  • The egg development and early life history of Acheilognathus majusculus which is Korean endemic species from Yeong river were observed under the controlled water temperature, $18.0{\pm}1.0^{\circ}C$. Fertilized eggs are opaque yellow in color and round oval shaped measuring 2.12 (2.08~2.18) mm in length and 1.86 (1.80~1.98) mm in breadth. The number of eggs averaged 72 (40~112) per an oviposition. The eggs of this species began to hatch about forty three hours after insemination and the total length of larvae was 4.23 mm mean. S form moving of larvae were not observed during larval development. The larvae reached at the heterotrophic stage about twenty-five days after hatching. It is estimated that the larvae was comming out from freshwater bivalve since that time in nature. A. majusculus was grew up to be adult stage enough which can be join to new production for three hundred days after hatching with over 67.8 mm in total length.

  • The gonadsomatic index (GSI) of mottled skate was the highest in April, GSI and HSI showed a reverse phase for its reproductive cycle. The fish had one pair of egg capsules, having 1 to 7 fertilized eggs, and spawned all the year round. When surveying the reproductive characteristics of females over 63 cm in disc width, we found the spawning peak was between April to June, and the appearance ratio of egg capsules was the highest in May (32.1%). The eggs were hatched at $8^{\circ}C$, $13^{\circ}C$, $18^{\circ}C$, water temperature (12.8 to $24.2^{\circ}C$), and the best hatching temperature was $18^{\circ}C$. The number of fish hatched was 4 to 5 fish/egg capsules, and the hatching rate was 100%. The sex ratios of hatching larvae were 45.5% female and 54.5% male. Therefore this study will provide fundamental data and information for artificial reproduction of the mottled skate.

  • In this study, the morphological development and early life cycle of larvae and juvenile Rhinogobius brunneus found in Wicheon, Nakdong River, Korea, were investigated. The fertilized eggs were 2.20×0.68 mm (long×short) in diameter. The eggs began hatching approximately 104 h after fertilization at water temperatures of 17.3-20.5℃ (mean 18.9±1.6℃). The newly hatched yolk-sac larvae were 3.71±0.06 mm in total length (TL), with an unopened anus. Three days after hatching, the preflexion larvae were 4.37±0.16 mm in TL with yolk absorption. Twenty days after hatching, the flexion larvae were 6.50±0.22 mm in TL and the tip of the notochord was bent upward. Twenty-seven days after hatching, the postflexion larvae were 11.8±0.63 mm in TL, and the tip of the urostyle was bent at 45°. Forty days after hatching, individuals measured 18.5±0.93 mm in TL and were considered as juveniles as the number of fins became constant for each part. All the postflexion larvae had detached fins. Additionally, the melanophore was observed to be distributed on the head, centrum of the body, and dorsal fin, and there was a difference in the morphology from the water stream.

  • In order to obtain a large number of fertilized eggs for seedling production, experiment was carried out examine effects of serotonin on spawning of the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas. The shorter response time to initial spawning in case of serotonin injection showed, the higher serotonin injected with 7.6-27 min. The response time to initial sperm releasing showed the same tendency with female. The highest response rates and eggs amount spawned were showed in the highest concentration. The serotonin injection had no effect on frequency of germinal vesicle breakdown (GVBD), fertilization and hatching rate.

