Research on optimization of traffic flow control at intersections (교차로 교통 흐름 제어 최적화에 관한 연구)

  • At present, there are few studies on signal control of pedestrian traffic flow and non-motor traffic flow at intersections. Research on the optimization scheme of mixed traffic flow signal control can coordinate and control the overall traffic flow of pedestrians, non-motor vehicles and motor vehicles, which is of great significance to improve the congestion at intersections. For the traffic optimization of intersections, this paper starts from two aspects: channelization optimization and phase design, and reduces the number of conflict points at intersections from spatial and temporal right-of-way allocation respectively. Taking the classical signal timing method as the theoretical basis, and aiming at ensuring the safety and time benefit of traffic travelers, a channelization optimization and signal control scheme of the intersection is proposed. The channelization and phase design methods of intersections with motor vehicles, non-motor vehicles and pedestrians as objects are discussed, and measures to improve the channelization optimization of intersections are proposed. A multi-objective optimization model of intersection signal control was established, and the model was solved based on NSGA-II algorithm.

Effect of All-Red Clearance Interval on Intersection Right-Angle Crashes (전적색신호가 교차로 직각충돌사고에 미치는 영향)

  • An All-red clearance interval(AR) has been operating with amber signal in order to avoid collision between vehicles which cannot come out of the intersections, vehicles coming in from the opposite direction, and pedestrians(bicycles) on the crosswalk during the signal conversion time at the intersections. Foreign nations have been analyzing AR's influences of traffic accidents. On the other hand, the similar research has not been conducted in the country. The objective of this paper, therefore, is to analyze the safety at the intersections with respect to the installation of AR through the hypothesis test. A before-and-after analysis has been performed for 10 intersections where applied AR. From the 95% of significance level, the results of Non-parametric Test show that the installation of AR improves a safety at the intersections. The results indicates that AR discharges vehicles passing through the intersections and control entering vehicles at the intersections.

A Causational Study for Urban 4-legged Signalized Intersections using Structural Equation Method (구조방정식을 이용한 도시부 4지 신호교차로의 사고원인 분석)

  • PURPOSES : Traffic accidents at intersections have been increased annually so that it is required to examine the causations to reduce the accidents. However, the current existing accident models were developed mainly with non-linear regression models such as Poisson methods. These non-linear regression methods lack to reveal complicated causations for traffic accidents, though they are right choices to study randomness and non-linearity of accidents. Therefore, to reveal the complicated causations of traffic accidents, this study used structural equation methods(SEM). METHODS : SEM used in this study is a statistical technique for estimating causal relations using a combination of statistical data and qualitative causal assumptions. SEM allow exploratory modeling, meaning they are suited to theory development. The method is tested against the obtained measurement data to determine how well the model fits the data. Among the strengths of SEM is the ability to construct latent variables: variables which are not measured directly, but are estimated in the model from several measured variables. This allows the modeler to explicitly capture the unreliability of measurement in the model, which allows the structural relations between latent variables to be accurately estimated. RESULTS : The study results showed that causal factors could be grouped into 3. Factor 1 includes traffic variables, and Factor 2 contains turning traffic variables. Factor 3 consists of other road element variables such as speed limits or signal cycles. CONCLUSIONS : Non-linear regression models can be used to develop accident predictions models. However, they lack to estimate causal factors, because they select only few significant variables to raise the accuracy of the model performance. Compared to the regressions, SEM has merits to estimate causal factors affecting accidents, because it allows the structural relations between latent variables. Therefore, this study used SEM to estimate causal factors affecting accident at urban signalized intersections.

도시지역 고정식 신호체계의 효율적 운영 ( The Efficient Operations of the Pretimed Signal System ( PSS ) in Urban Area )

  • Today transportation problems are severer with the increase of the vehicles and travel demand in urban areas, but could not be completely solved with only the expansion of the new transportation facilities. Because the expansion of the new transportation facilities are limited in urban areas. As one of the Transportation System Management(TSM) techniques in this study, the simulation results of the existing signal systems which were operated based upon the peak time periods for increasing the efficiency on the pretimed signalized intersections(PSI) during the different time periods : the AM on-Peak, the AM off-Peak, the PM off-Peak, and the PM on-Peak, were as follows : i) There was no distinct difference in the total traffic volumes concentrated on the signalized intersections during the different time periods, but a considerably big difference in the directional traffic volumes for those time periods. ii) There were about 53% reduction of the average delay and 51% reduction of the fuel consumption when applying the different signal systems to the different time periods regardless of the CBD and Non-CBD. iii) There were about 36% increase of the average delay and 33% increase of the fuel consumption when applying the same signal systems during the peak time periods to the different time periods regardless of the CBD and Non-CBD. Based on the above results, it was concluded that constructing the different signal systems for the different time periods would be better than construction the same ones for those periods on the pretimed signalized intersections in urban areas.

A Study of Roundabout Operation According to the Pedestrian Volume (보행량에 따른 도시부 회전교차로 운영에 관한 연구)

  • Roundabouts, which belong to traffic circles, are intersections which are similar to the existing rotary form. Roundabouts recently have been constructed all around the world. And interests in roundabouts are increasing in Korea. However, there are lacks of research on pedestrian volume which has a great influence on operation efficiency of roundabouts in urban area. Therefore, this study suggests efficiency analysis and pedestrian signals in roundabouts according to the pedestrian volume. First, VISSIM simulation was organized to analyse volume of one lane roundabouts in urban area. Second, average delay of intersections was calibrated by VISSIM simulation dividing signalized intersections and non-signalized intersections depending on pedestrian volume. Finally, this study showed that roundabouts are suitable when pedestrian volume was under 200person/hr and traffic circles with a pelican signal are suitable when pedestrian volume was over 200person/hr. And when pedestrian volume and traffic volume are over 600person/hr and 1,500vph respectively, fixed signalized intersections fit well.

