the respose of a harbor against the intrusion of long waves through the entrance connected to open sea. In order to improve its accuracy corresponding to the field phenomena, bottom resistance, Coriolis force, wind effect terms were included and wave direction and radiating effect was considered. The result of seiche test was always stable and the amplitude was accurate. Some phase shift was occured, but it could be reduced by using small values of Courant number and many points per a wave length as well. A comparision with the Ippen and Goda's theoritical and hydraulic experimental works was fulfilled.

  • We estimated the orbit of the Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite (COMS), a Geostationary Earth Orbit (GEO) satellite, through data from actual optical observations using telescopes at the Sobaeksan Optical Astronomy Observatory (SOAO) of the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI), Optical Wide field Patrol (OWL) at KASI, and the Chungbuk National University Observatory (CNUO) from August 1, 2014, to January 13, 2015. The astrometric data of the satellite were extracted from the World Coordinate System (WCS) in the obtained images, and geometrically distorted errors were corrected. To handle the optically observed data, corrections were made for the observation time, light-travel time delay, shutter speed delay, and aberration. For final product, the sequential filter within the Orbit Determination Tool Kit (ODTK) was used for orbit estimation based on the results of optical observation. In addition, a comparative analysis was conducted between the precise orbit from the ephemeris of the COMS maintained by the satellite operator and the results of orbit estimation using optical observation. The orbits estimated in simulation agree with those estimated with actual optical observation data. The error in the results using optical observation data decreased with increasing number of observatories. Our results are useful for optimizing observation data for orbit estimation.

  • This study proposed an integrated approach to multiplication as a way to help students understand multiplication in elementary mathematics. The integrated approach to multiplication is to give students a broad understanding of multiplication by solving a situation of multiplication in a variety of ways in mathematics classes, exploring and discussing each other's methods. The integrated approach to multiplication was derived from a number of previous studies that emphasized various approaches, a consistent approach, and a specific approach to multiplication. As results, the integrated approach of multiplication can be interpreted in four ways as a situation of multiplication, and each method is connected to important characteristics of multiplication emphasized in previous studies. In addition, this study has theoretically confirmed that the integrated approach to multiplication is important not only for multiplication but also for division, fraction and operation of fractions, ratios, rates, and proportions. This study is expected to provide some implications for teachers with regard to multiplication in elementary school mathematics.

  • In this paper, we propose an automatic image-to-image registration between high resolution multi-sensor images. To do this, TerraSAR-X image was shifted according to the initial translation differences of the x and y directions between images estimated using Mutual Information method. After that, the Canny edge operator was applied to both images to extract linear features. These features were used to design a cost function that finds matching points based on the similarities of their locations and gradient orientations. For extracting large number of evenly distributed matching points, only one point within each regular grid constructed throughout the image was extracted to the final matching point pair. The model, which combined the piecewise linear function with the global affine transformation, was applied to increase the accuracy of the geometric correction, and the proposed method showed RMSE lower than 5m in all study sites.
