  • The increasing concern over radiation exposure in the nuclear industry has fostered agrressive efforts to reduce the levels of radiation exposure. One area of the effot to reduce the radiation exposure is the development of a remote radiation monitoring system. Remote radiation monitoring can serve many benificaial functions reduce exposure to radiation by plant personnel, impruve the quality of the data that is collected and recognize the radiation environment easily. Radiation mapping system gives a good information that represents radiation level distribution. The system we have developed consists of a data acquistion parts, mobile robot and remote control parts. Data acquisition parts consist of radiation detection module and vision acquistion module which collect radiation data, visiion data and distance information. In remote control parts, the acquision data are processed and displayed. We have constructed radiation mapping image by overlaying the vision and radiation data. The radiation mapping techniques for displaying the results of the survey in an easily comprehendable form will facilitate a better understanding of the radiation environment in the facility. This system can reduce workers radiation exposure and aid to help work plan, so it has significant benifits in cost and safety.

  • 원자력발전소 내 원자로의 유지보수 작업을 수행하는 수중로봇은 고준위 방사선에 노출되고, 이로 인해 전자 장치의 오동작 및 고장이 유발될 수 있다. 따라서 허용 방사선량을 초과하지 않도록 피폭되는 누적 방사선량을 실시간으로 모니터링하는 장치가 필수적이다. 본 연구에서는 펄스형의 SiC 포토 다이오드와 선량 기억형인 MOSFET를 다중 방사선 센서로 사용하여 넘은 범위의 방사선 준위의 측정이 가능하고 측정 신뢰도가 향상된 고준위 방사선 측정기를 구현하였다. 이 장치는 측정 원리가 상이한 두 센서를 동일한 방사선 측정에 이용함으로써 방사선 측정의 안정성과 정확성이 향상된 것이 특징이다.

  • During the period of retubing work for the licensing renewal, the fuel channels, calandria tubes and feeders of CANDU Reactors will be replaced, and calandria visual examination will be performed. This period is a unique opportunity to inspect the inside of the calandria. The visual inspection for the calandria vessel and its internals of Wolsong NPP is scheduled for confirming the calandria integrity. The first visual inspection for the calandria is planned in Pt. Lepreau led by AECL. The visual inspection for Wolsong NPP, led by NETEC(Nuclear Engineering & Technology Institute) of KHNP, will employ 3D laser scanner and 3D CAD Mock-up for the first time in the world, in addition to a conventional video camera. The inspection system is composed of a robot with the 3D laser scanner, a video camera and a hardness meter.

  • Nowadays, there are many situations which the conventional control system can't be applied any more (e.g. nuclear waste disposal sites, radioactive laboratories, the deep ocean and the vacuum of the outer space). New control system must be considered such as supervisory control system in those environment. Using computer graphic robot simulation, supervisory control which can cope with this situation is compared to manual control. As a performance measure of these comparisons, task time and task error are used. And task difficulties and time delay are considered as a variation factor. According to the result of this study, supervisory control is superior to manual control generally. Especially in the situation including task difficulties and time delay, the superiority is much greater.

  • In the midst of disaster, such as an earthquake or a nuclear radiation exposure area, there are huge risks to send human crews. Many robotic researchers have studied to send UGVs in order to replace human crews at dangerous environments. So far, two-dimensional camera information has been widely used for teleoperation of UGVs. Recently, three-dimensional information based teleoperations are attempted to compensate the limitations of camera information based teleoperation. In this paper, the 3D map information of indoor and outdoor environments reconstructed in real-time is utilized in the UGV teleoperation. Further, we apply the LTE communication technology to endure the stability of the teleoperation even under the deteriorate environment. The proposed teleoperation system is performed at explosive disposal missions and their feasibilities could be verified through completion of that missions using the UGV with the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team of Busan Port Security Corporation.

A Study on Analog and Digital Meter Recognition Based on Image Processing Technique (영상처리 기법에 기반한 아날로그 및 디지틀 계기의 자동인식에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this paper is to build a computer vision system that endows an autonomous mobile robot the ability of automatic measuring of the analog and digital meters installed in nuclear power plant(NPP). This computer vision system takes a significant part in the organization of automatic surveillance and measurement system having the instruments and gadzets in NPP under automatic control situation. In the meter image captured by the camera, the meter area is sorted out using mainly the thresholding and the region labeling and the meter value recognition process follows. The positions and the angles of the needles in analog meter images are detected using the projection based method. In the case of digital meters, digits and points are extracted and finally recognized through the neural network classifier. To use available database containing relevant information about meters and to build fully automatic meter recognition system, the segmentation and recognition of the function-name in the meter printed around the meter area should be achieved for enhancing identification reliability. For thus, the function- name of the meter needs to be identified and furthermore the scale distributions and values are also required to be analyzed for building the more sophisticated system and making the meter recognition fully automatic.

