Prediction of damage caused by low-velocity impact in laminated composite plate is an important problem faced by designers using composites. Not only the inplane stresses but also the interlaminar normal and shear stresses playa role in estimating the damage caused. The work reported here is an effort in getting better predictions of damage in composite plate using DNS approach. In the DNS model, we discretize the composite plates through separate modeling of fiber and matrix for the local microscopic analysis. Through comparison with the homogenized model. In the view of microscopic mechanics with DNS model, interlaminar stress behaviors in the inside of composite materials is investigated and compared with the results of the homogenized model which has been used in the conventional approach of impact analysis.
The behavior of the work materials in the chip-tool interface in extremely high strain rates and temperatures is more that of viscous liquids than that of normal solid metals. In these circumstances the principles of fluid mechanics can be invoked to describe the metal flow in the neighborhood of the cutting edge. In the present paper an Eulerian finite element model is presented that simulates metal flow in the vicinity of the cutting edge when machining a low carbon steel with carbide cutting tool. The work material is assumed to obey visco-plastic (Bingham solid) constitutive law and Von Mises criterion. Heat generation is included in the model, assuming adiabatic conditions within each element. the mechanical and thermal properties of the work material are accepted to vary with the temperature. The model is based on the virtual work-stream function formulation, emphasis is given on analyzing the formation of the stagnant metal zone ahead of the cutting edge. The model predicts flow field characteristics such as material velocity effective stress and strain-rate distributions as well as built-up layer configuration
This paper investigates the effect of material properties on the formability of sheet metals based on the Marciniak-Kuczynski model (M-K model). The hardening behavior of the material is modeled as the Hollomon model with the strain rate effect. The yield surfaces are constructed with Hosford79 yield function. The material properties considered in this study include the R-value, the strain hardening exponent, the strain rate hardening exponent, and the crystal structure of the material. The effect of the crystal structure on formability is roughly expressed as the change of the yield surface by varying the value of the exponent in Hosford79 yield function. Results show that the R-value affects neither the magnitude nor the shape of right hand side of forming limit diagrams (FLDs). Higher strain hardening exponent and higher strain rate hardening exponent improve the formability of sheet metals because they stabilize the forming processes.
Simulations are currently an essential tool to develop and test wireless sensor networks (WSNs) protocols and to analyze future WSNs applications performance. Researchers often simulate their proposals rather than deploying high-cost test-beds or develop complex mathematical analysis. However, simulation results rely on physical layer assumptions, which are not usually accurate enough to capture the real behavior of a WSN. Such an issue can lead to mistaken or questionable results. Besides, most of the envisioned applications for WSNs consider the nodes to be at the ground level. However, there is a lack of radio propagation characterization and validation by measurements with nodes at ground level for actual sensor hardware. In this paper, we propose to use a low-computational cost, two slope, log-normal pathloss near ground outdoor channel model at 868 MHz in WSN simulations. The model is validated by extensive real hardware measurements obtained in different scenarios. In addition, accurate model parameters are provided. This model is compared with the well-known one slope path-loss model. We demonstrate that the two slope log-normal model provides more accurate WSN simulations at almost the same computational cost as the single slope one. It is also shown that the radio propagation characterization heavily depends on the adjusted model parameters for a target deployment scenario: The model parameters have a considerable impact on the average number of neighbors and on the network connectivity.
The behavior of shear connectors plays a significant role in maintaining the required strength of a composite beam in normal and hazardous conditions. Various types of shear connectors are available and being utilized in the construction industry according to their use. Channel connectors are a suitable replacement for conventional shear connectors. These connectors have been tested under different types of loading at ambient temperature; however, the behavior of these connectors at elevated temperatures has not been studied. This investigation proposes a numerical analysis approach to estimate the behavior of channel connectors under fire and compare it with the numerical analysis performed in headed stud and Perfobond shear connectors subjected to fire. This paper first reviews the mechanism of various types of shear connectors and then proposes a non-linear thermo-mechanical finite element (FE) model of channel shear connectors embedded in high-strength concrete (HSC) subjected to fire. Initially, an accurate nonlinear FE model of the specimens tested at ambient temperature was developed to investigate the strength of the channel-type connectors embedded in an HSC slab. The outcomes were verified with the experimental study performed on the testing of channel connectors at ambient temperature by Shariati et al. (2012). The FE model at ambient temperature was extended to identify the behavior of channel connectors subjected to fire. A comparative study is performed to evaluate the performance of channel connectors against headed stud and Perfobond shear connectors. The channel connectors were found to be a more economical and easy-to-apply alternative to conventional shear connectors.

Electricity price forecasting has become an integral part of power system operation and control. In this paper, a wavelet transform (WT) based neural network (NN) model to forecast price profile in a deregulated electricity market has been presented. The historical price data has been decomposed into wavelet domain constitutive sub series using WT and then combined with the other time domain variables to form the set of input variables for the proposed forecasting model. The behavior of the wavelet domain constitutive series has been studied based on statistical analysis. It has been observed that forecasting accuracy can be improved by the use of WT in a forecasting model. Multi-scale analysis from one to seven levels of decomposition has been performed and the empirical evidence suggests that accuracy improvement is highest at third level of decomposition. Forecasting performance of the proposed model has been compared with (i) a heuristic technique, (ii) a simulation model used by Ontario's Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO), (iii) a Multiple Linear Regression (MLR) model, (iv) NN model, (v) Auto Regressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) model, (vi) Dynamic Regression (DR) model, and (vii) Transfer Function (TF) model. Forecasting results show that the performance of the proposed WT based NN model is satisfactory and it can be used by the participants to respond properly as it predicts price before closing of window for submission of initial bids.
