  • Industrial-scale pulse corona process to remove $SO_2$ and $NO_x$ simultaneously from combustion flue gas has been studied. The pilot plant built in the present study treats 2,000 $Nm^3$/hr of flue gas from a boiler. The geometry of the pulse corona reactor is similar to that of an electrostatic precipitator commonly used in industry, A thyratron switch and magnetic pulse compressors, which can generate up to 130 kV of peak pulse voltage and up to 30 kW of average pulse power, have been used to produce pulsed corona. The removal efficiencies of $S0_2$ and $NO_x$ with the present process are maximum of 95 % and 85 %, respectively. Electrical power consumption to produce the pulsed corona, which has been one of the major difficulties to apply this process to industry, has been evaluated in the present study. The results showed that the power consumption can be reduced significantly by simultaneous addition of hydrocarbon injection and heterogeneous phase reactions to the process.

An investigation into the thermo-elasto-hydrodynamic effect of notched mechanical seals

  • A 3D thermo-elasto-hydrodynamic model is developed to analyze the sealing performance of a notched mechanical seal applied in the reactor coolant pump. In the model, the generalized Reynolds equation, the energy equation coupled with notch heat balance equation, the heat conduction equations, and the deformation equations of the sealing rings are iteratively solved by the finite element method. The film pressure and temperature distribution are obtained, and the deformation of the sealing rings is revealed to study the mechanism of the notched mechanical seals. A parameterized study is conducted to analyze the sealing performance under different operating conditions. As a comparison, the sealing performance of non-notched seals is also studied. The results show that the hydrostatic effect is dominant in the load-carrying capacity of the fluid film due to the radial mechanical and thermal deformations. The notch can cool the fluid film and influence the thermal deformation of seal rings. The sealing performance is sensitive to the pressure difference, ambient temperature, and rotational speed. It is suggested to set the notches on the softer sealing rings to acquire the greater hydrodynamic effect. Compared with the non-notched, the notched end face holds a better lubrication performance, especially under lower rotational speed.

전극형 가습기의 특성을 개선하기 위한 실험적인 연구 (An Experimental Study to Improve the Characteristics of Electrode Type Humidifier)

  • This investigation was performed to study the characteristics of electricity and heat transfer that occur in the cylinder of electrode type humidifier during the process of water evaporation. Measurements were made to obtain the amount of water evaporation, the consumption of electric power, electrical conductivity, etc according to the materials and shapes of electrode. When the humidifier was in non-drain controlled mode, the number and amplitude of current cycle per minute increased gradually with the lapse of time, whereas for drain controlled mode, it decreased about 40[%] after draining water. It was found that for non-drain controlled mode, the thermal efficiency of humidifier which used SS400, STS316 and wire net electrode type was about 95~96[%] and it was 2~4[%] higher than that of drain controlled mode. Also, it was shown that the thermal efficiency of humidifier which used neighboring six-phase electrode balanced electrically was 4[%] higher than that of existing six-phase type.

  • The main objective of this study is to understand the regeneration step of the PTSA(Pressure and thermal swing adsorption) process below the atmospheric pressure by rigorous dynamic simulation. This target process is to recover toluene using activated carbon as an adsorbent. To do this, the dynamic simulations for the regeneration step are performed at 360, 490, 590mmHg and at high temperature after the simulation of the adsorption step at latm and 298K. A mathematical model was developed to simulate the column dynamics of the adsorption systems. This model is based on non-equilibrium, non-isothermal and non-adiabatic conditions, and axial dispersion and heat conduction are also considered. Heat transfer resistances are considered in gas-solid, gas-column wall and column wall-outside air. The LDF(Linear Driving Force) approximation model describes the mass transfer rate between the gas and solid phase. This study shows that the recovery of toluene by PTSA is more preferable than that by general TSA.