  • The effects of bisphenol A (BPA), known as one of the endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs), on the hatching of fertilized eggs (FE) and the spawning of adult fish in songsari, Oryzias latipes were investigated. In condition of the experimental groups, incubated water temperature was $25.0{\pm}0.5^{\circ}C$ and photoperiod was 16 h (light) : 8 h (dark). fE were exposed to aqueous solutions of BPA at nominal concentration of 50, 100 and $200 {\mu}g/l$. The time required in hatching of FE was long in the BPA $50 and 100 {\mu}g/l$ treatment groups when compared to the controls, and in the BPA $200 {\mu}g/l$ treatment group, FE failed to hatch. And also hatching rate was decreased in the BPA treatment groups in comparison to the controls, Adult fishes were reared to oral administration via a diet of 50, 100 and $200 {\mu}g/g$ body weight BPA concentration for 3 weeks, Number of total eggs spawned in the adult fish were fewer in the BPA 100 and 200 treatment groups than in the controls and BPA 50 treatment group. Frequency of abnormal eggs in the total eggs spawned was 11.8 and $16.2{\%}$ in the control and acetone carrier control lower than 36.8, 46,8 and $74.1{\%}$ in the BPA 50, 100 and 200 treatment groups, respectively. And hatching rate of FE decreased in the BPA treatment groups in comparison to the controls. In these results, inhibition of the hatching of FE and the quantity and quality of spawned eggs in adult fish were observed from BPA treatment groups when compared to the controls.

  • This study describes results on sexual maturation and characteristics of natural spawned eggs to develop a method for the production of stable, healthy fertilized eggs from captive-reared yellowtail kingfish, Seriola lalandi. A total of 59 yellowtail kingfish were captured off the coast of Jeju Island, after which the broodstock was cultured in indoor culture tank ($100m^3$) until they were 6.1-14.9 kg in body weight. As part of the rearing management for induced sex maturation, the intensity of illumination was maintained at 130 lux. The photoperiod (light/dark; L/D) was set to a 12 L/12 D from October 2013 to January 2014, and 15 L/9 D from February 2014 to June 2014. Feeds comprised mainly EP (Extruded Pellets), with squid cuttlefish added for improvement of egg quality, and was given from April to June 2014. The first spawning of yellowtail kingfish occurred in May 3, 2014, at a water temperature of $17.0^{\circ}C$. Spawning continued until June 12, 2014, with the water temperature set at $20.5^{\circ}C$. Time of spawning was 26 times at this period. The total number of eggs that spawned during the spawning period was $4,449{\times}10^3$. The buoyant rate of spawning eggs and fertilization rate of buoyant eggs during the spawned period were 76.1% and 100%, respectively. The diameters of the egg and oil globule were $1.388{\pm}0.041mm$ and $0.378{\pm}0.029mm$, respectively, which was higher in early eggs than in those from late during the spawned period.

  • This study was carried out to obtain the fundamental data for the mass seedling production of grunt, Hapalogenys nitens in terms of the natural spawning and some characteristics of the eggs spawned. The wild grunt were reared at indoor tanks for three years. The adults spawners were 34.0∼44.0 cm (38.6$\pm$4.0 cm, n=7) in total length, 1.00∼2.23 kg (1.62$\pm$0.50 kg, n=7) in body weight. Spawning were observed 9 times from September 22 to October 1, 2000 and 37 times from August 22 to October 3, 2001, with a water temperature range of 19.8$\pm$28.5$^{\circ}C$. The total number of eggs collected was 2.29${\times}$10$^{7}$ (1.7${\times}$10$^{3}$/ml). The relative proportion of floating eggs to total eggs was 41.7%. The fertilization rate of floating eggs was ranged between 85.0 and 99.9% and the hatching rate was ranged between 2.9 and 93.0%. Fertilized eggs were buoyant and spherical in shape, and were 0.85∼0.98 mm in diameter. Each egg contained 1-5 oil globules which were, 0.18∼0.25 mm in diameter. The incubation time from fertilization to blastodisc formation was 10 minutes, to blastula was 3 hours, and to the hatched larvae at 26$^{\circ}C$ was 20 hours 30 minutes. The newly hatched larvae attained total length of 1.81$\pm$0.18 mm. The time required from fertilization to hatching was 31∼34 hours at 23$^{\circ}C$ and 17∼20 hours at 29$^{\circ}C$.

