  • A simplified model for the colloidal calcium phosphate (CCP) nanocluster was developed from an active role of phosphate in the precipitation of casein (CN)/Ca mixtures and the composition of casein micelles (CM). The possible shape of the CCP nanocluster was selected as a tetrahedron, and we estimated that 4 CN molecules were involved in crosslinking a single CCP nanocluster. Similar values were obtained for the number of CN molecules involved in stabilizing the nanocluster when the number of CNs attached onto each nanocluster surface was deduced from the composition of CM. If one phosphoserine cluster consisted of 3 phosphoserine residues, the theoretical molecular weight and volume for the nanocluster were estimated to be 4,898 g/mol and 2.88 $nm^3$, respectively. It was also shown that the position of Ca present in our model were reasonably located to accommodate the serine phosphate in CN molecule.

  • Mathematically simplified reaction scheme that simulates autoignitions of the end gases in spark ignition engines has been studied computationally. The five equation model is described, to predict the essential features of hydrocarbon oxidation. This scheme has been calibrated against autoignition delay times measured in rapid compression machines. The rate constants, activation temperatures, Ta, Arrhenius preexponential constants, A, and heats of reaction for stoichiometric n-heptane/air, iso-octane/air, and their mixtures have all been optimised. The optimisation has been guided by Morley's correlation of the ratio of chain branching to linear termination rates with octane number. Comparisons between computed and experimental autoignition delay times have validated the Present simplified reaction scheme and the influences of octane number upon autoignition delay times have been computationally investigated. It has been found that both cool flame and high temperature direct reactions can have an effect on autoignition delay times.

  • Today's state-of the-art speech recognition systems typically use continuous distribution hidden Markov models with the mixtures of Gaussian distributions. To obtain higher recognition accuracy, the hidden Markov models typically require huge number of Gaussian distributions. Such speech recognition systems have problems that they require too much memory to run, and are too slow for large applications. Many approaches are proposed for the design of compact acoustic models. One of those models is subspace distribution clustering hidden Markov model. Subspace distribution clustering hidden Markov model can represent original full-space distributions as some combinations of a small number of subspace distribution codebooks. Therefore, how to make the codebook is an important issue in this approach. In this paper, we report some experimental results on various quantization methods to make more accurate models.

  • This paper introduces multichannel blind source separation (BSS) and multichannel blind deconvolution (MBD) based on higher order statistics of signals from convolutive mixtures. In particular, we are concerned with the case that the number of inputs is the same as the number of outputs. Simulations for two input two output cases are carried out and their performances are assessed. One of the major applications of those sequential algorithms (BSS and MBD) is demonstrated through the fault signal detection from only a single measurement of rotating machine, which offers a certain degree of practicability in the engineering field such as machine health monitoring or condition monitoring.

  • The electron drift velocity W and the product of the longitudinal diffusion coefficient and the gas number density $ND_{L}$ in the $0.525\;\%$ and $5.05\;\%$ $C_{3}F_8-Ar$ mixtures were measured by using the double shutter drift tube with variable drift distance over the E/N range from 0.03 to 100 Td and gas pressure range from 1 to 915 torr. And we determined the electron collision cross sections set for the $C_{3}F_8$ molecule by STEP 1 of electron swarm method using a multi-term Boltzmann equation analysis. Our special attention in the present study was focused upon the vibrational excitation and new excitations cross sections of the $C_{3}F_8$ molecule.

  • This study focuses on the classification of pathological voice using GMM (Gaussian Mixture Model) and compares the results to the previous work which was done by ANN (Artificial Neural Network). Speech data from normal people and patients were collected, then diagnosed and classified into two different categories. Six characteristic parameters (Jitter, Shimmer, NHR, SPI, APQ and RAP) were chosen. Then the classification method based on the artificial neural network and Gaussian mixture method was employed to discriminate the data into normal and pathological speech. The GMM method attained 98.4% average correct classification rate with training data and 95.2% average correct classification rate with test data. The different mixture number (3 to 15) of GMM was used in order to obtain an optimal condition for classification. We also compared the average classification rate based on GMM, ANN and HMM. The proper number of mixtures on Gaussian model needs to be investigated in our future work.

