The synthesis of glass-ceramic materials from glasses based on industrial wastes or natural rocks their physical properties were studied. Glasses of composition, CaO14.7∼16.1, MgO7.4∼9.0, Al2O38.3∼19.3, SiO2 48.9∼51.0wt% were prepared from domestic blast furnace slag, serpentine, sea sand and etc. with additions of chromic oxide, and fluoride as nucleating agent. The glasses were subjected to controlled heat treatments and yielded fine microstructure of glass-ceramics which were composed of monocrystalline phase of aluminous diopside. X-ray diffraction techniques were adopted to identify the crystalline phases and to determine the degree of crystallization quantitatively. Density, coefficient of thermal expansion, young's modulus, microhardness and modulus of rupture were measured and the resulting properties were discussed in terms of the heat-treatment conditions, the degree of crystallization, species of crystaline phase, the microstructures formed in glass-cramics and the chemical compositions of mother glasses.
Glass ceramics were made from coal bottom ash by adding CaO and $Li_2O$ as glass modifiers and $TiO_2$ as a nucleating agent in a process of melting and quenching followed by a thermal treatment. The surface of the glass ceramics has 1.6 times more $Li_2O$ compared to the inner matrix. When $TiO_2$ was not added or when only 2 wt% was added, the surface parts of the glass ceramics were crystalline with a thickness close to $130{\mu}m$. In addition, the matrixes showed only the glass phase and not the crystalline phase. However, doping of $TiO_2$ from 4 wt% to 10 wt% began to create small crystalline phases in the matrix with an increase in the quantity of the crystalline. The matrix microstructure of glass ceramics containing $TiO_2$ in excess of 8 wt% was a mixture of dark-gray crystalline and white crystalline parts. These two parts had no considerable difference in terms of composition. It was thought that the crystallization mechanism affects the crystal growth, direction and shape and rather than the existence of two types of crystals.
The crystallization behavior and microstructural change of the glass-ceramics were analyzed as a function of concentration and etching time of the HF solution in order to enhance the degree of crystallinity induced by heterogeneous nucleation of glass of bottom ash containing 15 wt% $Li_2O$. The nucleation site seemed to be generated where the Si ion was eluted. The main crystal phases in the glass-ceramics fabricated in this study were $\beta$-spodumene and $Li_2SiO_3$. The specimens etched with HF of 0.5 vol% within 0~60 seconds showed increased crystalline peak intensities in XRD pattern with etching time compared to no-etched one. Also the crystal size and crystal occupancy in the glass matrix observed by SEM were increased with etching time. For the glass-ceramics etched with 1.0 and 2.0 vol% HF solution, the etching time over 10 s was not effective to increase the crystallinity. From this study, it was found that the glass-ceramics with the higher crystallinity could be obtained by HF-etching followed by heat treatment process, even though the nucleating agent or 2-stages thermal treatment process were not used.
In Li0.4Ca0.05AlP0.5Si0.75O4.5 composition glass, glass-ceramic having a near 100% crystallinity after nucleation heat treatment of 74$0^{\circ}C$/2 h and crystallization heat treatment of 90$0^{\circ}C$/2 h and in-situ TiO2 whisker reinforced glass-ceramic after heat treatment of 105$0^{\circ}C$ for 20 h were fabricated with the addition of 4% TiO2 as a nucleating agent. With these materials a ball-on-disc type wear test was conducted in order to examine the effect of TiO2 whisker prepcipitation on ambient and high temperature wear properties of the glass-ceramic. Wear test results indicated that all specimens exhibited micro-fracture wear mechanism in ambient temperature. As temperature increased the wear rates of the materials were increased. However the in-situ TiO2 whisker reinforced glass-ceramic exhibited the lowest wear rate over the test temperature range. This resulted from the improvement of harness and fracture toughness of the material as the glass converted into the glass-ceramic followed by precipitation of TiO2 whiskers throughout the glass-ceramic matrix.
