  • Shank skin color of Korean native chicken (KNC) shows large color variations. It varies from white, yellow, green, bluish or grey to black, whilst in the majority of European breeds the shanks are typically yellow-colored. Three shank skin color-related traits (i.e., lightness [$L^*$], redness [$a^*$], and yellowness [$b^*$]) were measured by a spectrophotometer in 585 progeny from 68 nuclear families in the KNC resource population. We performed genome scan linkage analysis to identify loci that affect quantitatively measured shank skin color traits in KNC. All these birds were genotyped with 167 DNA markers located throughout the 26 autosomes. The SOLAR program was used to conduct multipoint variance-component quantitative trait locus (QTL) analyses. We detected a major QTL that affects $b^*$ value (logarithm of odds [LOD] = 47.5, $p=1.60{\times}10^{-49}$) on GGA24 (GGA for Gallus gallus). At the same location, we also detected a QTL that influences $a^*$ value (LOD = 14.2, $p=6.14{\times}10^{-16}$). Additionally, beta-carotene dioxygenase 2 (BCDO2), the obvious positional candidate gene under the linkage peaks on GGA24, was investigated by the two association tests: i.e., measured genotype association (MGA) and quantitative transmission disequilibrium test (QTDT). Significant associations were detected between BCDO2 g.9367 A>C and $a^*$ ($P_{MGA}=1.69{\times}10^{-28}$; $P_{QTDT}=2.40{\times}10^{-25}$). The strongest associations were between BCDO2 g.9367 A>C and $b^*$ ($P_{MGA}=3.56{\times}10^{-66}$; $P_{QTDT}=1.68{\times}10^{-65}$). However, linkage analyses conditional on the single nucleotide polymorphism indicated that other functional variants should exist. Taken together, we demonstrate for the first time the linkage and association between the BCDO2 locus on GGA24 and quantitatively measured shank skin color traits in KNC.

  • Objective: Evaluation of exercise effects in racehorses is important in horseracing industry and animal health care. In this study, we compared metabolic patterns between before and after exercise to screen metabolic biomarkers for exercise effects in thoroughbreds. Methods: The concentration of metabolites in muscle, plasma, and urine was measured by $^1H$ nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy analysis and the relative metabolite levels in the three samples were compared between before and after exercise. Subsequently, multivariate data analysis based on the metabolic profiles was performed using orthogonal partial least square discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA) and variable important plots and t-test was used for basic statistical analysis. Results: From $^1H$ NMR spectroscopy analysis, 35, 25, and 34 metabolites were detected in the muscle, plasma, and urine. Aspartate, betaine, choline, cysteine, ethanol, and threonine were increased over 2-fold in the muscle; propionate and trimethylamine were increased over 2-fold in the plasma; and alanine, glycerol, inosine, lactate, and pyruvate were increased over 2-fold whereas acetoacetate, arginine, citrulline, creatine, glutamine, glutarate, hippurate, lysine, methionine, phenylacetylglycine, taurine, trigonelline, trimethylamine, and trimethylamine N-oxide were decreased below 0.5-fold in the urine. The OPLS-DA showed clear separation of the metabolic patterns before and after exercise in the muscle, plasma, and urine. Statistical analysis showed that after exercise, acetoacetate, arginine, glutamine, hippurate, phenylacetylglycine trimethylamine, trimethylamine N-oxide, and trigonelline were significantly decreased and alanine, glycerol, inosine, lactate, and pyruvate were significantly increased in the urine (p<0.05). Conclusion: In conclusion, we analyzed integrated metabolic patterns in the muscle, plasma, and urine before and after exercise in racehorses. We found changed patterns of metabolites in the muscle, plasma, and urine of racehorses before and after exercise.

  • The turbine is an important component and has a significant impact on the thermodynamic efficiency of the organic Rankine cycle. A precise preliminary design is essential to developing efficient turbines. In addition, performance analysis and structural analysis are needed to evaluate the performance and structural safety. However, there are only a few exclusive studies on the development process of the radial inflow turbines for the organic Rankine cycle (ORC). In this study, a preliminary design of the ORC radial inflow turbine was performed. Subsequently, the performance and structural analysis were also carried out. The RTDM, which was developed as an in-house code, was used in the preliminary design process. The results of the performance analysis were found to be in good agreement with target performances. Structural analysis of the designed turbine was also carried out in order to determine whether the material selection for this study is suitable for the flow conditions of the designed turbine, and it was found that the selected aluminum alloy is suitable for the designed turbine. However, the reliability of the preliminary design algorithms and numerical methods should be strictly verified by an actual experimental test.

