Purpose The purpose of this study is to investigate the nature of temporal non-use, namely, the type of temporal non-use and the dynamic relationships between temporary non-use and use by expanding the model of dynamic state transition of non-use which is proposed by the previous study. Design/methodology/approach This study adopted grounded theory methodology as a research methodology. Fifteen university students were interviewed for open coding and for selected coding which leads the research model ten students were interviewed. Findings Based on the coding, the types of use were divided into interactive use and one-way use, and the types of temporal use were classified into temporal non-use in which use is intended and temporal non-use in which use is not intended. The dynamic transition model is presented for each type of use and temporalnon-use, and an integrated model that combines them is presented. This study found the following four things: First, all non-use can be temporal Second, there are different types of temporal non-use. Third, the pattern of use is not just one, but new patterns will continue to emerge. Fourth, we found a change in the function of SNS.
Purpose The purpose of this study is to identify the determinants of non-use and the dynamic nature of non-use by the qualitative research methodology, grounded theory methodology, as part of identifying the nature of non-use. Design/methodology/approach We applied the grounded theory methodology to a total of 23 college students, including non-users who are not currently using them, users with low intention to use them, and users with high intention to use. We extracted the codes related to the use and proposed the non-use dynamics conversion process based on the coding results. Findings First, the use of information technology can also promote the frequency of use, but can also lead to the use of negative attitudes which would fall in the state of non-use. Second, the user may have both positive and negative attitudes toward the current information technology. Third, if usage is dominated by habits, it is not so easy to change persistent use into an unused state. Fourth, factors that determine the use of specific information technology can be a factor in determining nonuse. This study has contributed to understand the essence of non - use as well as the nature of use, overcoming limitations of quantitative research approach and confirming possibility of grounded theory method in information system research.

The purpose of this study is to develop a Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), to determine differences in gender perceptions in adopting non-cash transactions. In this study, the authors provide a measurement of differences in gender perceptions in adopting cashless, which refers to perceived usefulness, perceived ease-of-use, and perceived security. Respondents in this study were students from the millennial generation who are very familiar with the use of technology, especially non-cash transactions. The data collection technique used in this study was a survey, by distributing questionnaires to 260 respondents. The data were processed statistically through Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). The results of this study indicate that for men, ease-of-use of transactions does not increase the use of non-cash transactions. Meanwhile, for women, perceived ease-of-use has a significant and positive effect on the use of non-cash transactions. Furthermore, perceptions of usability and security have a positive and significant impact on using non-cash transactions. It was also found that female students had a positive, but not significant, effect on the use of non-cash transactions. This means that there has been a difference in the perception of gender, between men and women, in responding to the use of non-cash transactions.
While information technology(IT) users' behaviors has been considered one of the most important research topics and studied in very many ways, 'non-use' has not been focused as a research topic. However, understanding non-use provides new insights for analyzing and understanding the essential nature of IT uses with wider frames and more qualitative dimension. The objective of this study is to provide some guidelines for studying non-use. For this purpose, the previous studies for non-use were reviewed focusing on resistance, suggested potential research issues and some research methodologies based on grounded theory.

This study aims to develop measures to turn former users and non-users of public libraries back into users by understanding the differences between the user, former user and non-user groups in terms of their perceptions to public libraries, as well as the differences between these groups in their perceptions regarding the factors to non-use of public libraries. A literature review and statistical analysis of the results from a questionnaire survey were conducted to identify the differences. The results from the statistical analysis showed significant differences between the user, former user and non-user groups in terms of their perceptions to public libraries and the non-use factors. From the results, we could categorize the factors into common non-use factors, non-use-only factors, and use interrupt factors, and we develop suggestions to improve the factors in order to move non-users and former users to frequent users of the public libraries.

