Increase in Potential Low-value Magnetic Resonance Imaging Utilization Due to Out-of-pocket Payment Reduction Across Income Groups in Korea: An Experimental Vignette Study

  • Objectives: This study examined the effect of out-of-pocket (OOP) payment reduction on the potential utilization of low-value magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) across income groups. Methods: We conducted an experimental vignette survey using a proportional quota-based sample of individuals in Korea (n=1229). In two hypothetical vignettes, participants were asked whether they would be willing to use MRI if they had uncomplicated headache and non-specific low back pain, each before and after OOP payment reduction. To account for the possible role of physician inducement, half of the participants were initially presented with vignettes that included a physician recommendation for low-value care. The predicted probability, slope index of inequality (SII), and relative index of inequality (RII) were calculated using logistic regression. Results: Before OOP payment reduction, the lowest income quintile was least likely to use low-value MRI regardless of physician inducement (36.7-49.6% for low back pain; 30.5-39.3% for headache). After OOP payment reduction, almost all individuals in each income quintile were willing to use low-value MRI (89.8-98.0% for low back pain; 78.1-90.3% for headache). Absolute and relative inequalities concerning potential low-value MRI utilization decreased after OOP payments were reduced, even without physician inducement (SII: from 8.15 to 5.37%, RII: from 1.20 to 1.06 for low back pain; SII: from 6.99 to 0.83%, RII: from 1.20 to 1.01 for headache). Conclusions: OOP payment reduction for MRI has the potential to increase low-value care utilization among all income groups while decreasing inequality in low-value care utilization.

Cyber risk measurement via loss distribution approach and GARCH model

  • The growing trend of cyber risk has put forward the importance of cyber risk management. Cyber risk is defined as an accidental or intentional risk related to information and technology assets. Although cyber risk is a subset of operational risk, it is reported to be handled differently from operational risk due to its different features of the loss distribution. In this study, we aim to detect the characteristics of cyber loss and find a suitable model by measuring value at risk (VaR). We use the loss distribution approach (LDA) and the time series model to describe cyber losses of financial and non-financial business sectors, provided in SAS® OpRisk Global Data. Peaks over threshold (POT) method is also incorporated to improve the risk measurement. For the financial sector, the LDA and GARCH model with POT perform better than those without POT, respectively. The same result is obtained for the non-financial sector, although the differences are not significant. We also build a two-dimensional model reflecting the dependence structure between financial and non-financial sectors through a bivariate copula and check the model adequacy through VaR.

Changes of the phsico-Chemical Characteristics of oils treated by the ${\gamma}$-ray irradiation (I) -The Extracted soybean oil- (방사선 조사선량에 따른 유지의 이화학적 성질변화 (I))