  • In this study, the reproductive behavior and embryonic and larval development of the short ninespine stickleback Pungitius kaibarae was described and illustrated based on observations during spawning, hatching, and larval rearing trials. Adult P. kaibarae were collected downstream in Jinhae during the reproductive season (April-May). Males had nuptial coloration on their entire black bodies, with blue dorsal spines and yellow eyes, whereas females had a brown spotted pattern on their bodies. Males built nests on the stems of water weeds and attracted females. Fertilization occurred in the nest immediately after spawning, and males guarded the eggs until hatching. The fertilized eggs of P. kaibarae were spherical, demersal, adhesive, and transparent, and each egg measured 1.43 ± 0.07 mm in diameter. The morula, blastula, and gastrula stages, as well as hatching began at 5, 18.5, 21.5, and 96 post fertilization (HPF), respectively, at 20.0 ± 0.5℃. The newly hatched larvae had a total length (TL) of 5.67 ± 0.50 mm, with a yolk volume of 0.583 ± 0.059 mm3. Their mouths and anuses had not yet opened. At 2 days posthatching (days post hatching, DPH), the yolk was completely absorbed and the larvae began to feed exogenously. Pigmentation was observed in freshly hatched larvae 4 h after hatching, with the presence of eight areas with a dotted pattern on the dorsal surface of the larvae and dispersed spots on the head and yolk sac. At 30 DPH, the TL of the juveniles was 21.34 ± 1.70 mm. The nest area and number of eggs were 259.56 ± 101.39 mm2 (75.18-506.04) and 155.33 ± 114.12 (0-437), respectively.

  • The Chili fish, one of the most common species of the freshwater fishes, is distributed in the river basins of the western coast of Korea. However, any studies on this fish, especially its development or life history, have not been made so far. The authors, therefore, carried out an experiment to reveal some characteristics of egg develoment and fry in this fish. For accomplshing this study, we caught some adult Chili fish by means of a casting net at raceway in the vicinity of Kunsan in June and July, 1983; then, we injected 0. 1 cc Gonadotrophic hormone 1,000 unit solution (Puberogen) in order to induce the spawning on the abdominal cavity of male and female respectively, Approximately 12 hours after injection, the artificially fertilized eggs by using of the dry method and the naturally fertilized eggs were observed simultaneously in the aquarium ($30{\times}50{\times}70cm$). The fertilized eggs, in spherical shape, were sperative, demersel, adhesive nature and $1.38{\sim}1.59\;mm$ in diameter. The light yellow yolk was opaque and $1.17{\sim}l.27\;mm$ in diameter. The hatching of eggs took place at 29.5 hours after fertilization under the condition of $23.5{\sim}25.0^{\circ}C$ water temperature. Basically there were not found so many different aspects in comparison with the common species of Cyprinidae in the development process of eggs : however, there were a few noticable characteristics, that is, pigment cells, eye balls and blood circulation are invisible, or the velocity of egg development is rapid, seemed similar to the Loach's egg. Newly hatched larvae with the yolk sac (2.39 mm in size) were $3.87{\sim}3.99\;mm$ in total length and their myotome number was expressed as 28+15=43. About 20 hours after hatching, a caudal and a pectoral fin as well as an anus began to orgin. In addition, a few malanophore showed on the upper regin of the yolk sac of the larvae whose size was 4.73 mm in total length. The larvae developed about 5.02 mm in total length, and the median fin fold in the abdomen extended forward to two thirds or beyond of the yolk sac at 50 hours after hatching. Simultaneously, the eye balls and mouth also appeared. After 3 days, the yolk sac nearly disappeared, and the larvae (5.4 mm in total length) with perfect eye balls began to swim for themselves for the first time. Also, the specialization between the gill arches and the ailmentary canal, the development of each fins except dorsal fin as well as the blood circulation obviously distinguished in this stage. The larvae whose total length was 5.68 mm was very brisk: also, the development of the dorsal fin rudiment, nearly perfect formation of each organs and the function of the upper and lower jaws were noticeably observed 5 days after hatching.
