비선형 변위모드법을 적용한 복합구조물의 내진성능평가 (Evaluation of Seismic Performance of Mixed Building Structures by using the Nonlinear Displacement Mode Method)

  • 구조물의 내진 성능을 정확히 평가하기 위해서는 비선형 시각 이력 해석이 필요하지만 실용성과 단순성 측면에서 약산법이 대안이 될 수 있으며, 다층 구조물을 등가 단자유도계로 치환할 때 다층 구조물의 모드벡터는 구조물이 탄성 또는 탄소성 상태에 상관없이 탄성 상태에서의 모드 형상으로 가정되지만, 항복이 발생한 후 증가하는 하중단계에서 구조물은 비탄성으로 되기 때문에 변위 모드 특성들도 변화된다. 본 논문은 항복 이후의 구조물의 모드 변화를 고려한 비선형 변위모드를 이용하여 다자유도계를 등가 단자유도계로 변환하는 방법을 제시하였으며, 변환된 등가 단자유도계의 변위응답을 근거로 추정한 복합 구조물의 최상층 변위와 실제 지진교란을 받는 복합 구조물의 비선형 동적해석에 의한 최상층 변위를 비교함으로서 복합구조물의 지진응답예측을 위한 비선형 변위모드법의 적용성과 신뢰성을 검토하였다.

Lateral-torsional seismic behaviour of plan unsymmetric buildings

  • Torsional response of buildings is attributed to poor structural configurations in plan, which arises due to two factors - torsional eccentricity and torsional flexibility. Usually, building codes address effects due to the former. This study examines both of these effects. Buildings with torsional eccentricity (e.g., those with large eccentricity) and with torsional flexibility (those with torsional mode as a fundamental mode) demand large deformations of vertical elements resisting lateral loads, especially those along the building perimeter in plan. Lateral-torsional responses are studied of unsymmetrical buildings through elastic and inelastic analyses using idealised single-storey building models (with two degrees of freedom). Displacement demands on vertical elements distributed in plan are non-uniform and sensitive to characteristics of both structure and earthquake ground motion. Limits are proposed to mitigate lateral-torsional effects, which guides in proportioning vertical elements and restricts amplification of lateral displacement in them and to avoid torsional mode as the first mode. Nonlinear static and dynamic analyses of multi-storey buildings are used to validate the limits proposed.

Identification of nonlinear elastic structures using empirical mode decomposition and nonlinear normal modes

  • The empirical mode decomposition (EMD) method is well-known for its ability to decompose a multi-component signal into a set of intrinsic mode functions (IMFs). The method uses a sifting process in which local extrema of a signal are identified and followed by a spline fitting approximation for decomposition. This method provides an effective and robust approach for decomposing nonlinear and non-stationary signals. On the other hand, the IMF components do not automatically guarantee a well-defined physical meaning hence it is necessary to validate the IMF components carefully prior to any further processing and interpretation. In this paper, an attempt to use the EMD method to identify properties of nonlinear elastic multi-degree-of-freedom structures is explored. It is first shown that the IMF components of the displacement and velocity responses of a nonlinear elastic structure are numerically close to the nonlinear normal mode (NNM) responses obtained from two-dimensional invariant manifolds. The IMF components can then be used in the context of the NNM method to estimate the properties of the nonlinear elastic structure. A two-degree-of-freedom shear-beam building model is used as an example to illustrate the proposed technique. Numerical results show that combining the EMD and the NNM method provides a possible means for obtaining nonlinear properties in a structure.

A Study of a Nonlinear Viscoelastic Model for Elastomeric Bushing in Radial Mode

  • An elastomeric bushing is a device used in automotive suspension systems to reduce the load transmitted from the wheel to the frame of the vehicle. The relation between the load applied to the shaft or sleeve and the relative displacement of elastomeric bushing is nonlinear and exhibits features of viscoelasticity. A load-displacement relation for elastomeric bushing is important fur dynamic numerical simulations. A boundary value problem fur the bushing response leads to the load-displacement relation, which requires complex calculations. Therefore, by modifying the constitutive equation for a nonlinear viscoelastic incompressible material developed by Lianis, the data for the elastomeric bushing material was obtained and this data was used to derive the new load-displacement relation for radial response of the bushing. After the load relaxation function for the bushing was obtained from the step displacement control test, Pipkin-Rogers model was developed. Solutions were allowed for comparison between the results of the modified Lianis model and those of the proposed model. It was shown that the proposed Pipkin-Rogers model was in very good agreement with the modified Lianis model.

Extension of Direct Displacement-Based Design to Include Higher-Mode Effects in Planar Reinforced Concrete Frame Buildings

  • Now that problems with force-based seismic design have been clearly identified, design is inclined toward displacement-based methods. One such widely used method is Direct-Displacement-Based Design (DDBD). Yet, one of the shortcomings of DDBD is considering higher-mode amplification of story shear, moments, and displacements using equations obtained from limited parametric studies of regular planar frames. In this paper, a different approach to account for higher-mode effects is proposed. This approach determines the lateral secant stiffness of the building frames that fulfill the allowable inter-story drift without exceeding the desired story displacements. Using the stiffness, an elastic response spectrum analysis is carried out to determine elastic higher-mode force effects. These force effects are then combined with DDBD-obtained first-mode force effects using the appropriate modal superposition method so that design can be performed. The proposed design procedure is verified using Nonlinear Time History Analysis (NTHA) of twelve planar frames in four categories accounting for mass and stiffness irregularity along the height. In general, the NTHA response outputs compared well with the allowable limits of the performance objective. Thus, it fulfills the aim of minimizing the use of NTHA for planar frame buildings, thereby saving computational resources and effort.

  • 경골 목조 트러스를 접합하는데 가장 널리 사용되는 메탈 플레이트 접합부의 거동을 해석하기 위한 연구가 많이 수행되어왔다. 유한요소법을 사용한 해석은 그 연구들중의 하나이다. 선형 모델을 사용한 유한요소법은 하중-변위 곡선의 초기 경사를 예측하는데는 유효하게 사용될 수 있다. 하지만, 하중이 증가할수록 예측된 변위는 실험치에 비해 과예측이 된다. 따라서 선형 모델을 비선형부분을 예측하는데는 사용할 수 없다. 실제 거동을 더욱 정확하게 예측하기 위해, 본 연구에서는 비선형 항을 유한요소 모델에 첨가시켰다. EA와 AA 형태에서는 예측치와 실험치간에 고도의 유사성을 보여주었다. 하지만, EE와 AE 형태에서는 곡선의 비선형 부분에서 실험치와 예측치가 약간의 차이를 보여주었다. 이러한 결과는 슬립의 효과를 충분히 반영하지 못한 것에 기인한 것으로 추측된다. 결과적으로 메틸플레이트 접합부의 거동에 있어서 비선형 해석의 정확도를 증진시키기 위해서는 반드시 슬립의 효과가 고려되어야 할 것이다.

  • The purpose of this study is to survey the shape finding of the plane truss structures under the prescribed displacement mode by the shape analysis. The shape analysis is peformed by the existence condition of a solution and Moore-Penrose generalized inverse matrix, and the prescribed displacement mode is the homologous deformation of structures. The shape analysis of structures is a kind of inverse problem and become the problem of a nonlinear equation. Newton-Raphson method is used to improve the accuracy of approximated solution. To prove the accuracy and the effectiveness of this method, four different shape examples are analyzed.