Characterizing Strategy of Emotional sympathetic Robots in Animation and Movie - Focused on Appearance and Behavior tendency Analysis - (애니메이션 및 영화에 등장하는 정서교감형 로봇의 캐릭터라이징 전략 - 외형과 행동 경향성 분석을 중심으로 -)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze conditions that robots depicted in cinematographic works like animations or movies sympathize with and form an attachment with the nuclear person and organize characterizing strategies for emotional sympathetic robots. Along with the development of technology, the areas of artificial intelligence and robots are no longer considered to belong to science fiction but as realistic issues. Therefore, this author assumes that the expressive characteristics of emotional sympathetic robots created by cinematographic works should be used as meaningful factors in expressively embodying human-friendly service robots to be distributed widely afterwards, that is, in establishing the features of characters. To lay the grounds for it, this research has begun. As the subjects of analysis, this researcher has chosen robot characters whose emotional intimacy with the main person is clearly observed among those found in movies and animations produced after the 1920 when robot's contemporary concept was declared. Also, to understand robots' appearance and behavioral tendency, this study (1) has classified robots' external impressions into five types (human-like, cartoon, tool-like, artificial bring, pet or creature) and (2) has classified behavioral tendencies considered to be the outer embodiment of personality by using DiSC, the tool to diagnose behavioral patterns. Meanwhile, it has been observed that robots equipped with high emotional intimacy are all strongly independent about their duties and indicate great emotional acceptance. Therefore, 'influence' and 'Steadiness' types show great emotional acceptance, the influencing type tends to be highly independent, and the 'Conscientiousness' type tends to indicate less emotional acceptance and independency in general. Yet, according to the analysis on external impressions, appearance factors hardly have any significant relationship with emotional sympathy. It implies that regarding the conditions of robots equipped with great emotional sympathy, emotional sympathy grounded on communication exerts more crucial effects than first impression similarly to the process of forming interpersonal relationship in reality. Lastly, to study the characters of robots, it is absolutely needed to have consilient competence embracing different areas widely. This author also has felt that only with design factors or personality factors, it is hard to estimate robot characters and also analyze a vast amount of information demanded in sympathy with humans entirely. However, this researcher will end this thesis as the foundation for it expecting that the general artistic value of animations can be used preciously afterwards in developing robots that have to be studied interdisciplinarily.

A Study of the Feature Classification and the Predictive Model of Main Feed-Water Flow for Turbine Cycle (주급수 유량의 형상 분류 및 추정 모델에 대한 연구)

  • Corrective thermal performance analysis is required for thermal power plants to determine performance status of turbine cycle. We developed classification method for main feed water flow to make precise correction for performance analysis based on ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) PTC (Performance Test Code). The classification is based on feature identification of status of main water flow. Also we developed predictive algorithms for corrected main feed-water through Support Vector Machine (SVM) Model for each classified feature area. The results was compared to estimations using Neural Network(NN) and Kernel Regression(KR). The feature classification and predictive model of main feed-water flow provides more practical methods for corrective thermal performance analysis of turbine cycle.

3D Printing of Tungsten-Polymer Composites for Radiation Shielding (방사선 차폐를 위한 3D 프린팅용 텅스텐-고분자 복합체 설계)

  • The materials with a high processiblity for radiation shielding, in particular for 3D printable materials, are highly demanding for producing robots working in nuclear plants and designing customized personal protection equipment. In this study, we suspend tungsten particles in a polymeric matrix of either PLA or ABS to compose tungsten-polymer composite filaments; PLA and ABS are widely used for conventional FDM-based 3D printing. The weight fraction of tungsten particles can be increased up to 50% without forming macroscopic aggregates. The composite filaments can be used to print 3D architectures with any shape and geometry. To demonstrate one of potential applications, we print parts for robot actuator and assemble them to protect PCB against gamma ray.

Development of Real Time Radiation Dosimeter Using RF Communication Function (RF 방식의 실시간 선량계 구현)

  • In this paper, we developed a module that can execute the data acquisition of the real-time measured radiant rays in the specific part of the nuclear power station. This module that includes the RF communication function, paces around the power station, being loaded on robot and can obtain the generated radiant rays in the various places through the detecting devices. It is considered that this new developed radiant rays acquisition method will have the higher degree of efficiency as compared with the existing method and reduce the expenses of the maintenance and repair work.