  • Temperature reduction in the manufacturing of asphalt mixtures is highly desirable from a number of aspects. Reduced fumes and emissions, and reduced energy consumption, are important environmental reasons to continue pursuing the goal of temperature reduction. There are important construction and performance advantages as well. For instance, improved workability results in better compaction; lower production and placement temperatures may improve prospects for cold weather paving; and lower temperatures will result in less binder aging and possibly better cracking resistance. The performance of WMA is not to be satisfied though there are various advantages. Therefore, more research is needed on a number of issues

  • X-ray powder diffraction is one of the most powerful techniques for qualitative and quantitative analysis of crystalline compounds. Thus, there exist a number of different methods for quantifying mineral mixtures using X-ray diffraction pattern. We present here the use of Rietveld and PONKCS (partial or no known crystal structure) methods for quantification of amorphous and crystallized mineral phases in synthetic mixtures of standard minerals (amorphous silica, quartz, mullite and corundum). Pawley phase model of amorphous silica was successfully built from the pattern of 100 wt% amorphous silica and internal standard-spiked samples by PONKCS approach. The average of absolute bias for quantities of amorphous silica was 1.85 wt%. The larger bias observed for lower quantities of amorphous silica is probably explained by low intensities of diffraction pattern. Averages of absolute bias for minerals were 0.53 wt% for quartz, 0.87 wt% for mullite and 0.57 wt% for corundum, respectively. The PONKCS approach achieved improved quantitative results compared with classical Rietveld method by using an internal standard.

  • The previous extensive in vitro studies on the antioxidative activities of a number of Korean grains, vegetables, seaweeds and mushrooms, and the various combinations of these food source exhibited a wide range of antioxidative activities, and four food mixtures composed of 5 kinds of foods (5A, 5B, 5C and 5D) were designed from 16 selective foods showing. high antioxidant effect, in vitro, to find the good combinations for the meal planning. Mixture 5B or 5C contained very high levels of total flavonoid and polyphenol, and ethanol extract from 5A, 5B or 5C showed very strong inhibitory effects against in vitro $Fe^{2+}-induced$ lipid peroxidation and ethanol extract from 5B or 5C showed remarkable DPPH radical scavenging effect and lipid peroxide-protein conjugation inhibition effect. And in vivo study was also carried out with two mixtures (5B, 5C). Powders (P5B, P5C) or ethanol extracts (E5B, E5C) of these mixtures were supplemented to Sprague-Dawley rats fed on high fat $(15\%)-high$ cholesterol $(1\%)$ semipurified diet for 5 weeks. The total antioxidant power in serum was significantly higher in P5B, P5C, E5B and E5C groups than in high fat control group, and $ascorbate-Fe^{2+}-induced$ TBARS was significantly lowered by E5B supplementation in rat liver. In liver tissue, Cu, Zn-SOD activity was significantly higher in P5B and E5B groups than in high fat control group, while catalase or GSH-peroxidase (GPx) activity was not changed by any supplementations. In kidney, Cu, ZnSOD activity was significantly higher in P5B group than in high fat control group, while GPx activity was not changed by any supplementations. Taken together, mixture 5B and 5C showed very strong antioxidative effects both in vitro and in vivo. Therefore, the ingredient Korean foods of 5B and 5C could be recommended to take a lot together for prevention from age-related chronic diseases.

  • Many researches have recently discussed about the film thickness as a good substitute or supplement for VMA or other volumetric criteria in the design procedure. Some researchers have not only proposed the specific number for the recommended film thickness, but also introduced the new calculation procedures or concepts. Each model (index model and the virtual model) has its own advantages and disadvantages in terms of the ability to account for the volumetric properties of the mixture. In this paper, the modified virtual model was proposed to combine advantages from both models. However, it cannot be disregarded the way to determine the appropriate particle shape factors for different sources and sizes of aggregates. In order to evaluate the different calculation methods, mixtures with two aggregate sources and eight gradations were designed based on the dominant aggregate size range (DASR) porosity concept. Superpave indirect tensile test (IDT) and asphalt pavement analyzer (AEA) test were used to describe the performance of mixtures. Test results indicated that the virtual model, which is the same to the modified virtual model for sphere 1:1 case, is better than the conventional standard model to define the range of the film thickness to have better performance of asphalt mixtures.