  • PURPOSES : In this study, analyze the characteristics of IOC indicator 'threshold' which is needed when evaluating the traffic signal operation status with ESPRESSO in various grade road traffic environment of Seoul metropolitan city and derive suggested value to use in field practice. METHODS : Using the computerized database program (Postgresql), we extracted data with regional characteristics (Arterial, Collector road) and temporal characteristics (peak hour, non-peak hour). Analysis of variance and Duncan's validation were performed using statistical analysis program (SPSS) to confirm whether the extracted data contains statistical significance. RESULTS : The analysis period of the main and secondary arterial roads was confirmed to be suitable from 14 days to 60 days. For the arterial, it is suggested to use 20 km/h as the critical speed for PM peak hour and weekly non peak hour. It is suggested to use 25 km/h as the critical speed for AM peak hour and night non peak hour. As for the collector road, it is suggested to use 20 km/h as the critical speed for PM peak hour and weekly non peak hour. It is suggested to use 30 km/h as the critical speed for AM peak hour and night non peak hour. CONCLUSIONS : It is meaningful from a methodological point of view that it is possible to make a reasonable comparative analysis on the signal intersection pre-post analysis when the signal operation DB is renewed by breaking the existing traffic signal operation evaluation method.

An Importance-Performance Analysis(IPA) for Bus Users Travel Time by Using Structural Equation Model(SEM) (구조방정식모형(SEM)을 활용한 버스 이용자의 통행시간 중요도-만족도 분석(IPA))

  • In most public transportation related master plans, decisions for investment priorities are initially made by facilities with lower installation rates or lower satisfaction (performance) levels. In general, the decisions are made without conducting importance factor analysis. In this study, a combined method of importance-performance analysis (IPA) model for bus users related in travel time is proposed by using Structural Equation Model (SEM). The results of the IPA for Metropolitan users show that the categories need improvement are number of bus stops, number of intersections, headways, waiting times for boarding and traffic signal operations in order. On the other hand, Non-Metropolitan uses show that the categories need improvement are traffic signal operations, waiting times for boarding, headways, bus exclusive lanes and number of intersections that is in reverse order to Metropolitan users.

Characteristics and Models of the Side-swipe Accident in the Case of Cheongju 4-legged Signalized Intersections (4지 신호교차로의 측면접촉사고 특성 및 사고모형 - 청주시를 사례로 -)

  • This study deals with the side-swipe accidents of 4-legged signalized intersections in Cheongju. The objectives are to analyze the characteristics of the accidents and to develop the related models. In pursuing the above, this study gives particular emphasis to finding the appropriate methodology to modelling. The main results are as follows. First, injuries were analyzed to be twice than property-only accidents in the side-swipe accidents. The accidents were evaluated to occur more in inside-intersection. Also, the accidents were analyzed to be almost the auto-related accidents and to be occurred by the unsafely-driving activity. Second, multiple linear regression models were evaluated to be more statistically significant than multiple non-linear. The most fitted models were analyzed to be the models with the number of accidents as the dependent variable. The factors of side-swipe accidents analyzed in this study were ADT, area of intersection, right-turn-only-lane, number of pedestrian crossings, limited speed of main road, maximum grade and number of signal phase.

Preliminary Study on Actuated Signal Control at Rural Area of Cheon-an City (천안시 외곽지역의 감응식 신호운영을 위한 기초연구)

  • Recently in Korea, in the case of metropolis, the urban signalized intersections are controlled by traffic information center or ITS center. Cheon-an City also established traffic information center through the 1st.-$\sim$3rd. ITS public construction and has managed this center that includes bus information service, traffic information collection and providing service, parking information service, and traffic responsive control system. In the Cheon-an metropolitan traffic signal operation, traffic signal controllers were grouped by the each main traffic flow axes and performed with coordinated signal timing for the signalized arterials, and also cycle and split changed by realtime traffic demands. Cheon-an urban traffic responsive control system was evaluated by intersection delay and speed, then it was verified that the delay decreased and vehicle speed improved. However, the rural signal control system to connect adjacency town was evaluated to have lower status than urban area due to the unimproved TOD (Time of day) plan. Therefore actuated signal control was examined for substitutive control system in isolated signal intersection. The aim of this article is to compare actuated signal control with TOD mode in the rural intersection of Cheon-an and to fine superiority of these two control mode, with evaluation of vehicle delay by using HCM(2000) method and by micro-simulation CORSlM. The result of field test show that actuated signal control gave better performance in delay comparison than the existing TOD signal control. And simulation outcome verified that non-optimized TOD has higher delay than optimized TOD mode, non-optimal actuated mode, and optimal actuated signal control mode. Particularly, these three modes delays had not different values according to the paired sample t-test. This is because small traffic demands were loaded in each links. This suggested actuated signal control is expected to be more effective than TOD mode in some rural isolated intersections which frequently need to survey for traffic volume.

Applicability Evaluation of FMCW Radar Detector on Signal Intersections (FMCW 레이더 검지기 신호교차로 적용성 평가)

  • Intrusive Vehicle Detectors have excellent detection performance compared to other types of detector, but disadvantages of high installation and maintenance costs, short life time due to greater damage to roads and paving materials. In contrast, Non-Intrusive Vehicle Detectors attached to the stationary pole have advantages because it does not damage the road surface and easy and less expensive to maintain. Despite these advantages, Non-Intrusive type detectors are still not been widely used in traffic signal control systems because of the low detection performance. In this study, a FMCW(Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave) radar Vehicle Detector was designed as an alternative detector for the signalized intersection, and the performance evaluation was presented by purpose applicability.