  • To investigate the oxidative stabilities of the ${\gamma}$-ray irradiated soybean during storage and heating and some physico-chemical characteristics of soybean and the extracted soybean oil (SBO) with/without the ${\gamma}$-ray irradiation were determined. The ${\gamma}$-ray level use in irradiation for soybean were 2.5, 5.0 and 10.0 KGY respectively and Acid Value, Peroxide Value, Conjugated Diene Value, Composed Fatty Acids amounts, and Trans Fatty Acid occurrence were determined for all samples, which were incubated at 45$\pm$1$^{\circ}C$ for 25 days heated at 180$\pm$1$^{\circ}C$ for 30 hours. And these values of the ${\gamma}$-ray treated samples were compared to those of nontreated samples. The results were obtained as follows : 1. According to the increased level of the ${\gamma}$-ray irradiation, there was little difference in Dielectric Constant, Viscosity, and the Induction Period by Rancimat. But, in case of 5.0 KGY, oxidative stability was increased more twice than that of non-irradiation. In the quantity of fatty Acids composition of the extracted soybean oil irradiated with 10.0 KGY, palmitic, oleic and linoleic acids were less increased thanb those of non-irradiation, while stearic, linolenic acids were decreased. In the case of 2.5 KGY irradiation, stearic and oleic acids were increased. 2. The Acid Value of SBO according to the ${\gamma}$-ray irradiation level was almost not change, but was 0.1 lower than that of non-irradiation during incubation (45$\pm$1$^{\circ}C$). The Peroxide Value of SBO with the ${\gamma}$-ray irradiation, was very lower than that of non-irradiation, but its effect on oxidative stability was better of SBO treated with 5.0 KGY and 10.0 KGY. In the Fatty Acids composition of SBO, palmitic, stearic, oleic acids were increased, while linoleic, linolenic acids were decreased during incubation(45$\pm$1$^{\circ}C$). This tendency was more obvious due to the ${\gamma}$-ray level. While heating(180$\pm$1$^{\circ}C$), the Acid Value of SBO treated with the ${\gamma}$-ray irradiation was decreased, the Acid Value of SBO irradiated with 2.5 KGY was the lowest. Also the peroxide Values of SBO treated with 5.0 KGY, 10.0 KGY were very lower than that of non-irradiation. Conjugated Diene Value of SBO was almost unchanged according to the ${\gamma}$-level and heating time. 3. When the methyl linoleate was irradiated with the ${\gamma}$-ray, the Trans Fatty Acid was little produced. In case of SBO with non-irradiation, the trans C18:1 was occured about 6.5~7.9%, but trans C18:2 and C18:3 were not shown, while SBO irradiated with the ${\gamma}$-ray 2.5, 5.0, 10.0 KGY, trans C18:3 and C18:2 amount in SBO were increased according to heating time, but trans C18:3 was little occured. As these results, the effects of the ${\gamma}$-ray irradiation to oil containing food were to cut down the energy for food storage and to increase oxdative stability during storge. And also it was shown to be the best that 10.0 KGY of the ${\gamma}$-ray irradiation would be applied to soybean.

  • This paper studies approximate solutions for a class of nonlinear diffusion population models. Our methods are to use the fundamental solution of heat equations to construct integral forms of the models and the well-known Banach compression map theorem to prove the existence of positive solutions of integral equations. Non-steady-state local approximate solutions for suitable harvest functions are obtained by utilizing the approximation theorem of multivariate continuous functions.

  • All indices that are now in use assume normally distributed data, and any use of the indices on non-normal data results in inaccurate capability measurements. Therefore, $C_{s}$ is proposed which extends the most useful index to date, the Pearn-Kotz-Johnson $C_{pmk}$, by not only taking into account that the process mean may not lie midway between the specification limits and incorporating a penalty when the mean deviates from its target, but also incorporating a penalty for skewness. Therefore we propose, a new process capability index $C_{psk}$( WV) applying the weighted variance control charting method for non-normally distributed. The main idea of the weighted variance method(WVM) is to divide a skewed or asymmetric distribution into two normal distribution from its mean to create two new distributions which have the same mean but different standard distributions. In this paper we propose an example, a distribution generated from the Johnson family of distributions, to demonstrate how the weighted variance-based process capability indices perform in comparison with another two non-normal methods, namely the Clements and the Wright methods. This example shows that the weighted valiance-based indices are more consistent than the other two methods In terms of sensitivity to departure to the process mean/median from the target value for non-normal process.s.s.s.

  • This study proposed a research model that can explain the usage intentions of users and non-users by considering the performance aspects of personal mobility and external environmental factors based on the SOR (Stimulus-Organism-Response) model, A survey was conducted targeting domestic users and non-users, and research models and hypotheses were verified through Partial Least Square (PLS) and Artificial Neural Network (ANN). As a result of the analysis, it was confirmed that the users' perceived satisfaction and perceived trust had a positive effect on their intention to use, and that perceived risk and environmental value had a significant relationship with perceived satisfaction and perceived trust. For non-users, it was found that there was a positive correlation between perceived satisfaction and intention to use, and it was verified that perceived risk and environmental value, like users, were significant antecedents of perceived satisfaction and perceived trust. Among the remaining variables, the perceived mobility of users and the perceived ease of use of non-users were respectively presented as important influencing factors on perceived satisfaction.

