In this paper we deal with a synthesis of flight control system via nonlinear model matching theory. First, the longitudinal and lateral-directional equations of aircraft motion an CCV mode are considered except the assumption "variations on steady straight flight due to disturbances are very small". Next, a design method of the dynamic model matching control system based on Hirschorn's Algorithm is proposed to the above nonlinear system. Finally, the proposed control system is applied to the small sized, high speed aircraft, T-2 on CCV mode and numerical simulations are shown to justify the proposed scheme.ed scheme.

Relaxed Static Stability(RSS) has been applied to improve flight performance of modern version supersonic jet fighters. Flight control systems are necessary to stabilize an unstable aircraft and to provide adequate handling qualities. Also, flight control systems of modern aircraft employ many safety measure to cope with emergency situations such as a pilot unknown attitude flight conditions of an aircraft in night flight-testing. This situation is dangerous because the aircraft can lose if the pilot not take recognizance of situation. The system called the "Pilot Activated Recovery System" or PARS, provided a pilot initiated automatic maneuver capable of an aircraft recoveries in situations of unusual attitudes, speed and altitude. This paper addresses the concept of PARS with AARS(Automatic Attitude Recovery System), ATCS(Automatic Thrust Control System) and MARES(Minimum Altitude Recovery Estimation System), and this control law is designed by nonlinear control law design process based on model of supersonic jet trainer. And, this control law is verified by real-time pilot evaluation using an HQS(Handling Quality Simulator). The result of evaluation reveals that the these systems support recovery of an aircraft unusual attitude and speed, and improve a safety of an aircraft.
In this paper, the guidance law applicable to formation flight of UAV in three-dimensional space is proposed. The concept of miss distance, which is commonly used in the missile guidance laws, and Lyapunov stability theorem are effectively combined to obtain the guidance commands of the wingmen. The propose guidance law is easily integrated into the existing flight control system because the guidance commands are given in terms of velocity, flight path angle and heading angle to form the prescribed formation. In this guidance law, communication is required between the leader and the wingmen to achieve autonomous formation. The wingmen are only required the current position and velocity information of the leader vehicle. The performance of the proposed guidance law is evaluated using the complete nonlinear 6-DOF aircraft system. This system is integrated with nonlinear aerodynamic and engine characteristics, actuator servo limitations for control surfaces, various stability and control augmentation system, and autopilots. From the nonlinear simulation results, the new guidance law for formation flight shows that the vehicles involved in formation flight are perfectly formed the prescribed formation satisfying the several constraints such as final velocity, flight path angle, and heading angle.

In this study, we propose the terrain following algorithm using model predictive control and nonlinear disturbance observer-based backstepping sliding mode controller for an aircraft system. Terrain following is important for military missions because it helps the aircraft avoid detection by the enemy radar. The model predictive control is used to replace the generating trajectory and guidance with the flight path angle constraint. In addition, the aircraft is affected to the parameter uncertainty and unknown disturbance such as wind near the mountainous terrain. Therefore, we suggest the nonlinear disturbance-based backstepping sliding mode control method for the aircraft that has highly nonlinearity to enhance flight path angle tracking performance. Through the numerical simulation, the proposed method showed the better tracking performance than the traditional backstepping method. Furthermore, the proposed method presented the terrain following maneuver maintaining the desired altitude.
Recent researches on control theory enable nonlinear state feedback which is more closer to real system without approximation. To apply nonlinear control theories, all state variables should be measured or estimated. In this paper, a technique of designing nonlinear state observer for a particular class of nonlinear system is presented. The result is applied to an aircraft model to prove the convergency of observation error.

Recent developments for high altitude, long endurance conventional UAVs(HALE UAVs) have revealed new issues regarding aircraft structure design and analysis. First of all, due to intensive mission requirements, the structures of HALE UAVs have lightweight and very flexible main wing with high aspect ratio, and slender fuselage. For this kind of structures, aeroelastic characteristics are different from conventional aircrafts. Hence, currently developed analysis methods are not suitable to fully understand strucutral dynamics of the very flexible aircraft, and to guarantee structural reliability. Therefore, various structural studies considering nonlinear behaviors which are generally ignored for the conventional aircraft strucutral analyis have been attracting researchers interests. Nonlinear flutter of the very flexible wing is one of the subject to be studied in combination with strong coupling between aeroelastic characteristics and flight dynamics. Herein, as preliminary study, modeling and nonlinear system analysis of the 2D airfoild with torsional nonlinearity have been discussed.

To obtain aircraft dynamic parameters, various estimation methods such as Maximum Likelihood, Linear Regression are applied. In this paper we adopt the extended Kalman filter(EKF) to estimate the stability and control derivatives in aircraft dynamic models from flight test data. The extended Kalman filter is applied to nonlinear augmented system assuming that unknown parameters are additional states. In this work, the results of the extended Kalman filter are compared with the results of the wind tunnel test using Chang Gong-91 aircraft flight test data.
An analytical method is presented for evaluation of the steady state periodic behavior of nonlinear structural systems. This method is based on the substructure synthesis formulation and a harmonic balance procedure, which is applied to the analysis of nonlinear responses. A complex nonlinear system is divided into substructures, of which equations are approximately transformed to modal coordinates including nonlinear term under the reasonable procedure. Then, the equations are synthesized into the overall system and the nonlinear solution for the system is obtained. Based on the harmonic balance method, the proposed procedure reduces the size of large degrees-of-freedom problem in the solving nonlinear equations. Feasibility and advantages of the proposed method are illustrated using the study of the nonlinear rotating machine system as a large mechanical structure system. Results obtained are reported to be an efficient approach with respect to nonlinear response prediction when compared with other conventional methods.
A new control design methodology is presented here which is based on a nonlinear time-series reference model. It is indicated by highly nonlinear simulations that such designs successfully stabilize troublesome aircraft maneuvers undergoing large changes in angle of attack as well as large electric power transients due to line faults. In both applications, the nonlinear controller was significantly better than the corresponding linear adaptive controller. For the electric power network, a flexible a.c. transmission system (FACTS) with series capacitor power feedback control is studied. A bilinear auto-regressive moving average (BARMA) reference model is identified from system data and the feedback control manipulated according to a desired reference state. The control is optimized according to a predictive one-step quadratic performance index (J). A similar algorithm is derived for control of rapid changes in aircraft angle of attack over a normally unstable flight regime. In the latter case, however, a generalization of a bilinear time-series model reference includes quadratic and cubic terms in angle of attack. These applications are typical of the numerous plants for which nonlinear adaptive control has the potential to provide significant performance improvements. For aircraft control, significant maneuverability gains can provide safer transportation under large windshear disturbances as well as tactical advantages. For FACTS, there is the potential for significant increase in admissible electric power transmission over available transmission lines along with energy conservation. Electric power systems are inherently nonlinear for significant transient variations from synchronism such as may result for large fault disturbances. In such cases, traditional linear controllers may not stabilize the swing (in rotor angle) without inefficient energy wasting strategies to shed loads, etc. Fortunately, the advent of power electronics (e.g., high-speed thyristors) admits the possibility of adaptive control by means of FACTS. Line admittance manipulation seems to be an effective means to achieve stabilization and high efficiency for such FACTS. This results in parametric (or multiplicative) control of a highly nonlinear plant.