The crystallization behavior of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) in the presence and absence of polypyrrole nanoparticles (PPy NPs) was investigated in terms of the heterogeneous nucleation effect of PPy NPs using FTIR, X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimeter and polarized optical microscope analysis. PPy NPs were prepared by dispersion polymerization method stabilized by PVA in aqueous solution. A polymer nanocomposite with uniform dispersity could be readily obtained due to the enhanced compatibility between the filler and matrix. Compared with the PPy NP-absent PVA, the PPy NP/PVA nanocomposite exhibited an enhanced degree of crystallinity. The degree of crystallinity increased up to 17% at the PPy NP concentration of 1 wt%, compared to the pristine PVA. The PPy NP acted as an effective nucleating agent during the crystallization process, thereby enhancing the degree and rate of crystallization. The kinetics study of the crystallization also revealed the decreased value of the Avrami coefficient in the case of the PPy NP/PVA nanocomposite.
The polypropylene/polyamide elastomer (PP/PAE) blends were prepared by melt mixing. PP and PAE in PP/ PAE were immiscible completely. The size of PAE domains was large and the clear gap in the interface between PP and PAE existed, which did not meet the conditions enhancing toughness of polymers by elastomer. Therefore, maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene (MP) was used to improve the miscibility between PP and PAE. The miscibility between PP and PAE was improved and the size of dispersed phase PAE decreased by introducing MP. The crystallization of PP became easier by introducing PAE as a nucleating agent. With the increase of PAE content, the melt-crystallization temperatures of PP components in PP/PAE/MP blends increased gradually. The melt-crystallization of the polytetramethylene oxide segment of PAE component in PP/PAE blends were hampered by PP component. In addition, PAE can enhance significantly the toughness of PP, and the tensile strength and modulus did not decrease.
The current work investigates the effects of nucleation heat treatments, on the microstructure and mechanical properties of a novel silicate glass in $Li_2O-BaO-SiO_2$ system with 1 mol% $P_2O_5$ as nucleating agent. As-cast glass was exposed to nucleation heat treatments at $490-550^{\circ}C$ for 1-3 h. The microstructural examination was performed by SEM/EDS. The highest Vickers microhardness was determined to be 650 Hv for the sample heat treated at $550^{\circ}C$ for 1 h. The increase in the nucleation time also affected Vickers microhardness and the highest one was determined to be 600 Hv after nucleation for 3 h. The fracture toughness, $K_{IC}$ reached $2.51MPa.m^{1/2}$ after nucleation at $550^{\circ}C$ for 1 h. The nucleation temperatures had a more pronounced effect on the fracture toughnesses in comparison to nucleation times. The indentation toughness data was used to determine Weibull parameters from Ln ln [1/(1-P)]-$lnK_{IC}$ plots. Weibull modulus, m of the samples nucleated at 500, 510, 530, $550^{\circ}C$ for 1h. and $540^{\circ}C$ for 2 h. were determined similarly to be 3.8, 3.5, 4.7 and 3.9, respectively. The rest of the samples indicated higher Weibull moduli, which may be attributed to the formations of microcracks due to the mismatch in between newly formed crystals and remaining glassy matrix.
Mixtures type PCM, $H_2O$-NaOH that has relatively large capacity of the latent heat and long duration of phase change temperature was developed and experimentally analyzed for the low temperature storage of the food and medical products. The results could be summarized as follows; 1. Borax as nucleating agent and acrylic polymer as thickening agent were added to $H_2O$ to prevent the supercooling and phase separation. 2. Phase change (solid$\leftrightarrows$liquid) duration of $H_2O$ added with NaOH was prolonged longer 50% than that of pure $H_2O$. 3. Phase change temperature of the latent heat material, $H_2O$-NaOH was $1.5\sim2^{\circ}C$ the maximum latent Heat was 279 kJ/kg at the NaOH addition of 1.3 wt.%. 4. The specific heat of $H_2O$-NaOH at the solid and liquid state was increased in proportion to the wt.% of NaOH, when NaOH of $1.15\sim1.60$ wt.% was added to $H_2O$, the specific heat of the solid state was increased from 3.19 kJ/kg to 5.84 kJ/kg and that of liquid state from 7.8 kJ/kg to 10.28 kJ/kg. 5. When NaOH of $1.15\sim1.60$ wt.% was added to $H_2O$, the total heat storage capacity composed of sensible and latent heat was $313\sim331.3$ kJ/kg and the maximum heat storage capacity was occurred at NaOH addition of 1.30 wt. %.