Economic and Non-economic Determinants of Environmental Sustainability in the Long Run: Evidence from G20 Economies

  • Purpose - This paper analyzes the economic and non-economic factors that contribute to environmental sustainability by reducing CO2 emissions, based on G20 panel data. Design/methodology - We conduct a comparative analysis of advanced and developing economies during 1995-2016. To examine the impact, an environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) model was employed, incorporating additional explanatory variables such as internet use, renewable energy, and services trade. Findings - The empirical findings show the existence of an inverted U-shaped EKC phenomenon between GDP per capita and CO2 emissions in G20 economies, with the turning point at a per capita GDP level of US$ 38,340. Moreover, an inverted U-shape relation exists between internet use and CO2 emissions, with the turning point at a 44% internet use rate. The comparative analysis show that the inverted U-shape curve only exits in advanced economies, with turning points of US$ 42,356 per capita GDP and 27% internet use rate, respectively. Renewable energy and services trade have a greater negative impact on CO2 emissions in advanced economies than in developing economies. Originality/value - Renewable energy and services trade have a greater negative impact on CO2 emissions in advanced economies than in developing economies. Overall, the results suggest the role of internet use, renewable energy and services trade in sustainable development in G20 countries.

Word Sense Similarity Clustering Based on Vector Space Model and HAL (벡터 공간 모델과 HAL에 기초한 단어 의미 유사성 군집)

  • In this paper, we cluster similar word senses applying vector space model and HAL (Hyperspace Analog to Language). HAL measures corelation among words through a certain size of context (Lund and Burgess 1996). The similarity measurement between a word pair is cosine similarity based on the vector space model, which reduces distortion of space between high frequency words and low frequency words (Salton et al. 1975, Widdows 2004). We use PCA (Principal Component Analysis) and SVD (Singular Value Decomposition) to reduce a large amount of dimensions caused by similarity matrix. For sense similarity clustering, we adopt supervised and non-supervised learning methods. For non-supervised method, we use clustering. For supervised method, we use SVM (Support Vector Machine), Naive Bayes Classifier, and Maximum Entropy Method.

Corporate Non-reflux Income and Firm Value : A Review of Taxable Income Resources (미환류소득과 기업가치: 과세소득 재원의 고찰)

  • The purpose of this study is to find out ways to enhance corporate value by using more efficient use of non-reflux Income which is commonly considered in existing corporate income tax refund and newly introduced investment and mutual aid promotion tax. Specifically, we analyzed the effect of income tax return income and income tax return on wages and fixed - asset investments, which are commonly considered in the two tax systems, on firm value. As a result of the analysis, it was confirmed that short-term internal reserves and income reflux activities had a negative impact on firm value, and long-term internal reserves and income reflux return had positive effects on firm value. It is recommended not to formulate uniform criteria such as the ratio of income refund activity to the contents of tax, but to apply the tax refund to the internal taxation system and the taxable income source.

The Impact of Firms' Environmental, Social, and Governancial Factors for Sustainability on Their Stock Returns and Values (지속가능경영을 위한 기업의 환경적, 사회적, 지배구조적 요인이 주가수익률 및 기업 가치에 미치는 영향)

  • This study empirically examines the impact of firms' environmental (E), social (S), and governancial (G) factors on their short-term and long-term values. To measure firms' non-financial performance, we use ESG performance grades published by KCGS (Korea Corporate Governance Service). We employ stock log return as the proxy of each firm's short-term value, and Tobin's Q ratio as that of its long-term value. From a series of regression analyses, we find each of the ESG factors generally has a negative impact on stock return while it has a positive impact on the Tobin's Q ratio. These results imply that firms' effort for enhancing their non-financial performance may adversely affect their financial performance in a short term; but in the long-term point of view, firms' values increase through their good images engraved by their respective social, environmental and governancial efforts. In addition, we compare the relative strength of impact among E, S, G, the three non-financial factors on the firms' value measured in Tobin's Q ratio, and find that S (social factor) and G (governancial factor) give statistically significant impact on the firms' value respectively. This result tells us it would be advised to strategically embed CSV (creating shared value) pursuing both of profits and social responsibility in the firms' future agenda. While E (environmental factor) is shown to be an insignificant factor for the firms' value, it should be emphasized as a major concern by all the stakeholders in order to form a sound business ecosystem.