  • Experiments on laminar mixed convection in a vertical pipe were performed for the Re range 1,000-3,000, the $Gr_H$ range $10^5-10^8$, the Pr range 2,000-7,000, and aspect ratio range 1-7. Using the analogy concept, heat transfer systems were simulated by mass transfer systems. A cupric acid.copper sulfate electroplating system was adopted as the mass transfer system, and the mass transfer rates were measured. The measured Nu values were far greater than those previously reported because of the large value of pr in this experiment. As the aspect ratio in this study was not sufficiently large for the flow to be fully developed, the test results were similar to those for mixed convection on a vertical plate rather than that inside a long vertical pipe. It was concluded that the behavior of laminar mixed convection of a developing flow in a vertical pipe at a low aspect ratio and low $Gr_H$ is similar to that of laminar mixed convection in the vertical plate. As the aspect ratio and $Gr_H$ increase, the laminar mixed convection phenomena becomes similar to that observed in a fully developed flow in the vertical pipe.

  • The prevalence of Toxoplasma gondii infection in birds has epidemiological significance because birds are indeed considered as a good indicator of environmental contamination by T. gondii oocysts. In this study, the prevalence of T. gondii in 313 house sparrows in Lanzhou, northwestern China was assayed by the modified agglutination test (MAT). Antibodies to T. gondii were positive in 39 (12.46%) of 313 samples (MAT titer ${\geq}$ 1:5). Tissues of heart, brain, and lung from the 39 seropositive house sparrows were tested for T. gondii DNA, 11 of which were found to be positive for the T. gondii B1 gene by PCR amplification. These positive DNA samples were typed at 9 genetic markers, including 8 nuclear loci, i.e., SAG1, 5'- and 3'-SAG2, alternative SAG2, SAG3, GRA6, L358, PK1, c22-8 and an apicoplast locus Apico. Of them, 4 isolates were genotyped with complete data for all loci, and 2 genotypes (Type II variants; ToxoDB #3 and a new genotype) were identified. These results showed that there is a potential risk for human infection with T. gondii in this region. To our knowledge, this is the first report of T. gondii seroprevalence in house sparrows in China.

  • Two-phase vapor-liquid flows exist in many shell and tube heat exchangers such as condensers, evaporators, and nuclear steam generators. To understand the fluid dynamic forces acting on a structure subjected to a two-phase flow, it is essential to obtain detailed information about the characteristics of a two-phase flow. The characteristics of a two-phase flow and the flow parameters were introduced, and then, an experiment was performed to evaluate the pressure loss in the tube bundles and the fluid-dynamic force acting on the cylinder owing to the pressure distribution. A two-phase flow was pre-mixed at the entrance of the test section, and the experiments were undertaken using a normal triangular array of cylinders subjected to a two-phase cross-flow. The pressure loss along the flow direction in the tube bundles was measured to calculate the two-phase friction multiplier, and the multiplier was compared with the analytical value. Furthermore, the circular distributions of the pressure on the cylinders were measured. Based on the distribution and the fundamental theory of two-phase flow, the effects of the void fraction and mass flux per unit area on the pressure coefficient and the drag coefficient were evaluated. The drag coefficient was calculated by integrating the measured pressure on the tube by a numerical method. It was found that for low mass fluxes, the measured two-phase friction multipliers agree well with the analytical results, and good agreement for the effect of the void fraction on the drag coefficients, as calculated by the measured pressure distributions, is shown qualitatively, as compared to the existing experimental results.

  • In this paper a computer program was developed, which simulates the Li reduction process of PWR spent fuel, and the amount of a produced metal or chloride compound was calculated at the various amount of Li with the program. It establishes a database, which is composed of some characteristics related to a chemical reaction equation and thermodynamic data, and it calculates the transformed rate of PWR spent fuel oxide at the certain amount of Li by using the database as input data. As the results of the performance test of the program, it was validated that the transformed values of oxides, except for $Eu_2O_3$ and $Sm_2O_3$, were almost the same to within about a 6 % error with those calculated by the previous code and that the calculated amount of Li was also exactly consistent with the theoretical one, which is used for a complete reaction of each oxide in a single chemical reaction. A relationship between Li and the transformed metal of each oxide was analyzed on the basis of the quantities calculated with the verified development program. Of the results, when the amount of Li was given to be 250 mole, the 83.73 percentage of $UO_2$ was transformed into U while the remainder was still to be $UO_2$. In addition, it was appeared that the 297 mole of Li was needed to completely convert $UO_2$ into U.

  • A dynamic compartment model is presented to predict the contamination level of agricultural plant by $^{137}C_s$ as a result of a soil deposition. The model considered the processes of a percolation, soil mixing by a plowing before transplanting, plant uptake, leaching to a deep soil, and fixation to a clay mineral. The effects of the soil properties (pH, clay mineral, organic matter content, and exchangeable K), which are spatially varied, on a plant uptake and the leaching rates of $^{137}C_s$ in a root zone soil were modeled by the Absalom model. To test the validity of the model, the $^{137}C_s$ aggregated transfer factors(TFa) for rice plants were compared with those observed from some simulated $^{137}C_s$ soil deposition experiments, which were carried out with respect to rice plants cultivated in seventeen paddy soils of different properties for two consecutive years. Observed $^{137}C_s$ TFa values of the rice plants did not show an evident trend for the pH and clay content of the soil properties, while they increased with an increasing organic matter content or a decreasing exchangeable K concentration. Predicted $^{137}C_s$ TFa values of the rice plants were found to be comparable with those observed.