The main objective of this study was determine why employees conduct non-work related smartphone use at work. To do this, this study developed the research model of non-work related smartphone use behavior consisting of factors such as habit, intention, social effect, task interdependence, and behavior. And it was tested via a survey of employees using smartphones. The results of this study reveal, first, that habit and social influence are significant predictors of non-work related smartphone use behavior. Secondly, task interdependence has a positive moderating effect between intention and behavior in non-work related smartphone use.
The purpose of this study was to examine the factors affecting innovation resistance and intention of use of social TV non-users focused on innovation diffusion theory and innovation resistance model. The results were as follows: First, compatibility among perceived innovation characteristics by social TV non-users influenced negatively on innovation resistance, and complexity among perceived innovation characteristics by social TV non-users influenced positively on innovation resistance. Second, perceived risk by social TV non-users influenced positively on innovation resistance. Third, compatibility among perceived innovation characteristics by social TV non-users influenced positively on social TV intention to use. And complexity among perceived innovation characteristics by social TV non-users influenced negatively on social TV intention to use. Fourth, perceived risk by social TV non-users influenced not significantly on social TV intention to use. Fifth, innovation resistance by social TV non-users influenced negatively on social TV intention to use.
The contingent valuation method (CVM) is one of the most commonly used and effective methods to evaluate non-use value of resources. Reasonable application of CVM to value the cultural heritage is the key process of evaluation. CVM was used to evaluate the non-use value of cultural heritage of Taishan Mountain combined with questionnaire survey and field research in this study. The results indicated that the importance of the degree of the three components of non-use value was heritage value ranked highest (40.22%) > followed by existence value (38.58%) >then option value (21.20%). In addition, the rate of willingness to pay was 54.52%, the average and median values of per person were 40.17 CNY·a-1 and 20.00 CNY·a-1 and the non-use values of Taishan Mountain cultural heritage was 33 million CNY·a-1. The median value of WTP was consistent with Asian countries but was lower than European and American countries. Factors influencing WTP showed that monthly income and satisfaction with Taishan Mountain were correlated to WTP, and family location and willingness to revist were correlated remarkably with WTP. In addition, monthly income was correlated remarkably with WTP value, however other factors were not. The results showed the importance and necessity of protective development of Taishan Mountain cultural heritage, which would be used as an important reference for decision makers.
Purpose: Growing evidence indicates that adolescents from multicultural families are more vulnerable to drug use than those from non-multicultural families. This study aimed to compare the factors associated with the habitual drug use among adolescents from multicultural and non-multicultural families. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional design was employed. Data were obtained from the 14~15th (2018~2019) Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey. Overall, 91,443 multicultural (n=1,725) and non-multicultural adolescents (n=89,718) were included. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, univariate analysis, and logistic regression analysis. Results: The multicultural adolescents engaged in more habitual drug use than did non-multicultural adolescents. In both groups, those who currently drank, experienced violent victimization, had sexual experiences, and did not live with their family were at greater risk of engaging in habitual drug use. The odds ratios of these factors were higher in multicultural adolescents than in non-multicultural adolescents. In non-multicultural adolescents, those who were boys, had experienced depression and suicidal ideation, perceived their body image as normal, overweight, or obese, and had poor subjective health status were at greater risk of engaging in habitual drug use. Conclusion: These results highlight the need to develop customized strategies for adolescents from both multicultural and non-multicultural families to reduce and prevent their habitual drug use.
This paper considers option and non-use values of rail services. The total economic value of a given transport service can be classified into use, option and non-use values, other grouping rules can be applied though. The use value is the consumer's surplus from the actual rides of a specific mode. The option value, on the other hand, can be defined as a traveler's willingness to pay for reserving a travel mode, which is not his or her main choice, as a standby alternative. Finally, the non-use value represents benefits that are not attributable to the actual use or option use, but to the vicarious, altruistic, functional and existing worth of a transport service. A stated preference survey based on a double-bounded dichotomous choice is conducted. A survival model is applied to the data collected. Calculations of trip makers' willingness to pay for option and non-use values are based on the parameters of the estimated survival model. Some suggestions for transport appraisal are also presented.
