  • This research concentrates on the effects of distributions and volume fractions of carbon nanotubes (CNT) on the nonlinear bending behavior of deep cylindrical panels reinforced by functionally graded carbon nanotubes under thermo-mechanical loading, hitherto not reported in the literature. Assuming the effects of shear deformation and moderately high value of the radius-to-side ratio (R/a), based on the first-order shear deformation theory (FSDT) and von Karman type of geometric nonlinearity, the governing system of equations is obtained. The analytical solution of field equations is carried out using the Ritz method together with the Newton-Raphson iterative scheme. The effects of radius-to-side ratio, temperature change, and boundary conditions on the nonlinear response of the functionally graded carbon nanotubes reinforced composite deep cylindrical panel (FG-CNTRC) are investigated. It is concluded that, among the five possible distribution patterns of CNT, FG-V CNTRC deep cylindrical panel is strongest with the highest bending moment and followed by UD, X, O, and Ʌ-ones. Also, considering the present deep cylindrical panel formulation increases the accuracy of the results. Hence, according to the noticeable amount of R/a in FG-CNTRC cylindrical panels, it is mandatory to apply strain-displacement relations of deep cylindrical panels for bending analysis of FG-CNTRC which certainly is desirable for industrial application.

  • This paper presents a study of the nonlinear cylindrical bending of an exponential functionally graded plate (simply called E-FG) with variable thickness. The plate is subjected to uniform pressure loading and his geometric nonlinearity is introduced in the strain-displacement equations based on Von-Karman assumptions. The material properties of functionally graded plates, except the Poisson's ratio, are assumed to vary continuously through the thickness of the plate in accordance with the exponential law distribution; and the solution is obtained using Hamilton's principle for constant plate thickness. In order to analyze functionally graded plate with variable thickness, a numerical solution using finite difference method is used, where parabolic variation of the plate thickness is studied. The results for E-FG plates are given in dimensionless graphical forms; and the effects of material and geometric properties on displacements and normal stresses through the thickness are determined.

  • In this paper, the nonlinear cylindrical bending of simply supported, functionally graded nanocomposite plates reinforced by single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), is studied. The plates are subjected to uniform pressure loading in thermal environments and their geometric nonlinearity is introduced in the strain-displacement equations based on Von-Karman assumptions. The material properties of SWCNTs are assumed to be temperature-dependent and are obtained from molecular dynamics simulations. The material properties of functionally graded carbon nanotube-reinforced composites (FG-CNTCRs) are assumed to be graded in the thickness direction, and are estimated through a micromechanical model. The governing equations are reduced to linear differential equation with nonlinear boundary conditions yielding a simple solution procedure. Numerical results are presented to show the effect of the material distribution on the deflections and stresses.

  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate the buckling characteristics of a conceptually designed KALIMER-150(Korea Advanced LIquid MEtal Reactor, 150MWe) reactor vessel and verify the buckling behavior using the reduced scale cylindrical shell structures. To do this, nonlinear buckling analyses using finite element method and evaluation formulae are carried out. From the results, the KALIMER-150 reactor vessel exhibits a dominant bending buckling mode and is significantly affected by the plastic behavior. The interaction effects with the vertical seismic load cause the lateral buckling load to be slightly decrease. From the results of the buckling experiments using reduced scaled cylindrical shell structures, it is verified that the buckling modes such as pure bending, pure shear, and mixed(bending plus shear) mode clearly appear under a lateral load corresponding to the slenderness ratio of cylinder.

  • This article considers the problems of cylindrical bending of functionally graded plates in which material properties vary through the thickness. The variation of the material properties follows two power-law distributions in terms of the volume fractions of constituents. In addition, this paper considers orthotropic materials rather than isotropic materials. The traction-free condition on the top surface is replaced with the condition of uniform load applied on the top surface. Numerical results are presented to show the effect of the material distribution on the deflections and stresses. Results show that, all other parameters remaining the same, the studied quantities (stress, deflection) of P-FGM and E-FGM plates are always proportional to those of homogeneous isotropic plates. Therefore, one can predict the behaviour of P-FGM and E-FGM plates knowing that of similar homogeneous plates.

  • The linear/nonlinear vibration response of the rotating hybrid cylindrical shell with simply supported boundary condition is studied. The Ritz-Galerkin method is applied to obtain the nonlinear frequency equation, which excludes in-plane and rotatory inertia but includes bending stretching coupling terms. The bifurcation phenomena for the linear frequency and the frequency ratio(nonlinear/linear frequency ratio) are presented. The hybrid cylindrical shells are composed of composite(GFRP, CFRP) metal(aluminium, steel) with symmetric and antisymmetric stacking sequence. The effects of the Coriolis and centrifugal force are considered The results also present the effects of length-to- radies ratio, radius-to-thickness ratio, the circumferential wave number, the stacking sequence, the material property, the initial excitation amplitude and the rotating speed. The present linear frequency results are compared with those of the available literature.

  • In this paper, the nonlinear cylindrical bending behavior of functionally graded nanocomposite plates reinforced by single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) is studied using an efficient and simple refined theory. This theory is based on assumption that the in-plane and transverse displacements consist of bending and shear components in which the bending components do not contribute toward shear forces and, likewise, the shear components do not contribute toward bending moments. The fundamental equations for functionally graded nanocomposite plates are obtained using the Von-Karman theory for large deflections and the solution is obtained by minimization of the total potential energy. The numerical illustrations concern the nonlinear bending response of FG-CNTRC plates under different sets of thermal environmental conditions, from which results for uniformly distributed CNTRC plates are obtained as comparators.

  • This paper analyse the mechanical characteristics of geometrical and material nonlinearity behavior of cylindrical shell roofs subjected to a concentrated load. The shell elements were modeled using 'NISA2016' software as 3D general shell element and 3D composite shell element. The 3D shell element includes deformation due to bending, membrane, membrane-bending coupling and shear perpendicular to the grain effects is suited for modeling moderately thick or thin general shells and laminated composite shells. And The 3D composite shell element consists of a number of layers of perfectly bonded anisotropic and orthotropic materials. The purpose of this research is to analysis the load-deflection curves considering the combined geometric and material nonlinearity of cylindrical shells. In a shallowed cylindrical shell, snap-through curve can be found.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop practical tools for the mechanical design of cylindrical porous media subjected to a broad gap in a hygrothermal environment. The planar axisymmetrical and transient hygrothermoelastic field in a porous hollow cylinder that is exposed to a broad gap of temperature and dissolved moisture content and is free from mechanical constraint on all surfaces is investigated considering the nonlinear coupling between heat and binary moisture and the diffusive properties of both phases of moisture. The system of hygrothermal governing equations is derived for the cylindrical case and solved to illustrate the distributions of hygrothermal-field quantities and the effect of diffusive properties on the distributions. The distribution of the resulting stress is theoretically analyzed based on the fundamental equations for hygrothermoelasticity. The safety hazard because of the analysis disregarding the nonlinear coupling underestimating the stress is illustrated. By comparing the cylinder with an infinitesimal curvature with the straight strip, the significance to consider the existence of curvature, even if it is infinitesimally small, is demonstrated qualitatively and quantitatively. Moreover, by investigating the bending moment, the necessities to consider an actual finite curvature and to perform the transient analysis are illustrated.