Pyrolysis Properties of Lignins Extracted from Different Biorefinery Processes

  • The non-isothermal and isothermal pyrolysis properties of H lignin and P lignin extracted from different biorefinery processes (such as supercritical water hydrolysis and fast pyrolysis) were studied using thermogravimetry analysis (TGA) and pyrolyzer-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS). The lignins were characterized by ultimate/proximate analysis, FT-IR and GPC. Based on the thermogravimetry (TG) and derivative thermogravimetry (DTG) curves, the thermal decomposition stages were obtained and the pyrolysis products were analyzed at each thermal decomposition stage of non-isothermal pyrolysis. The isothermal pyrolysis of lignins was also carried out at 400, 500, and $600^{\circ}C$ to investigate the pyrolysis product distribution at each temperature. In non-isothermal pyrolysis, P lignin recovered from a fast pyrolysis process started to decompose and produced pyrolysis products at a lower temperature than H lignin recovered from a supercritical water hydrolysis process. In isothermal pyrolysis, guaiacyl and syringyl type were the major pyrolysis products at every temperature, while the amounts of p-hydroxyphenyl type and aromatic hydrocarbons increased with the pyrolysis temperature.

  • Molecular dynamics study of thermal NIL (Nano Imprint Lithography) process is performed to examine stamp-resist interactions. A layered structure consists of Ni stamp, poly-(methylmethacrylate) thin film resist and Si substrate was constructed for isothermal ensemble simulations. Imposing confined periodicity to the layered unit-cell, sequential movement of stamp followed by NVT simulation was implemented in accordance with the real NIL process. Both vdW and electrostatic potentials were considered in all non-bond interactions and resultant interaction energy between stamp and PMMA resist was monitored during stamping and releasing procedures. As a result, the stamp-resist interaction energy shows repulsive and adhesive characteristics in indentation and release respectively and irregular atomic concentration near the patterned layer were observed. Also, the spring back and rearrangement of PMMA molecules were analyzed in releasing process.

Behaviors and Process Analyses of Spark Sintering for Powders Having a Low Sinterability

  • The sintering behaviors and process parameters of some compounds (carbides, oxides, sulfides, borides) were investigated experimentally. These compounds were successfully consolidated and showed high densities. Some unique phenomena such as retardation of grain growth, suppression of thermal decomposition and maintenance of initial non-equilibrium phases, were observed by the proper control of process in spark sintering.

  • Among the non-traditional machining methods, Abrasive waterjet machining process shows big promise in drilling difficult-to-machine materials due to its numerous advantages such as absence of heat affect zone and thermal distortion. Acoustic emission signal technique is used to understand about material removal mechanisms during abrasive waterjet drilling process. More information about the drilling process is derived through frequency decomposition of auto regressive moving average modeling representing acoustic emission signals.

  • This study discusses a non-contact optical technique (electronic speckle pattern interferometry) that is well suited for thermal deformation measurement without any surface preparation and compensating process. Fiber reinforced plastics ($[0]_{16},\;[0/90]_{8S}$) were analyzed by ESPI to determine their thermal expansion coefficients. The thermal expansion coefficient of the transverse direction of a uniaxial composite is evaluated as $48.78{\times}10^{-6}(1/^{\circ}C)$. Also, the thermal expansion coefficient of the cross-ply laminate $[0/90]_{8S}$ is numerically estimated as $3.23{\times}10^{-6}(1/^{\circ}C)$ that is compared with that measured by ESPI.

커튼월 유리의 열파손에 관한 실험적 연구 (An Experimental Study on Thermal Breakage in Curtain Wall Glazing)

  • In recent years, the use of glass applied to curtain wall as a building facade material has increased in our nation. However, the non-tempered curved double glass is very easy to broke because it is difficult to guarantee the quality in process of making it into double glazing. So, it is more vulnerable to thermal breakage than tempered double glass. In this paper, surface temperature difference on curved double glazing was compared to that of heat strengthened glass and flat glass by conducting thermal breakage experiments. As a result, flat single glass was broken at temperature difference of 100~140 degrees but curved double glazing was broken at that of 40~60 degrees. Therefore, it was concluded that curved double glazing is more vulnerable than flat double glazing to thermal breakage, and it should be considered the possibility of thermal breakage when curtain wall glazing is applied as a building facade material.
